RibbleValleyRover Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5gM...x_FYeHpH_8vI4wQ Time short in Robson's cancer battle 6 hours ago Former England manager Sir Bobby Robson has admitted he will lose his battle with lung cancer "sooner rather than later". Robson has been battling a fifth bout of the illness and has accepted doctors' prognosis that he is unlikely to beat it. Speaking to The Sun, he said: "I have accepted what they have told me and I am determined to make the most of what time I have left. I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go some time, and I have enjoyed every minute." He added: "I have been fortunate to survive this long. It is thanks to the doctors and their dedication." Sir Bobby, who took England to the brink of a World Cup final in Italy in 1990, has enjoyed a football career spanning six decades - from playing days with Fulham and England, to managerial triumphs first with Ipswich and then as national coach at two World Cups, to continental coaching appointments. He later returned to his native north-east to take over at Newcastle and most recently spent a short time as consultant for the Republic of Ireland. ===== Sad news about an absolute legend of the game.

2PAC 4 Blackburn Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Great shame, he's done a lot of things in his long carear in football.
brian_gallagher85 Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Sad sad news. Whatever time he has left I hope he enjoys it and that he doesn't suffer. One of the true greats in football and a real gent to boot
Grabbi Graeme Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Very sad, a true great who has given everything to football, has been at some of the top clubs in europe and he was at Newcastle as well. I was in Italy in 1990 and watched the penalty shoot out in a hotel surrounded by germans, so close and I belive that if we had got to the final we would have won it, probly the closest we will get for a while. Hope he doesn't suffer in his remaining time.
broadsword Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Good grief, 4 times it's come back and had another go at him. Once is bad enough. Poor old Bobby, a very likeable guy. He has my respect, and I feel very sad for him.
Claytons Left Boot Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 A real gentleman - it will be a sad day indeed when he passes away.
Torgeir Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Read that in the sun dismorning crying shame. You thought after beating it five times he could have enjoyed the rest of his life. Cancer is never truly beaten. Sad news about a proper footballing man - hope he gets to enjoy his final months/weeks/days.
T4E Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Unfortunately this has been coming for some time. Sir Bobby has been around for a ridiculous amount of time, he must surely be the longest serving British football personality by a distance. He's seen and done just about everything this game has to offer. He's had a great innings. All the best Bobby.
den Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Cancer is never truly beaten. Sometimes it is. Sometimes people think it's cleared, when in fact it isn't. A very brave man to face up to it in this way.
roversmum Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Very sad about this. Thoughts and prayers to Sir Bobby and his family. A very brave man.
DeadlyDirk Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 That is sad news, Bobby won't go down without a fight and I wish him and his family all the best. When his time does come it will be a sad day. He has been a great servant too football.
Rover down South Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Very sad news. A fantastic man. Will always be remembered for Italia 90. I was a young lad then & it is my first memories of football.
67splitscreen Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Words fail me. Have a good one, for as long as it maybe.
Ronin Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Very sad news, and can only repeat what everybody else has said. A great servant of the game and ambassador. Best wishes to him and his family
Fife Rover Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 This really is very sad news to me; I had no idea he had even got cancer. Sir Bobby is truly one of footballs' all-time greats, and a true gentleman throughout. He has earned the universal love and respect from all that follow football and there are very few people in the game either now or past that can claim that. I hope he can be allowed to see out his remaining time in peace, and with the love of his family and friends.
Bobby G Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 An air of sadness has taken over me. True gentleman who loved football everytime he opened his mouth... God help him...
CrazyIvan Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 It will truly be a sad day when he passes away. There aren't many loyal and trustworthy footballing gentlemen left but he is the archetype.
robborover Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Very sad news, he's not only a good manager, but he's honest and to the point. All the best to his family. Top man in my opinion.
brfc_jonesy Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Very very sad news, champion guy. I shall drink this pint of hobgoblin in celebration of a fantastic life and career!
blue phil Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 It will truly be a sad day when he passes away. It surely will . So why don't we wait for that day until we dish out the tributes - this is all a bit morbid .
Baggio Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 He was the guest of honour at our game with PSV last night having managed both teams previously, some truly great memories from his time with us. He handed over £500,000 from his cancer charity yesterday too. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7545643.stm

You could have the bloody decency to bother to spell the word "great" right in a tribute to him.
