Pennant has done nothing for a very long time, not since he managed to look decent in a pish poor brum team! £5.5m is a ridiculous valuation. There was'nt a player on the pitch for liverpool today that showed any more talent than you'd expect to see in the lower leagues..........and pennant still did'nt get a look in.

i'd like some pace, but i'd settle for ability/quality. Sooner throw villanuava on the wing to cut inside and take shots from distance or just show some composure and get his head up more than emo......not every team plays with a ripley esque hit the line and cross it winger.

Nicko just heard the "Valdo" deal could be pushed through tomorrow!

Heard anything? <_<

Welcome to modern football. When the likes of James Milner are going for 12 million, then 5 million for Pennant seems reasonable.

I won't judge Andrews yet, but I'm growing increasingly frustrated and concerned about the lack of proven quality being brought in.

"lack of proven quality" - normally proven quality costs big money - with similar big wages. With odd rare exception - I don't think Rovers can spend big money on proven players. We have to take gambles on players that haven't quite made it - Santa Cruz, pick up gems from other peoples reserves - Bentley, Samba or take a gamble on a free transfer - Nelsen.

I think it is too easy for fans to mistakenly think that buying big names will necessarily bring success. Ask Spurs or Newcastle fans (or even Liverpool fans - who have spent more trying to win the Premiership than probably any other club than Chelsea).

Rovers finances, even with the Bentley money, means we have to gamble. Ince has very much followed our previous approach -

Robinson, very much damaged goods, but would be the in the £10m bracket a couple of seasons ago

Simpson, up and coming right back

Andrews, early promise at previous clubs disappeared down the divisions (even after West Ham - still a gamble)

Carlos - taking any player from South America is always a gamble. But this is the one that pleased me most - he could be an absolute star if he comes off.

Bunn - up and coming from lower divisions

Only Grella could be described as "proven quality" - and even he has yet to do it outside Italy.

Robinson, very much damaged goods, but would be the in the £10m bracket a couple of seasons ago - Same goes for Carson - look where he ended up and for how much. Robinson is a big step down from Friedel

Simpson, up and coming right back Haven't seen enough to agree or disagree - but as far as I know it isn't a loan with a view to buy

Andrews, early promise at previous clubs disappeared down the divisions (even after West Ham - still a gamble) Yes, though one can argue that spending £1 million on a player isn't a big risk, even for Rovers

Carlos - taking any player from South America is always a gamble. But this is the one that pleased me most - he could be an absolute star if he comes off. Absolutely, but I would like to see us buy a bit safer too to maintain our top 10 status

Bunn - up and coming from lower divisions Backup for Robinson, hopefully with a bit of promise - can't really complain about that one

Only Grella could be described as "proven quality" - and even he has yet to do it outside Italy.

Answers above in bold. I know buying big names not necessarily will bring success, but I don't think we're in a position where we have to gamble as much as before when it comes to signings. Surely Ince had a bit of money to spend before Bentley left, so there has to be something left to spend still - hopefully enough to buy us a solid right winger.

I am amazed that anyone can make this statement - how many people on here doubted Andrews ability, and had to eat their words after the West Ham match ?

In reality - nobody knows who we have asked about - and at this moment in time who will replace Bentley come the end of the transfer window.

I wish everyone would get off Ince's back and give the guy a chance.

On the way back from West Ham I came to the conclusion that Andrews looked decent simply because Grella was so utterly dreadful. I would need to see both players a great deal more before I would assess their merits as Premier League players. However, the lack of a suitable replacement for Bentley was clearly obvious at West Ham and unless Ince can solve this problem within the next 24 hours it is going to be an issue that could well undermine the club's hopes for progress.

Wasn't just the West Ham game though was it?Of course we'd miss Bentley, at the bare minimum his crossing was superb - then again, I can't think any of the targets listed have that skill as their forte either.

I think a distinction has to be made in NEEDING a player in the mould set against the possibility/likeliehood of just being able to 'snap one up'. Not very likely methinks, nor is it really fair to think we could do - it's not for the want on trying though. In the meantime, I suggest we get some 'Jimmy Cricket' boots for Treacy and hope he gets his right foot crossing as well as his left, and swap sides.

Surely the Pennant-Stoke link is the famous Mark Hughes fish-hook manouevre? That is, make a feint for one move in the hope of drawing out another? Maybe it's Liverpool trying to advertise they're willing to sell him, and offering a lower price. Still think it's too much though, just because Kightly signed a new contract and spoke up for the club, Pennant and all his baggage, inc high wages no doubt, for 5 mill - how much would it take to tempt Kightly (albeit on lower wages too)?

Be funny to see if Pennant's feint is as successful as Hughes' one was.

Newcastle offered Owen a deal today which suggests if he says no he will be sold...

I have had a sneaky feeling Man U might do that one for some time - whether Berbatov moves or not.

Fergie has been into his ribs for months. Unofficially of course.

Newcastle are signing Xisco from Deportivo apparently so I wouldn't be surprised if Owen does go.

John Williams has confirmed in the Lancashire Telegraph that they are looking to sign a right sided midfielder today, he confirmed that there is money to spend but they wil spend it wisely if the price is not right they will wait until January. So those of you expecting a few signings today then you are going to be disappointed, we are only looking at right sided midfielder and even then the transfer will only go through if the price is right.

Disappointing that we are not looking at bringing in a creative midfielder.

We have got creative midfielders in Dunn, Villanueva, Andrews, and to some extent when in the middle Brett Emerton.

We got the dog players Reid, Mokoena, Grella. Add Tugay & Vogel into whatever group you want we are fine in the middle of the park in terms of numbers (if they turn out to be a success, who knows)

Right midfield is the only place we need to strengthen, though another striker could be wise.

Take away Bentley, and you have taken away half Roque's goals. God knows what's going on with Benni, Derbs will continue to be vacant but get a couple a season and theres only so many toe pokes and shin strikers Roberts will score a year.

Nice one Kamy!

All I want, is a right sided midfielder. When we get him in, this transfer window wont have been to bad.. business-wise.

Re: Creative midfielder, IMO this could wait till January. Dunny & Mr Pineapple could fill that role for now (well, when Dunn is 100% and Carlos is actually ready)
