tcj_jones Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I feel that we have today paid the price for our overly prudent manner in the transfer market this summer and will continue to do so until we bring in the necessary additions to the squad. Knowing that Bentley would be off in the summer and a distinct absence of quality in the centre of the park being clear for all to see for about two years now (Dunn excluded, but we should also have been aware of his proneness to injury) we should have had as many as five players lined up for each position and should have had the squad ready and fit for the upcoming campaign. There really is no excuse for going into teh season without new signings in these positions. We don't have a single naturally right sided wide player. We don't have a single dependable central midfielder, whether that be down to age, inconsistency or injury. We haven't addressed these problems and that is hugely negligent.

Oklahoma Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I think ROvers main priority should be to sign a right midfielder. It is obvious that we need someone that can actually play there. Joaquin, SWP, anyone that could improve the squad would be welcome. Maybe a right back would not be a bad idea as well, if Simpson is not a first team player.
Majiball Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Three words - Shaun Wright Phillips. Playing every week would be an attraction to him, as would a return to the north. Chelsea now appear ready to sell/loan out as Scolari all but said this morning. We have the money, get in and get it done. NICKO - Has he even been considered? I thought that too when I saw the report they now might be willing to let him go. His wages may not be a problem chelsea can make up the difference it would not be the first time. He could go home, and he would play week in week out and his pace would be a great weapon. I still prefer Joaquin and would be interested to see what would happen if we matched Valenia's demands.

Aside from that (and some of the hyperbole) I agree - a proper right sided midfielder and a creative centre are a must. As I said earlier, odd decision leaving Villanueava out today.
krislu Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Three words- no no no Too expensive Wages ridiculous Can do much better Ignore the English rubbish and shop abroad. No we can't, which is why Reid is currently our replacement for Bentley.
Eddie Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 SWP was an absolutely fantastic player at Man City, no reason he can't get it back. For the right sort of fee he'd be a wonderful signing.
nicko Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Keith Andrews was at the Rovers game today...about to sign. Humble pie has just gone in the oven for those needing helpings.
Eddie Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I guess he was pleased to see that we play at his level?
rovers1995 Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I expected it Nicko, anything else you can tell us about possible incomings/outcomings.

Haha, you've misunderstood my post. We should have had up to five possible options for the two vacant positions: CM and RM. God knows we've had the time to do our homework! It actually shocks me that we've had people in on trial for those positions.
roversmum Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Keith Andrews was at the Rovers game today... So was Big Sam Allardyce.......................
John Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 God knows we've had the time to do our homework! Ince was saying the opposite yesterday, saying he has not had time to line up his targets. Maybe, that is why we are seeing a safety first policy in the transfer market.
brfcshabba Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 So was Big Sam Allardyce....................... Possibly there to see how Phil Brown is getting on
tcj_jones Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Ince was saying the opposite yesterday, saying he has not had time to line up his targets. Maybe, that is why we are seeing a safety first policy in the transfer market. Certainly any player that is brought in must be to the manager's liking, but all previous work on prospective targets does not rest on that persons shoulders. When Hughes left, he didn't take with him all the work and research that the club had undertaken during his time there.
krislu Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 SWP was an absolutely fantastic player at Man City, no reason he can't get it back. For the right sort of fee he'd be a wonderful signing. Even though you are sitting in a million euro flat in Paris, you're right! Having Ried or Emerton on the right is sooo far away from the quality SWP would offer; if we can get the lad for a decent fee £7-8m max, then it WILL be a good signing for us.
tcj_jones Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 It would be an absolutely sensational signing!
AJW Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 SWP would have made a difference today , if he had been in a rovers shirt we would have had 3 points , today much like last season we were too slow too laboured in midfield , no penetration , dunny tried god bless him , but without pace and or creativity in the side we will continue to struggle when teams come to ewood and defend
nicko Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 I expected it Nicko, anything else you can tell us about possible incomings/outcomings. Nothing major that I know of...just the names previously mentioned.
Brownie Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Nothing major that I know of...just the names previously mentioned. Can you give us some City depression to cheer us up ?
nicko Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Can you give us some City depression to cheer us up ? News at 10.30. But it's a bit of a shocker.
AJW Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Nothing major that I know of...just the names previously mentioned. no 11o'clocker then nicko ? d'oh too late News at 10.30. But it's a bit of a shocker. ......rovers related or city?
1878 Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 nicko, anything to add about Riera after this morning's article? His agent is saying the player wants to go to Liverpool, do you still expect him to sign for Everton?
rovers1995 Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Nicko, can you see rovers being interested in SWP, and is there anything happening with michael kightly.
nicko Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 nicko, anything to add about Riera after this morning's article? His agent is saying the player wants to go to Liverpool, do you still expect him to sign for Everton? Everton have offered £12 million...Liverpool haven't. Don't know where the agent is coming from. Maybe old quotes. Everton think they are getting him, although I have to say we have heard that a few times this summer. Nicko, can you see rovers being interested in SWP, and is there anything happening with michael kightly. SWP is a cracking little player but very expensive. Heard nothing on Kightley.
Eddie Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Even though you are sitting in a million euro flat in Paris, you're right! I like how the value of my property has doubled since your last price quote at 17:30. Could you become my banker?
