[Archived] Nicko's Thread

Not really relevant to nicko's thread, but I thought both Souness and Hughes were extremely unhelpful as far as youth development was concerned.

Both seemed more than happy to draft in a Dickov, Baggio, Matteo, Berner, Rigters, or Henchoz on relatively high wages rather than giving youth its' head.

The new appointment seems extremely promising.

That's not really fair, nor correct. Granted, Hughes didn't really encourage youth to grow into the first team picture that much - apart from Judge back end last season, others in odd cup or Euro games or maybe Derbs. However, he DID buy into the proposed overhaul of the Academy focus for the next few years - which clearly Ince is looking to continue.

I'm glad about the ressy manager, they lost a good guy in Hodges (was he ever confirmed as the new City ressy manager?) and it's good he's linking up with Bowyer (sp) - who had a good record at Derby bringing youth through.

The club have committed to increase the amount of British talent over the next few seasons Academy wise, with the view of becoming like Boro, where they often bring through Academy lads into the first team and save on transfer fees. Next season should bring another couple of names into the first-team/squad frame that will always be nice to see.

I thought that plan was a dalglish idea.. that just continued under the stewardship of JW (under various managers).. then he setup the same thing at Celtic in a differant role.. with pretty good results from what I hear.

Sorry for going OT (mods can you move these threads to the Academy/young guns thread??)

It was all a matter of record Hughes implemented an overhaul of the Academy back end of last season, to suit the club's infamous 'five year plan'. Check out the news archives, it's all there! It is correct to say though Hughes was really the first manager after Dalglish to really look into joining up the Academy more to the first team, rather than two separate entities. Ince is just continuing that - both should be respected for doing so. Don't forget Dalglish's Rovers Academy plan was allegedly the 'template' for the Premiership Academy scheme.

Under Ince I don't think we'll see buys like Berner and Henchoz. Ince won't panic buy and certainly won't bring in deadwood like those two.

Edit: I also believe that Ince would have passed up the opportunity to sign Maceo Rigters.

Fowler?

I haven't seen much of Olic or Cavanni to be honest. Has any of the forum users seen them play on a regular basis and if so do you think they could work with Roque?

Cavani starred for Uruguay's U20 team last year. Got to the semis if i'm not mistaken. Having watched every single match of last summers' tournament, I thought Cavani was one of the finds of the tournament-- big, physical traditional No. 9 that was a load to handle but quick mobile at the same time.

(Also loved the Uruguayan No. 2.. I have to find the name, but a tremendous central defender, a leader, a John Terry type.)

But I digress..... I thought Cavani 's heading was quite a challenge for the Argentine and Brasilian defenses. The 12 million euro quotation surely reflects that potential which the Italians scouted---clearly not reflecting his scant production in Seria A. I love this player, but a Crap shoot at that price.

Similarily, Joaquin is also a big gamble. After two subpar years, I 'm nervous we might have seen Sanchez' better days. I just don't see him the same player in a Valencia kit--- bargepole stuff I'm afraid, Rovers cannot afford a big expensive miscue here for for 11 million

Someone had mentioned this was shades of Javier DePedro...ex Spanish national wingers, both have lost their starting place on that team, they even wear the same No. 17 shirt..... :o

Think about it.......... it's Xfiles stuff I tell. you !!!!

Possibly but I think Fowler will be a good deal. Sheringham was playing till he was 39 in the Premier League and was still scoring goals. Why not Fowler?

You answered your own question, because he was still scoring goals

Fowler can't even do that at 33

Will we see signings like Samba, RSC and David Bentley?

To have a pop at Hughes' transfer market record is incredible.

Today's Rovers-relevant BBC Gossip & Transfers:

Tottenham will allow striker Dimitar Berbatov to join Manchester United, with manager Juande Ramos keen to bring in Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan and Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz. (Daily Mirror)

Zzzz...

West Ham will hold talks with Chilean striker Sebastian Pinto, with a view to acquiring the Santos star, nicknamed the Tank, on a season-long loan deal. (Daily Mirror)

I'm assuming this is who Nicko is talking about.

I am relatively relaxed re Joaquin. Two years non-performance and no desire to move leagues spells a bit of trouble in terms of getting him motivated and performing again and those villages outside Seville where he comes from are at the somnulent end of sleepy. Brilliant if we get him and can restore him though.

However, if Olic is available at £5m, he is probably a much better fit than Benni is likely to be in the way we played at Everton irrespective of how highly I regard Benni's skills.

It might be better letting Pinto go to WHam if that means Ashton becomes available for transfer to Spuds.....

However, I doubt RSC would have his head turned in the way Bentley was, Spurs are unlikely to offer that much in wages and there are just 12 days of window left in which to have to resist any blandishments anyway.

Nicko, according to the Wrexham website Robbie Fowler played in the match yesterday. They carried a report on the game last night. What is the background of the player you mentioned called Tigay?

Aaah Tigay, he plays at the top level, slightly to the right of Tugay. Played there for a long long time ;)

Sebastian Pinto is the 'mystery' striker I was on about. Chilean, big and strong, very highly-rated. He signed for Santos in Brazil but fell out with the coach and is now available for sale, better still you can have him on loan first.

He is known to Carlos and could be company for him...but he is also a very decent player. Big and strong, knocks people about and scored on the deck and in the air. He has just one cap, so might struggle for a permit. However he may have an EC passport. Or get one made.

West Ham have been into him for a few weeks, but Alan Curbishley is not into the idea...his technical director has set it up and there is some politics.

Rovers have invited him over, but it seems he may have gone to London already. Obviously one of his agents is pushing him that way. But Rovers are still in this and could intercept the deal.

Not sure where he fits in the squad, but worth a look.
