Couple of Mackem 'mates' seem to rate Simpson when he was on loan there, though Evans was by far the better of the two, he is a centre back though.

Would expect him to be a backup to Ooijer?

Why no official Villanueva confirmation though?

Newcastle still intent on signing Warnock from what I here, Coloccini set to sign soon, and then attention will turn to Warnock deal

Best game ever.

Amo, Stead and Johnny Douglas. It's a wonder that team didn't achieve more.

And it was the day you met me.

I do remember Steady getting a couple other important goals down the stretch that season, including one to draw with United.

Not the greatest Rover, but one of my favorites.

Oh, and van Der Sar gifted us that match.

Stead´s goal against United was for a win not a draw...it was that game at Ewood which meant we would definitely be staying up.

Think we then went on to lose the last the couple of games to end a thoroughly miserable season.

Given to him by Ince...................

(Joke, before nicko has another thrombo)

Excellent scoop on the Simpson situation. Strange move as nicko said.

A very strange move as we have Northern Ireland Under-21 international Tony Kane, a specialist right-back, in reserve and Eddie Nolan, a Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, who played for the reserves at right-back in a number of games last season. Simpson must be signing to play right-back for the first team as we surely don't need another reserve right-back. With Reid, Ooijer and Emerton all able to fill in if necessary, it will be interesting to see if Ince will now sign a more experienced right-back.

Apologies if I've missed this, but has Eric Steele actually left for United?

Haven't noticed any confirmation of that on the official site or anywhere else.

Steele was still with us on Wednesday because he was working with the 'keepers at Northwich.

Simpson is a very highly rated youngster at United, having seen him play for United vs Wigan last year, I must say I was impressed.

He has good pace and crossing ability, I would rather sign an up and coming youngster than a past it player!

No more to tell you on Simpson - apart from the fact that Fergie pulled him yesterday to tell him he was going to Blackburn. Thats about as official as it gets.

He is a tidy player, but I'm just surprised that Rovers scouted right backs far and wide and ended up getting one on the doorstep this way.

Anyway, transfer chases often work out like that.

Leeds once tried to buy Denis Irwin and Man U ended up getting Cantona instead...

Interesting. My best guess is the money "saved" will be used on a right winger and possibly a defensive midfielder.

Nicko will there be a view to purchase on this deal or is it just a one year loan? I see Nicko has answered this part already...

I cant see United letting him go to play back up as they would rather he played back up to Brown and Neville and train with them than back up to Ooijer or Emerton or whoever. Having slept on it last night, I think he may be pushed into the deep end...

Odd, Odd - this isn't odd it's bonkers - not bothered about the R/B - he won't play anyway.

No Compo for removal of one of our staff - thats odd - did we not have him signed to a contract!

So shouldn't we be getting cash to add to our fighting fund? are are we now taking a tip of the Manure piles gaffer down the road and doffing our caps and touching our forelocks for him now. That's it - I'm on the phone to find out what's going on here. We've got mates of mates playing, mates of sworn enemies playing and now we're thanking mortal enemies for taking our newly appointed staff and giving their players some work experience to boot.

Ince has to STOP this now - he is treating us as a tuppeny club.

ODD it's b£$%@@y ridiculous.

what do you mean by this nicko?

cheers

Martin O'Neill is painfully slow in the transfer market. Simple as that.

Do you think Ince has found at that R/B isnt the biggest priority after all?

No, Ince has wanted a specialist right back since he arrived.

Simpson may be the answer. OK, it's come out of the blue - a bit. But that happens. Osorio was not playing for Stuttgart when they went to watch him, maybe they are not sure on Ochs. Possibly they will end up signing TWO...right now it is a very changing scene.

As for the fine print of the deal, I am told it is a loan with a possibility of a buy - as for lenghts of the loan, no idea. I would presume the full season.

This might actually be another shrewd move by Ince? Do you know what value this chap has and was Roy Keane interested in buying him after Simpson spent the 2007 season at Sunderland?

Actually its probably that he is looking more at the right side of midfield now that Bentley has left. I am sure between Simpson, and Emerton we can have a decent right defensive side but its more vital to have a replacement for Bentley and possibly a good central midfielder.

maybe its a loan move with a view to a transfer..what have we to lose on getting a young man utd player on loan?? nothing..if he does well-we try buy him, if he doesnt we dont buy him...

hes looked pretty good when i seen him-especially the attacking side of his game..

people really need to stop being all doom and gloom..

I agree I have heard very good things about this right back and he has looked impressive when I have seen him play. From what I read in the Mirror this morning the loan deal includes 2.5mil permenant deal if he impresses

I am hoping that JW's last comment on our top target of a defensive midfielder is spot on.. but I can't for the life of me think of one top draw defensive midfielder out there who would be available.

Have you heard anything on who they would be looking at for those last few positions (RW/Def Mid/Att Mid) yet Nicko?

Prof mate chill.. I heard that simpson is a good player.. since when do you get huge compensation for a goalkeeping coach anyway.. at least Ince seems to of got the best from this deal... especially with so many people rating the young lad.

Given we have lost a good rw.. and dont really have a good defensive mid, saving the cash for these positions to me is a very sound move!!
