[Archived] Blackburn Sign Chilean Superstar Carlos Villanueva

Sorry hes too small and too SLOW to be able to adjust he'll stay until the end of the season then go back to Chile next summer.

For Ince to sign Carlos would be managerial suicide.

At this moment in time and on the evidence presented this season I have to agree. A different manager though with different ideas may just change Carlos' English Adventure into a success. Allerdyce for example has had several different foreign stars and made them into premiership players although he has had some failures as well.

I agree with Philip, we have no idea how good the kid is because he's in and out of the team each week.

Personally, I think he has huge potential. Unfortunately, as has also been mentioned, he is something of a luxury that we cannot afford in a relegation scrap. We certainly cannot risk spending £4m on him when we might have to sack the manager and when there is a good chance that we will be relegated. I'd try to extend his loan to the end of the season and worry about things then.

Right now, it is strikingly obvious that we need somebody to link our isolated strikers to the midfield, especially if Andrews and Mokoena are playing in the centre. Bench McCarthy and play Vilanueva in the hole.

I think the problem with regard to signing Carlos is the size of the fee. Watching him in the reserves last night we commented on how his performance was not one of a player worth that amount of money. He certainly didn't look any better than many of the younger players on the pitch.

However, in fairness, a very cold night at Morecambe and playing in front of 200 people must be a strange environment for Carlos.

In many ways he reminds me of Maceo Rigters - a player with potential but whose game does not seem suited to the Premiership. There is no doubting that Carlos has skill but our game requires a more physical approach and at the moment he hasn't got that. Given time he may develop that aspect of his game but at the moment £5 million seems a huge amount of money to pay for potential. Hopefully, the club could come to an arrangement to pay the fee over a period and based on first team appearances.

Maybe he is trying too hard but i have seen nothing recently that makes him better than a League One player. He cannot control the ball, falls over, is slow, gets his feet tangled together, runs straight into players, gives stupid free kicks away...do you want me to carry on?

However, this could all be down to being played out of position. I think WE all know his best position would be behind (in the hole) RSC and Benni, but PI does not want to play him there, why?

On current form i would no way sign him. Andrews has done more and he cost £800k, so no way is Carlos worth £5m and around 80% of our transfer kitty.

I don't think Carlos is in any way an Allardyce type of player. Carlos's best chance is for Ince to stay.

You say that but - Djorkaeff, Okocha, Nakata...

I've said it before but Carlos just needs a run in the team. It's easy to forget, but he's actually younger than Paul Gallagher.

It would be a terrible thing if he was let go without getting a full opportunity to prove himself.

If he was as good as Okacha and Djorkaeff, we wouldn't be having this debate. He clearly isn't as good as either of those two. - don't you think?

Plus, he is nowhere near as quick and not as strong as those two players either.

I think his lack of pace is the biggest hindrance. He is lightweight too which doesnt help in offsetting it.

For me, I believe he needs time, just as greats such as Pires and Drogba needed, turning from useless to superstar within 12 months of moving here. I would like to stay at least to the end of the season but WOULDNT pay 4 million right now to secure his signature. Its too early to risk that.

Den, have a look at your original post and the issue was whether or not Carlos Villanueva is an "Allardyce-type player", which he clearly is based on how effectively he used the two players mentioned above. Whether Villanueva himself is good enough is another question entirely. He has not been impressive so far, but personally I don't think he has had the proper opportunity (i.e. had enough match time in his preferred position) to shine. Regardless, he is still young, has plenty of room for improvement, and there is no reason to suggest he doesn't have a reasonable chance of shining under Allardyce's management, or under a manager of similar or better calibre for that matter. All the more reason to remove Ince and find a proper manager who can maximise the players' quality (all the players, not just one of them) and get the club out of this relegation-threatening mess.

So Jay Jay Okocha was?

Yeah, what's so difficult with that? Jay Jay was top quality and strong and pacy to boot.

I don't remember Sam employing players that were easily knocked off the ball and slow.

JAL by my calculation, if we followed your advice, Rovers would line up with just the two floodlights either side of the Riverside.

Have you made a positive comment about any player?

:D

Standards Philipl standards thats what its all about were do we want to be giving the quality we are up against. Villaneuva fanatastic against Grimsby non existant against Chelsea, Rovers side seriously lack pace and with Carlos lacking pace signing this lad is a no brainer we simply just cant afford to make this one.

Bret Emmerton has been an excellent player for Rovers has the strength and determination required with ability unfortunately hes never had the players around him to tune into him (Grella could be one though) hes been slated by many a Rovers fan during his time here but not by me philipl.

Cruz and Bentley along with Brad were fanatastic players, for me this is the standard all the others have to aspire to otherwise the standard goes down and the team isnt worth watching.

While I'm sure Villa has some talent in his boots I am not convinced on his head. At present he cannot either make a quick correct decision nor perceive the pattern of play around him, I don't think its lack of pace in his feet thats the real problem.

Fortunately they are both things that can be developed through coaching, unfortunately thats one area where we now fall down.

It's nothing putting on a some muscle can't help. The weight training under Hughes certainly helped Bentley.

Also, I don't remember Bolton being full of speedsters under Allardyce? It shouldn't matter anyway since faster decision-making can help counter-act a lack of pace, as Majiball has explained, and it is definitely something coaching can help with.

I agree with the earlier poster who said he could take time to adapt. It's strange, but players rarely fit straight into a team first season. If they do, like Benni season before last and Cruz this season, they seem to suffer second season syndrome. Hopefully Carlos is the former. I think he has talent, he just needs to hit some form and see what the boundaries are in the Premier League and how early he needs to make decisions. Drogba was donkey in his first season, Ronaldo was average. It's a risk. But I'd take it.

It always amuses me when people try to compare someone not very good, to someone exactly the opposite.

Carlos, Drogba and Ronaldo

Take a risk, if the squad was stronger could possibly have leant towards your viewpoint but with the squad being as frail and weak as it is, risks are not what Rovers can afford to undertake just now.

Muscle mass increases through speed training we don't want him getting slower. Aggression, though maybe the problem with Carlos a bit like it was with Forlan.

Pace can be coached nowadays SAQ international are one such company along with Parisi in the states, with a proven record of making sports men quicker.

Carlos has an eye for a pass and a shot as well, if he's constantly put in situations in training where he has to percieve, think and act quickly, and provided those situations are game related he will improve.

I'm not too sure either JAL. We could save the 2-3m and spend it on an older, defensive battler, but I just have this feeling in a year or two, we will be thinking it was a good deal. It's up to Ince whether we take the risk or not.

Oh Anti-Dingle-Brigade, I got into a spat with fellow supporters at the start of the season about not needing a defensive midfielder even though Carlos isnt defence minded for me Rovers are seriously lacking the cutting edge to their game to which Carlos is here to fill that viod. He isnt doing it, hes been here long enough now to be making his mark as regular in the first team which he isnt which says it all for the lad.

Its the attacking midfield options that Rovers desperately desperately need not defence minded players we need to able to put the opposition on the back foot more often during games this then takes pressure off the back four and thus will increase our probabilities of winning football games once more.

ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK !!! Thats a more attractive proposition and the direction Paul Ince should be focusing on !

It will only be a good deal if we can improve the boy. The only way he will improve is if he is placed in a conclusive environment to do so. At present I think we should not take up the option, we have him for the whole year anyway, patience is called for.

We shouldn't be considering any transfers at present, Ince has to resolve our situation with what he's got, first. If we carry on as we are Ince will not be here to welcome them its pointless at the moment. All focus should be on the pitch, he should be clocking up his coaching hours for his badges and getting the team straight at the same time.
