broadsword Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 I think I'm right in saying he's the third most expensive player in our squad right now. (I'm willing to be corrected.) He's eaten up a considerable portion of our transfer budget but "he'll do for now". Sounds like a cop-out to me. In any case, his brilliant close-range stops cancel out his lack of command of his box and he probably isn't going anywhere soon, so I might as well get used to it. As for whether he should go to South Africa, I'd have kittens if he came on as sub in a quarter final. International class, he ain't. Having said that, third-choice 'keepers rarely play, so I guess it doesn't matter so much. however, I'd still take James, Hart and Green instead.

But Green has hardly been on form this season. I'd take James and Robbo as the experienced keepers (doesn't Robbo have 40 caps or something? And he saved a penalty taken by a German!) with Hart there too. Although it would be James, Hart, Robbo in that order for me. While Robbo has the experience, I just think Hart is a better keeper all round.
tcj_jones Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 I don't get the hype surrounding Hart. I swear everybody loves him because he's young and we haven't had a good keeper come through in a long time. What I find truly astounding though is that our own fans, who have watched Robinson regularly over the last two seasons, consider GREEN a better keeper. It amazes me. Kirkland, Robinson and Foster should all be ahead of Green and Hart in the pecking order IMO.
Majiball Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Robbo has one decent match and suddenly he's god's gift to goalkeeping... No-ones saying that. But some have been proven to be against him from the outset.
philipl Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 There is no way Green is a better keeper than Robo. Hart is much improved recently though.
Majiball Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Hart maybe much improved but playing at Birmingham out of the spolight is no comparision to pulling on the three lions. James Green and Robbo for me for SA, Hart must bide his time. If he had done better at City last year under the spolight I'd have taken him.

Exactly the same argument used against the likes of Bentley and Warnock when they were here. You've got to give guys who are on form the chance. Hart should play against Egypt at least as he's done better this season then James, Green and Robbo domestically.
broadsword Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 Maybe I was re-arranging the chairs on the Titanic, and the greater point is that English goal-keeping is weak. I see more of Robinson than I do of Green. But I don't think I've seen anyone argue a case for Robinson being first-choice for England?

Have him in the squad fine, but its the one position on the pitch where experience really counts. He's a good keeper and in the future if he keeps progressing will become most likely a future England number one.

Majiball Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Well a certain one of the mentioned keepers lives where I hail from. He was spotted in the local night club with some mates of mine and asked who should be number one. He put forward two names: Robinson & Hart, Hart was his choice and he described Robbo as "not good enough" unfortunatly he finsihed it with I've never liked him since "something". He doesn't expect to go himself, but is hoping. You've got to laugh because if he's "not good enough" why did he want him on the plane? Just out of curiousity would anyone consider Alumina???
tony gale's mic Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Definitely not Almunia, he's worse than any of the English keepers challenging for the slot.
JAL Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 If there one player at Rovers with everything to prove till the rest of the season its Paul Robinson. Some big performances from Robbo now especially against the big four teams should thrust him into the England headlights. For the first time this season against Bolton, I, thought Paul Robinson put in a 100% faultless performance. But why should it take until now, way past mid season, for him to reach this level. As has been pointed out he didnt face any dangerous crosses and long range shots which will all be coming in the remainding games so fingers crossed he can maintain this level of performance so that it jetisons Rovers up the league and puts him back on the Internationl stage. Can it happen or was Bolton a one off ?
tcj_jones Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Robinson has had several better performances than that against Bolton this season and has been playing at this level for some time. He deserves praise, but not on the back of this performance alone. Bolton certainly wasn't a one off.

Amo Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Robinson proving today why he has so many critics. He's an above-average shot-stopper, but you're always expecting another boob from him.
Bobby G Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Average at best. Not above average. In the PL, Id place him firmly within the bottom half of the table. And I wont change my tune if he pulls off a wonder save in the next game unlike some people here whose opinions change faster than anything.

tony gale's mic Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Another game, another mistake. Robbo is back to business as usual...
jim mk2 Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Another game, another mistake. Robbo is back to business as usual... I would not blame the Torres goal on Robinson. Both the defence and the midfield were caught napping and should have cut out the danger. Robisnon's "business as usual" is to play very well. We're lucky to have him.

Robisnon's "business as usual" is to play very well. We're lucky to have him. It doesn't matter what should have been done before and who else was to blame, Robbo's position was pretty shocking. As usual. Lucky to have him? Usually plays very well? The amount of games in which he's conceded goals he couldve done much better on is really quite high. Sometimes they haven't really affected the result as theyve been in the midst of away spankings so havent been noticed as much. Yes he can make a few good saves - big deal watch a few League Two games and you'll see their keepers pull off good saves too. Not saying he's League Two standard but he's at very best bottom half PL standard. Fabio Capello knows his stuff...
Majiball Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 Even after he made his mistake that goal was preventable. The covering defenders should have marked Torres and gotten ball side to stop the pass. It was a collection of errors, not one single player is solely responsible. You'll notice Robinson wasn't even mentioned on match of the day, the focus was elsewhere.

David James has made a career out of astonishing howlers yet is still England's No 1 at the age of 38 (?). Capello obviously does know his stuff. Goalkeepers mature later than outfield players and at around 30 Robinson is three or four years from his peak. To say he is "at very best bottom half PL standard" is nonsense.
