[Archived] Vince Grella Signs

Recommended Posts

Apparantly Grella reported back for pre season training on the same day as all the non-international lads, despite him being entitled to another month off.

Looks like he's really working hard to hit the ground running this season, good on him.

Hamstring tweeks around pre season are common, I would think a week at tops here, they are not normally anything to do with buying crocks, its just a hazard of pre season especially when a guy is trying too hard to get fit, you can overdo things!!

No matter what Tugay will be missed greatly. Up there with Samba as player of the month for April imo.

pure conjecture, but do people not feel a 39 year old tugay would have contributed more than 'bubble boy' grella will this season.

Can we start spread betting, i'll be the bookie.......grella to play 90 minute 7 times this season, higher or lower! What a truly awful signing, how much money have the mk dons got, only be fair for ince to re-sign him and do something right for rovers.

If we're half as skint as we're always banging on about, we do imo need to start taking a tougher line with players that aren't performing/permanently injured.

Not much we can do about Grella at this stage I suppose but I note recently there has been talk of new contracts for Dunn, Reid and MGP. None of those have shown enough recently to warrant that have they?

Likewise Andrews did pretty well for a player originally intended as backup last season but did he really show enough to warrant a 4 new year contract?

On a similar theme I think nicko opined a while ago that Nelsen would be on 40k p.w. Worth that before his serious injury undoubtedly but now? I can't see that myself.

What's the news on Grella exactly? Last I heard was he just had a little niggle, is it now something more serious?

£4m for Grella was criminal, regardless of his injury record.

No idea what is exactly what wrong with him but in the post match commentary on Rovers player they had an interview with Sam and he said that both Grella and Dunn had picked up knocks and wouldn't be fit for the start of the season, only sounded like he meant a couple of games though.

I would get rid of Reid, but Grella is a quality player, he has just been unlucky to have suffered a long-term injury that has kept him out of the first team. He's had a very long career playing in the Italian first division as a REGULAR and has been one of the key members of the Australian national team for a number of years. I've seen him play on a number of occasions and I will continue to stand by my opinion that he is a good player and can do very well.

Don't expect him to do anything special, he plays as a defensive midfielder, so he won't be scoring many goals. Nevertheless, he has always been a very solid player in the centre of midfield and if he's partnered with a creative player then you can be assured of having a very strong midfield for the team.

If he's fit for this season then I will expect him to prove me right.

Precisely, "If" That's the biggy, at the moment he is Glass Back Grella.

I do actually rate the guy, but we can't afford to have another part timer, our Midfield already has it's full compliment, I include MGP in that equation for reasons of form and not his injury record, we currently we have Andrews in Midfield and some newbies who are going to have to learn really quickly, that's a lot to expect of them already.

I'd love to see Dunny, Grella and Reid to be fit for the majority of the season, who wouldn't? However, they've not had a pre season (Again for some of them) and it's an area of concern.

N.B. I think we really missed Emerton last year, he was, up until his injury, our star performer IMHO.

Or David Dunn. Grella started twice as many games as Dunn last season.

At least Reid was fit when he joined us. And Dunn was a known quantity--thats why he only cost 2M. The reason that people are so p****d off about Grella is that he came to us injured, aged 29 and for 4M. He lasted for 45 mins of his first game at West Ham and we saw little to justify that 4M thereafter. Now which incompetant fool shoiuld we blame for that? Not Grella by the way.

I have to say Reid is so over rated on this board, i always thought he was average, then scored a screamer at Wigan and everyone went barmy, Dunn has talent but is without a doubt on the slide, he won't get better and he'll get more injuries, as for Grella, he pretty much sums up Paul Ince for me. How we spent 4 million on that is beyond me.

how anybody can think Reid is going to make a difference is beyond me - been out of the game for virtually 2 seasons - has had no pre season and was touching average before is last injury.

The guys had it (at least as a Premiership player)

Grella is a joke and needs shipping out asap

Dunn - was hopeing he could get a pre season in without injury as was fearing last season his injury would see his Premiership return would be short lived - worth keeping as our only creative midfielder of any note if injuries not serious - even if he doesn't complete 90mins

As I have said before - we need at least 2 midfielders - preferably one who is left sided - we have no backbone to the team - you need a midfield of some form reagrdless of what formation - is it any wonder we crumble at times - its like removing a vertebrae from out of your back or having a slip disc.

Regardless of last season end of form ( if that's what you call it - I think mopre desperation) we need some injection of new quality blood - its been our weakspot for nearly 3 seasons.

Mmhm. He had that purple patch a couple of seasons ago, when he was linked with Man.Utd, but he rarely stood out before or after that.

I don't know how professional footballers in the prime of their lives, are able to become so crocked.

Reid is extremely overrated by this board in a similar way Jansen and Derbyshire were, even in his peak form for the club he was above average, Man Utd might have asked the question but United were also at the time looking at Roy Keane replacements, the fact they chose Alan Smith out of position over a bid for Reid says enough for me.

Grella will come good, he has a better pass then anyone we currently have in the squad and we will see his stuff.

Jansen was a fantastic player and that was widely acknowledged within the English game. Hence the fact that he was all but on the plane to the world cup.

Derbyshire was a local lad, im not sure anyone though he was a world beater, but we all had an extra passion for him to do well and he has a great ability to put the ball in the net.

Grella, has proved nothing.
