Guest Kamy100 Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I hope you guys are right. The way I see it at the moment Carlos would not be able to play in central midfield, but I suppose he could be used very effectively if we had him playing of Roque. Totally agree that we need to get a right sided midfielder.

RibbleValleyRover Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Right sided midfielder/winger is definitely the priority, however with the players we have been linked with Pennant, Holman, Lopez and a few others they simply aren't good enough. I would have never agreed to the Bentley sale if I had known that the money from his sale wasn't going to be spent on a quality replacement. The Holman deal sounds totally stupid, swapping the solid Ooijer who was probably our best centre back last season for a left footed striker who for some bizarre reason we are looking to play on the right wing. It just doesn't make sense...
AussieinUk Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Right sided midfielder/winger is definitely the priority, however with the players we have been linked...Holman RVR - Holman is not a right sided player - not by any means* * IMY9 - Please, don't start on this.. again. I know you look for the positives and have never seen him play, but lets leave this one, eh?
Majiball Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 A right winger would be sound but just not for the sake of it. Even if we don't get one we'll be fine, once the defence start functioning as a unit and not a 3+1 at times. A cheeky 2M for Owen would be nice
Paulo Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 It doesnt make sense and it's probably a load of rubbish. Why we didn't hold Bentley until we found a replacement i'll never know. Why we didn't demand more money i'll never know, a team that spent £8 million on a right back, another £8 million on a goal keeper. My honest opinion right now is that with every other club being minted and having big investors is that John Williams is going to let Ince build a side that can remain in Premiership football. Not challenge Europe as a priority, but just stay in the league.
RibbleValleyRover Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 RVR - Holman is not a right sided player - not by any means* I know that, and if you read my last paragraph you can see how puzzled i am on why we are looking to bring him in. He is not the solution to our problems.
nicko Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 There's a board meeting going on right now to decide which right winger to go with... We should know a lot more later this morning - I think we have a fair idea of the names.

If not and only after you have resorted to stamping your feet and screaming but I want it. Then you can suggest Kightly. Cheers in advance.

It just doesn't make sense... I doubt that we are looking at Holman as a right winger. I might be wrong but it seems batty. It strikes me that he is more in line as striker cover. I think Ince may have decided McCarthy is not up to the job. As far as the "creative central midfielder" business goes theoretically at least we have strenthened considerably in this area. Grella - supposedly a passing defensive midfielder; Andrews - looks a decent technical player who can pass; and Carlos - genuinely looks quality; have all come in plus Dunn looks renewed (when not injured....) It seems Carlos was brought in on a remit as the new central creative force - yet we haven't got him to fit into the side yet, Andrews as cover for Dunn when he is injured, and Grella is going to take the deeper role. I don't think there is feasibly any room in our squad for any more central players. We actually need to sell at least one (Reid has to be out the door, as does the Axe) So rather than buying another "creative midfielder" we need to figure out how to slot Carlos in. Favourite for me is the Everton 451 formation where Villanueva could be afforded the same sort of freedom that Arteta has for the toffees. That could suit him rather well. The problem on the other hand is that this sort of formation does not really suit Cruz as he likes to play off someone rather than as a lone striker. Its not easy accomodating everyone...
joey_big_nose Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Interesting that the board would be so involved in this. I thought it would essentially be "heres you budget" then Paul chooses? Isn't that how it works most of the time. Realistically I think it is going to be Pennant if we can afford him. Stumbling block could be wages on top of the transfer fee. Anybody know more about this Valdo fella? This is the budget option where this could all be heading if we are "priced out" of a deal for the other names. That said, numbers wise, we should have quite a bit of cash floating around unless money has come out of the club for some reason? Maybe the board are going to sanction mega money for Joaquin or someone?

Personally I'd go with Seb Larsson or Kightly. Joaquin would be a bit of a risk at the money they want, if he redicvoers his form then he is a world beater but if not then £10m down the drain! Going to be a fun filled day I think, loads of deal s coming out already.
modes98 Posted September 1, 2008 Author Posted September 1, 2008 Corulka to Spurs. Deal agreed. Looks like you were right Nicko, just a few weeks early lol!

I've been wondering why we are yet to see this formation yet. RSC will need players round him and I do wonder if Andrews is the final piece that changes our formation for the trickier ties. If "the King" and RSC can develop the kind of relationship where as when RSC drops in Villa pushes up and on then it could work. However him playing in a free role that would mean he's not in the centre to do so at times, but then Andrews could push up to support RSC, or even the winger on the opposite side of play. I do want to see us shipping less goals so putting 3 in the middle should help Grella can then just sit with the back two.
Bobby G Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Cant see how we could sort something out for Joaquin who is in Spain... I think its between Holman, Pennant, maybe Ireland. Possibly Pennant is reachable...
last-minute-win Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 My monies on Pennant, for what its worth
joey_big_nose Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Cant see how we could sort something out for Joaquin who is in Spain... I think its between Holman, Pennant, maybe Ireland. Possibly Pennant is reachable... I don't see why kightly is not reachable. Just depends whether Ince thinks it is worth it? He has signed a new contract but could force Wolves hand with a large bid (6-7m?).

Possibly Pennant is reachable... If we can sort out a move for Holman in Holland, then why not Joaquin in Spain? Probably just have to take either of them and complete the deal subject to a medical on arrival, if you can do that or just take a gamble that they are fit.
vintageadidas Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Been away for a week. Could anyone update me on the names mentioned for the right wing?
Bobby G Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Best case scenario is Joaquin but I dont think there is time to do it for a start, without even knowing if he would consider us. Leaves domestic options or cheap foreign options. Holman bust be in contention, and I suggest Pennant must be too, and Kightly could be if it interests the board. Personally Ive only seen Pennant play BUT the Wolves boy excites me more.
rovers1995 Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Been away for a week. Could anyone update me on the names mentioned for the right wing? Brett Holman of AZ Alkmaar - This deal may take Andre Ooijer the other way Joaquin of Valencia Pennant of Liverpool Kightly of Wolves

Probably just have to take either of them and complete the deal subject to a medical on arrival, if you can do that or just take a gamble that they are fit. Perhaps given that its getting close to the end we could get Joaquin on a loan with a view. I can't imagine they are too keen to sell too Madrid. Kightly must be considered I cannot believe that they would not be interested in say 2.5M plus Reid. He would still be a big risk though coming up against premiership defences week in week out is completely different to championship ones. Personally I think he could do it.
imy9 Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I reckon we may sign Holman AND a right sided player. Exciting day ahead methinks! Aussiefan- for the record I have seen clips of Holman on youtube and his position has been as an attacking midfield player NOT a striker.
