Mr. E Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 just seen the goals, can't believe people are saying "he couldn't have done anything about them". While mostly they weren't his fault, this is exactly where the deciding line between the good and the rest lies - the good can go beyond the call of duty and produce great saves and keep those out, the rest will simply have to concede it is beyond their limites. He's not the worst keeper - but in no way is he a top 6 keeper either. Like most of the rest of the squad, he is simply an inadequate replacement to the quality we were used to having.

Eddie Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I thought Robinson had a good game. He could probably have done better with the Agger goal, but it wasn't a terrible mistake and he made some good saves. Certainly none of the blame for the result should be placed on him and maybe the fans should be looking more at the tactics, midfield and back four that allowed a team to get off 20+ shots at goal.
tcj_jones Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Robbo is a superb shot stopper and, 90% of the time, performs brilliantly. However, his inadequacies are clear to see: he doesn't deal particularly well with long distance shots and lobs and he often comes for balls into the box that he really shouldn't or fluffs his punch. Aerial ability is a fundamental part of a keeper's games, and his weakness in this department will mean that he will never become completely reliable. I wouldn't want to get rid of Robbo after just one season at a club though, especially when he's performed extremely well for the vast majority.
Hughesy Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 The only goal Robbo should of maybe done better on was Aggers goal, but to be fair even that was moving in the air. The first & last goal were Nelsens fault. The 2nd was a foul. It will be interesting to see if we sign that keeper from Spain in the summer, because if hes as good as some on here say then he could put some pressure on Robbo.
Earlydoors Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Showing signs of improvement to me. Starting to look (a bit) trimmer and sharper. He was never going to be better than Brad this season but should be over the next four. He could yet be the difference between us going down or not.
JC4LAB Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 ...In fairness to Robbo just feel that shot blocking should come mostly bodies in the way or by being put off by someone with nuisance value. The blame for goals is being laid on him as last man standing...there was nb attempt from anyone to block or even put off Aggers .In the good old days .Wilcox or Rippers would have probably had him.and got booked in the process....
RevidgeBlue Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 The criticism of Robinson gets ever more bizarre and ridiculous. He played well and saved us from something approaching double figures on Saturday, yet still gets criticised by certain people. It's plain that for some his main crime is to have been signed by that 'orrible Cockney geezer Ince and not Saints Mark or Sam. I think he's a very good keeper and given the relative strength in other areas of the team we're lucky to have him. Complaining about only having him in goal is akin to complaining about not having Gerrard in midfield or Messi up front!.

In fact I would have imagined that looking for a new keeper was the least of our worries when assessing the squad as a whole.
modes98 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Robinson got our top rating in every paper and deserved it. He made a couple of cracking saves and couldn't do anything about any of the goals. 2 were just world class strikes and the other 2 were poor defending.

If that is true then I see absolutely no reason why our defenders should not be fired on the spot and give the chance to the youngsters. Since it can't get any worse.
Backroom DE. Posted April 15, 2009 Backroom Posted April 15, 2009 I suppose the same rings true for Real Madrid, Man Utd and Chelsea's defenders too, then, as they've all managed to also concede 4 against Liverpool?
Iceman Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Ive kinda had enough of this attacking of Robbo. What a keeper to replace ie Friedel yet for all the brilliant saves Friedel made there were moments of shockers from him. You dont get into an England team if you dont have ability. Forget the fact that the English national team havent set the world alight, imo Robbo must have done something right to get selected. Ill repeat myself one last time, keepers become better keepers with age. Give the guy a break, again he is one of the Rovers and lets support him. I think we as supporters have been spoilt by Friedel and to be honest Robbo joined a team in disarray, while being low on confidence and form.
riverside returns Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I agree with Ice, get off Robbo's back, he is one of the top English keepers and has got better as the season has progressed. He will be much better when playing in a confident team next season.
Backroom Tom Posted April 26, 2009 Backroom Posted April 26, 2009 As a long term Robbo supporter I'm glad my beliefs were vindicated today. Absolutely outstanding, no other word for his performance today.
philipl Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Absolutely sensational saves. The one onto the crossbar in the first half was extraordinary as Givet got a boot onto Valencia's drive deflecting what was probably a low drive across Robinson into a blast that was going in under the bar over his head at the near side. The double save in the second half was just stunning as well.
Backroom DE. Posted April 26, 2009 Backroom Posted April 26, 2009 Robbo won the game for us today. His most important performance for us by a mile, and it was superb to see the comaraderie between him and our other players.
Bobby G Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Robinson is one of the best when it comes to reflexes, and one might say his positioning is good too as alot of the balls drop to where he is standing. He has definitely improved as the season has gotten on. But still has a bit to go before he is back to a good level consistently.
gbax Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 The best goalkeeping performance I've seen at Ewood this season and last! If he can carry that on and with his age we could have a good goalie for a few seasons to come. Friedel was the best Ewood goalie, but had not been that good for sometime! He looked absolutely thrilled! And his reaction on the big screen when the 2nd goal went in!
tony gale's mic Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Brilliant performance today, his best performance by some distance for us and the first time that I feel he's actually won us points. Still has a fair way to go though, it was only last week where he made a bad error against Stoke, but this is a huge step in the right direction.
Fylde Coast Fan Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 You can debate his quality at length and I'm sure he's cost us a fair few points this season, but I think he saved us £30 million today. Hopefully this is the game he needs to get his confidence back and start the road to being the international class keeper he used to be.

Not taking anything away from the quality of his performance as it was superb, and I agree with the rest of your post, but had he not made those saves and we got a point I think we'd still be odds on to stay up.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Had Robinson not made those saves, I think we would be looking at a point (or less if Andrews hadn't saved the clean sheet near the end with a double clearance).
Iceman Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 All Robbo needs is for you and me to support him, make him feel wanted and he will deliver the performances we know he is capable of. Ive been one who stood by him through all the criticism, and ill say it again he is still a youngster in goalkeeping. He will get better and better, and we will be lucky to have him here for many years to come. His made mistakes, but today he made up for those mistakes and it might just have saved us from relegation. We not out of it, but todays result has gone a long way in securing our top flight status.

Superb match today and credit for it but he needs to make sort of display the norm rather than the exception.
