I do know what you mean cos two years ago I had an operation on my knee and the surgeon told me that I had torn my cruciate ligament in the past. I did'nt realise it was my cruciate (until Shearer got hurt I'd never even heard of them) but I do rem exactly when it was. I was 15 and the lunge / tackle happened not in a match but in a coats down kickabout ffs. I thought my knee was broken. The Infirmary bandaged a full leg splint down my leg for a few weeks and that was that. A weak gammy knee that I had to 'carry' through matches for life. Didn't stop me playing until my 30's .... (a torn cartiledge to the same knee from another bad tackle...two footed from the back this time) but it certainly made tackling, being tackled and turning quickly to the right difficult.

My point is that football without physical contact is as boring as food without salt. Rugby is the same, a local lad broke his neck playing rugby at 19 and ended up paralysed. It's a horror injury that happens all to frequently in that sport, but physical contact and scrums have not been outlawed have they? Boxing is another sport that carries inherent danger. Grand Prix cars and bikes is now so safe that it puts more people to sleep than Horlicks. Why do you think the IoM TT races are still such an attraction?

Tepid, antiseptic sport is user friendly but unfortunately not spectator friendly. A harsh but true comment on the human race. The gladiators didn't use wooden swords did they? How does it rest with you that apart from the final whistle people only get out of their seats during a match for two reasons? Namely when a goal is scored and when a bad challenge occurs, think about it. We are horrified and outraged of course but above all we get the adrenalin rush that we are all addicted to.

I'm all for the physical side of things but there has to be a balance between it all. There's only ever one loser in these situations and its not the one who gets banned/riducled in the press, its the one who has done no wrong. You have to remember that its not just Pro's that are effected, the same rules filter donw the whole pyramid. Amatuer players who have to work for a living are effected and an ACL injury or the such means most likely they can't completely do their real job. Only the pro's and contracted players still get paid.

I don't want english football to become so nancy boy like that you can't even shoulder to shoulder and tackling becomes a non entity. But tackling of that aspect is not really intended to win the ball, as they could just use one leg. When they come in extending both legs at the same with studs showing is there intent to get the ball or to hopefully get the ball and the player as well? In that situation grella's task was to get the ball out of play I could have done that with only one leg, as you can rotate the hip and actually reach further, it only needs a slight touch and its gone job done. Tackling from behind should also be allowed provided its done a certain way, IE hooking round the player to get the ball first.

As I said I'm happy to see physical battles its a contact sport but certain types of contact should not be allowed. Boxing is a diffirent kettle of fich due to the fact you are intending to do harm to win the match. Grnad prix I agree is now boring but I would say that type of tackle is akin to me going to overtake you and then clipping you to force you off the track.

Unfortunatly I didn't suffer a tear, I had a full snap and after several comeback attempts have to date had 11 op's on both knee's resulting in eventually having ACL replacements (first incident was not football related but I did both knees at the same time, along with sevral other injuries). I can now no longer run continously for much more than 20 minutes let alone play for 90. I cannot control my legs as I used to as all pro-preoception is now so reduced that I'm not even half what I was. No medical science can ever give me back what I lost. I do a lot of coaching in the fitness and turning running field and have to spend 45 minutes warming up and wear a knee brace on both knee's to give me more stability, can't say I always do as they are bloody horrible things to turn in. My desire to play has cost me but also some shocking tackles have played a big part especially the one mentioned.

There has to be a balance and better protection to players from that sort of "seeing red" tackle. But I still want to see tackles and battles, just not full blown wars.

Watching football for me is not the same as it was when I was just a fan/player. I can no longer go and just enjoy the game I analysis the game, passes, options choices and the such fly through my head constantly. Christ I even take a notebook with me to most games, ensure I get the best vantage point available, because for me a football match is a learning oppurtunity. I even turn up sober!!! 45 mins early to watch the warm-ups and note down what they do. As much as the game fill's me with passion I have never been able to just watch since becoming a coach.

