67splitscreen Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Seems Carlos is in demand if we don't sign him. Could all well be a bluff of course. Carlos

DanLad Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 He wants to stay? A can't see any reason why he would want to stay unless we are playing him more money than he'd get otherwise. He's hardly playing and it's clear that Big Sam doesn't rate him.
Guest Vinjay606 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 How much would be cost anyway? Isn't it 5 million or something like that to make it permanant? No way BFS will pay that for Carlos.

Shabani Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I think i remember lee saying we have to give him a bit more because his wages are something like £350 a week in chile, so he needs a bit more to live here
Hughesy Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 It seems only fair when the likes of Gallagher isnt even playing for us, yet we still contribute around £10k per week to his wages!! It will be interesting to see if we try to do anything with Villanueva in the summer or whether we simply let him go home.

Reading back it was around $8.6m at the time that was around £4.2m, I guess now it will be nearer 5.8m with exchange rates being what they are. Can't see a fixed $ to £ rate being agreed but you never know.
donis1410 Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Personally I would like to see Carlos play more, when he came on against Liverpool he seemed to calm our game down a bit. I just think he needs time to adjust. He has promise and I am disapointed that he hasn't been given more of a chance!!!
Amo Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Sam has probably made his mind up about Carlos, but it would be nice for him to feature before the end of the season. It's possible, provided we ensure our safety. Sam also said he wanted to test some youngsters (e.g. Doran) once we were home and dry.

Yes and it does seem that in the last month or so he has given carlos that chance and I hope he keeps getting these chances, I think the problem is that Sam doesn't know where he wants to put him!!!

Billy Castell Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I'd like to see Doran and one or two others make an appearance, as well as Carlos when we are safe. A lot of times under Hughes, he stuck with the same faces, and even Zurab never got much of a look in. OK, a few seasons we were pushing for a European place, but when we weren't he never tried out Peter or whoever.
Drummer Boy Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 I think Villanueva is exactly the kind of player we should have available to us - he plays the game properly, has great skill and technique and has a game that can adapt to the more physical demands of the Prem. In my mind, the decision on what to do with him at the end of the season will tell me a great deal about how Sam wants to develop the team and how he wants to play the game. If he wants to make the best use of the talents available to him then we are in for a more attractive time next season as players come back from injury and we make room for players like Carlos as well as more workmanlike players. On the other hand, if he wants to play to a formula where players are brought in who can fit the formula rather than for their flair or technical brilliance then there will be no room for players like Carlos and plenty of room for well-meaning workmanlike players with "good engines". Don't much fancy the latter and may well review my current go-to-every-match position as the prospect of watching variations of the recent Everton match every week is deeply unattractive to me.
Amo Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Big Sam had Jay-Jay Okocha in his eleven, who was pretty much a luxury player for Bolton. I would hope he could mould Villanueva into a similar role for Rovers next season. Can't see it happening, though, especially with out limited funds.
thenodrog Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I'd never imagine that SA would ever want to pay money for Villanueva. I doubt we'll see him again after May.
Hughesy Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 I dont think there is much chance either - especially at £5m.
thenodrog Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 At 5m there is no chance. 10% of 5m and appropriate salary requirements might just see a change of heart.
The Prof. Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I suspect he will probably have made enough money here to survive in Chile already. He'll get picked up but it's a shame as he's looked the more likely of the 'youngsters.' I just don't think you get the time in this league and Gally AND Rigters have paid the price for that (although Gally has had chances). You just can't have these type of players on your books if you feel you need to stick a centre half up front when you've no strikers.
Backroom Tom Posted May 2, 2009 Backroom Posted May 2, 2009 As many have said if the fee was £5m then we have already paid a large pat of that in loan fee and wages I beleive. I may be wrong though. I often am.
philipl Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 40% has been paid I believe. And the currency was quite possibly Euros which are now roughly the same as £ but weren't whn the deal was done.
Backroom Tom Posted May 2, 2009 Backroom Posted May 2, 2009 In that case I think he's worth a punt. He can offer something different and would still bring a fee later on. Although I'm pretty sure he wont be staying.
1864roverite Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Carlos is not the type of player to fit into out style of playing football. I certainly think he is a gifted player but can he really cut it in our league ? On what I have seen so far, he struggles to cope with the pace. His little legs just cannot cope with bigger and stronger players. There is no doubting his talents but can Rovers benefit from them ? I dont think so and therefore the money is best spent elsewhere.
Backroom Tom Posted May 2, 2009 Backroom Posted May 2, 2009 You have a point 1864, when he sprints he looks like he's running up hill into a gale
Amo Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Can I bring J-J Okocha to everyone's attention again? He was nearing 30 when Sam plucked him from obscurity. He has the same height and stature as Carlos, and his lack of pace was compensated by technical merit. That's how he became an integral part of Bolton's success. If you consider Carlos has those same positives, and is in his early 20s (profit margin), I think he would be worth a second look next season when Sam has established the side.
Eddie Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Obscurity? PSG had spent an absolute fortune bringing him to Paris and he already played for two large(ish) European sides.
