den Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Really? You think the quality of player available last Saturday was so poor that no manager could have got them to win? Tactics have a minor part to play in any team Eddie. We've had two managers this season with allegedly different tactics. Very little has changed in terms of performance. The best teams have the best players - not necessarily the best tactics.

They clearly could not cope with Ince's pointless passing or the much simpler but spirit crushing hoofball under Allardyce. You pay peanuts you gets monkeys.

I don't think either were on peanuts deryck.
rover6 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Quite right. The move started from Andrews terrible pass but there other errors after that. Firstly, I'm not saying this is an error but it happened, the cross is probably the only header Nelsen missed all afternoon. Second Samba should have been moving diagonally behind Nelsen to fill the gap created by Nelsen moving to head the ball. Instead of being in the six yard box towards the near post the goal was scored at Samba was outside the six yard box nearer the far post. Catalogue of errors really. You can't simply blame Andrews. The Stoke player in the left corner (Fuller?) had two Rovers players in front. Neither were making a serious attempt to pressure him on the ball. They were absolutely terrified of his pace. Fuller passed it back down the line and the cross came in. When our defenders our petrified of a player like Ricardo Fuller, you know we've got a crap team. Having said that, tactics can minimise weaknesses. If you identify your own strengths and the opponents weaknesses and focus the set-up of your team in those respects, then, theoretically, any inferiority in talent between two sides should be reduced. Yet Allardyce's tactics were poor. Benni McCarthy cannot play the lone forward role, to put it mildly.
den Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Yet Allardyce's tactics were poor. Benni McCarthy cannot play the lone forward role, to put it mildly. Who should have done? Diouf played just behind Benni, we don't have any other options do we?
Amo Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Who should have done? Diouf played just behind Benni, we don't have any other options do we? Carlos & Benni?
den Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Carlos & Benni? Allardyce got his best players onto the pitch. Playing Carlos instead of Diouf wouldn't have strengthened us - IMO of course.
Amo Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I disagree. Dunn & Carlos should have played. It's not rocket science that a team with Andrews & Mokoena in midfield, hoofing it up to Benni McCarthy was going to create naff-all - as proven. Dunn & Carlos would complement McCarthy's style of play and make space for other players.

Napoleon Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 You can all forget about Carlos, he will never start another game and will leave in summer. He does not fit into the style of play we are going with, whether we like it or not.
Amo Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Dunn was fit enough for the bench, and I think we would have got enough out of him before his batteries ran out. You can all forget about Carlos, he will never start another game and will leave in summer. He does not fit into the style of play we are going with, whether we like it or not. Sad, but true.
Eddie Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Who should have done? Diouf played just behind Benni, we don't have any other options do we? WE DIDN'T HAVE TO PLAY 4-5-1! It's as if some of you think we are required to play a lone striker.
den Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 WE DIDN'T HAVE TO PLAY 4-5-1! It's as if some of you think we are required to play a lone striker. We played with Benni and Diouf just behind him. Who else could have played as another front man? For goodness sake don't say Carlos.
Neil Weaver Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 We played with Benni and Diouf just behind him. Who else could have played as another front man? For goodness sake don't say Carlos. Mr Brick Wall, I think you've met Den's head before haven't you? I'd have given up weeks ago Den, more patience than me.

deryck guyler's spoon Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I don't think either were on peanuts deryck. I was refering to our "backers" and the quality of players that our managers have had to bring in due to their fantasy transfer budget.
thenodrog Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Good advice Neil. I might heed that. Indeed! Paul banned me a few yaers ago for saying what you are now thinking about eddie Den. I was of course completely accurate in my assessment as I'm sure that Paul will readily agree now that has returned to his mortal body. btw Isn't there a thread somewhere where eddie was referred to as doggy doos or similar?
Eddie Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I continue to be flattered by how much of your life you spend posting things about me on the internet.
LeChuck Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Dunn was fit enough for the bench, and I think we would have got enough out of him before his batteries ran out. It's not running out of steam that is the problem, he just doesn't look comfortable at all, he's sluggish and looks to be moving with difficulty. Villanueva really is the only realistic player we could promote to the first eleven, but he really doesn't look at all suited to the Premiership. That's nothing to do with our 'style' by the way, I don't think he'd fit into any team here because he's so slow and lightweight.
T4E Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I continue to be flattered by how much of your life you spend posting things about me on the internet. You go Eddie, don't let them grind you down. (You are talking @#/? on this one, though).
Exiled in Toronto Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 While I was more than tee'd off by the serial inept defending that followed Andrews error, his was an error of commission - needlessly giving possession away - while the rest were errors of omission - Nelsen didn't get near the ball; Samba didn't cover behind; MGP didn't do anything at all; Givet didn't show the man the outside; Robinson didn't get down quick enough. So, on this occasion, he deserves the blame. Having said that though, I can't imagine The Jowly One will be giving all the others a free pass on this.

Exiled in Toronto Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 Joint 3rd highest scorer in the league for us now, having scored twice as many goals in half the number of games than our allegedly more creative wide midielders, Emerton, Diouff and MGP put together. A bench player, but personally I'll take 4 goals a year from one of those

A bench player, but personally I'll take 4 goals a year from one of those He's just not flambouyant enough for the modern football fan. EHD fluffed the penalty today - it was a really poor effort - and then fluffed the rebound even worse. Andrews mops up the mess and saves Diouf's blushes ... ... and the away end comes out with the chant - "Diouf, Diouf, Diouf, Diouf ... Just because he p!sses opposition fans and players off, we have to make him an idol? No thanks.
AggyBlue Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Just because he p!sses opposition fans and players off, we have to make him an idol? No thanks. [/quote) You're not on your own, I saw a Rovers fan at the game today with a tee shirt with 'I 8 Diouf' and a cartoon pic of him spitting.