I can't see a single quote in that story. If we said he wasn't for sale, it would only be to talk his price up. There really is no logic in keeping Grella at the club. In two years he's proved that he can't keep himself fit, and he's hardly a valuable match-winner. Time to go.

He is clearly available - its just if Gala are daft enough to pay us for him....come on Lucash work your magic & convince them he's a world star!

There is no quote in the LET either, you don't get many quotes in Nicko's articles regarding possible targets, doesn't mean it's true or false.

Tribal may not be the best source but probably picked up from the above, Let usually work with the club, so maybe they asked for no quotes to be printed, like others have said maybe it's been put out to try and push his stock up a little.

He can go for me, I certainly won't loose any sleep over him.

Inside an old guy chinned a young lad after the mickey taking had become too much for the old geezer, only problem was the young lads dad was present and he seemed to lose his 'rag', it all settled down pretty quickly though until they all began to congregate waiting for the taxis to come, then it went off again so i'm reliably informed. Note these were Darweners.

Nothing new here just lazy local journalism because they see Rovers and the name Paul Merson and feel they can fill a paragraph in their sorry rag the LT.

As it now is being reported Galla are close to a deal (1.8m) I'm wondering who we may be looking at to replace him, or maybe Sam thinks we can work round him with what we have. Hope not.

1.8m is a bit less than I thought we would get for him, possible deal with Galla to leave Guti alone????? ;)

It's apparent that SA wants another creative midfielder in the squad as it's clear that Dunny is simply not robust enough to pin our hopes on. The low cost option Basturk has obviously not passed muster with Sam so he's having to deal within nthe squad to find a player fit and able to play that role and cope with the rigours of the Prem.

It's an interesting situation.

In his best performances Grella has looked okay to good, but still nowhere near as effective as Savage in his heyday. However in forty odd appearances he has managed even this modest level of performance only about five times! Most of the time he has been woefully off the pace.

One of the worst transfers for us in recent times, especially when you consider the proportion of the transfer budget he took up. I can't believe how lucky we have been in getting that sort of fee for him.

Midfield has, without any incomings, massively improved since last year. NZonzi and Olsson look like the genuine article while Hoilett and Linganzi look like they could develop further next season. We have quite an exciting proposition for next season provided we can add one player of real quality and experience to compliment the young lads.

Guti can offer that - although I would say it is pretty important that he adapts to a deeper role. I cannot see the sense in bringing the Spaniard in to play behind the striker. We are already well covered with Dunn and Pedersen, plus if we sign a proper target man Kalinic could find himself competing for that area too.

Always injured, too slow ( possibly cos he's always injured ), very limited set of skills and a bit of a crack-pot to go with it. We are well rid of him. Cannot understand how we ever paid so much for him. Well I can really given the manager who did it.

Really jbn? Even when one's a sick note and the other is miles away in terms of attacking qualities? A top player in that position should drag better performances out of the pair of them. Rem Berkovitch? A fantastic playmaker and how daft would it have been to ask him to play deep as a midfield growler?

I can see him being injured again before to long, the way he carrying on in the friendlies anyone would think he didn't want to go to Gala.

h\Hammered by the USA and are star ;) gets

Grella – 4.5 – Cheaply conceded possession in the lead-up to the opener, and never appeared confident. As time passed, he grew increasingly frustrated, and eventually made a very poor challenge on Dempsey.

I just hope we take the £2m on offer and run - Grella has been very poor every time I have seen him.

Guti would be interesting signing - just hope he can pick up the pace of the Prem quickly.

Left field alternative (and probably too expensive now) but Charlie Adam is the sort of player we are after in the middle of the park, also the right age. Won't leave Donkey Lashes to end of next season now though...

I agree, I'd take Adam in a heartbeat. But your right he will be pricey, especially if he has a decent season next year.

Saw some of the highlights from the Aussies friendly game against USA on EuroSports and every highlight they showed seem to see Grella giving the ball away. He looked absolutely kncackered by full-time as well, did he play the full match?
