Tris Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Anyway, getting back to Carlos. I think he would be best advised to find another club. He's never going to hold down a regular first team spot at Ewood because there isn't a position available for him. 4-4-2 is the way everyone plays nowadays and Carlos simply will never be suited to that. Totally disagree. Rovers won't often have a sniff of a player like Villanueva, someone with a bit of something different who can spark a chance from nothing or change a game through pure unexpected skill. We've already paid for half of him, so should certainly pay the balance - he wants to stay. It's up to the manager to fit him in and build a team to play to his strengths - less of the percentage and more of the productive. Derbyshire is the same - just fit him in. A decent manager would recognise what these players can bring to the party - both are needed in our squad for next season.

T4E Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Rovers won't often have a sniff of a player like Villanueva, someone with a bit of something different who can spark a chance from nothing or change a game through pure unexpected skill. This should be remembered. Carlos isn't your typical Premier League player and doesn't fit into one particular box like we tend to want in this country. He is however very very talented and young. We wont get many more opportinuties at players of his type.
Hughesy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I think we should try to re-negotiate a new loan deal for Carlos. Im sure if we kept him another 12 months then we would see a big difference in the player and would then be happy to pay the fee to sign him. As others have said - hes improving, he's got alot stronger and isnt afraid of the rough side of the premier league either.
thenodrog Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Totally disagree. Rovers won't often have a sniff of a player like Villanueva, someone with a bit of something different who can spark a chance from nothing or change a game through pure unexpected skill. I like watching Villanueva but he's hardly sparked any chances from nothing or changed a game has he? We've got EHD for Derbyshire too so thats that. btw am I correct in understanding that we've paid nothing yet for EHD and that the sum is due in the summer? If so thats clipped a bit off our budget already.
Hughesy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Thats normal - clubs very rarely pay for players straight away - our problem this summer is making sure we get £15m+ for RSC and as much as possible to be paid straight away.

tcj_jones Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I'd be interested to know the payment structure of the Vilanueva deal. If it is true that we have already paid half the £5m or so fee, then I'd be tempted to sign him. He might be lacking in power and pace, but he clearly has skill in abundance and can create something out of nothing. Albeit against inferior opposition, his early cup performances were very encouraging. He has a cracking left foot! Derbyshire, on the other hand, I don't feel is good enough for the Premier League. He's had numerous chances under different managers and has never quite cut it. He seems to have found his level in the Greek league. In any case, by bringing in Diouf, I reckon Sam has signalled the end of his Rovers career. Out of interest, what's the situation with Gallagher? Have we finally sold him? He showed early promise, but that was about four seasons ago now. We have to get him off our books.
Hughesy Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 That would be abnormal then? Yes - but if someone like City come looking, they are loaded so we must try to get as much as possible our of their pockets now. As for Gally - he has talent, he is just lazy and abit of a prima donna if you ask me. Even the Plymouth fans have said he is lazy and not putting in the effort. Same happened when he went to Stoke on Loan. They had the option to buy him but didnt take it up, as didnt preston.
donis1410 Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 SIGN CARLOS!!!!!!!! (or at least sign him on loan for another year) I don't know what it is about this player but everytime I see him play he gets me excited there is something about him when he has the ball, just look at the way our game improved against Liverpool. Also why would there have been all these press releases about Carlos and how much he wants to stay at rovers and stating his determination to prove himself????
Billy Castell Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I'd like to see him here longer, just to see if he can adapt and be our version of Jay Jay Okocha. It sounds like he really wants to stay, which makes a nice change.
Amo Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I wonder if Sam will be tempted to throw him into the last two games, now we're practically safe?
dj54nna Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 If we nick a point against Chelsea, which after today's result seems unlikely, I'd like to think a few players (Carlos, Zurab, Doran) would get a fair run out against West Brom. Probably won't happen though.
Amo Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I'm not expecting anything from the Chelsea game, so we might as well start him for the last two matches.
dr_awol Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I'm not expecting anything from the Chelsea game, so we might as well start him for the last two matches. whos place should he take tugay, benni or targetman samba's? dont see where he can fit esp on the last day when tugay will be given ~90mins. i would prob put samba back in defence and play carlos just behind benni.
RibbleValleyRover Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Villanueva Happy at Rovers- But unsure of future. <snip> "I want to stay as I feel as though I am learning every day," he explained. "It is very different in England from Chile. The game is quicker and stronger. It takes time to adjust and I feel I would improve next season." "When I arrived in Blackburn I got chickenpox and could not train for three weeks. Now things are better. "This is one of the best leagues in the world and I am enjoying being part of it." "While I would like to be involved in more games, it is okay. I am happy at Blackburn." </snip> ==== I'd like to see him stay another season, could we extend the loan? I guess it all comes down finances, i can't see Sam having much to spend this summer so Carlos may be on his way.
gumboots Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 As much as I find him an exciting player, Carlos will always be a 'problem'. For him to be fully effective I think you have to adapt the formation to suit him, i.e. his only position appears to be as a supporting striker. I'm no tactical genius but I don't think Sam, or any manager for that matter, would want to spend £5m on a player who forces you to alter your tactics, probably to the detriment of results. But no matter what I think, I still like him and a big part of me wants to keep him at Rovers. He has some sort of X factor. I think you are l all still looking at the youtube excitement. I've seen little to warrant the excitement he seems to generate otherwise. I can't believe we'd think of paying the kind of fee we're hearing when we haven't given him even a brief run in the team when we are so desperate for creativity and strikers. Expect allardyce to be looking for some kind of creative player but not this one.
Cocker Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I am sure I remember reading when we first signed him that they wouldn't accept anything less than 5m for him. If this is the case then thats why we must wave good bye. With 5m we would hope to get two players never mind one and lets face it none of us here know from this season if he is worth 1m do we. He is a crowd favourite and I have no idea why. Don't get me wrong its really not his fault because he hasn't been given the chances to show what he can do but we are in no position to take the risk. I accept that the 5m price tag may be something I dreamt about.

I still think he's got quality to make it in the Premiership but as mentioned before, an extended loan seems like the only thing worthwhile to me to, not a chance of anyone paying anywhere near 5 million for him.
Backroom Tom Posted May 17, 2009 Backroom Posted May 17, 2009 Shame he's looked like he can offer us something different today, I'd like us to give him a go.
den Posted May 17, 2009 Author Posted May 17, 2009 Shame he's looked like he can offer us something different today, I'd like us to give him a go. Simply not enough about his game for this league, I'm afraid.
The1mattjansen Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 How bizarre that he gets his first decent run out only after we're assured that he wont be staying.
den Posted May 17, 2009 Author Posted May 17, 2009 How bizarre that he gets his first decent run out only after we're assured that he wont be staying. 11 starts before today, according to this.
Tim Southampton Rover Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Has he officially signed for the new club yet? I thought he had to wait until the transfer window opens and after his contract with us ends. Maybe playing in today's game suggests that Big Sam wants one final look at him in a competitive game before deciding whether to give Carlos a chance to stay.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 The same Setanta that said Castillo had signed for us last summer? I'll wait, I think.
