John
I'll probably get slated for this, but I personally feel, when fit (I know this isn't very often) Grella is one of our best midfielders. He breaks up play well, and his passing is also very good. Probably our best central midfielder when fit. You can never blame an indivdual for injuries, as you can't control your body. He has been unlucky, and if this is the end for him, then best of luck in the future. Just a shame we didn't get to see more of him. Think we could be in the minority on this one however I think Grella is a decent player – he is good at holding his position and shielding the back four – also is a fairly good tackler & can break up play. Whilst his passing can be erratic, he usually can pass the ball well either simply or longer down the channels if necessary (if there is good movement off the ball). Obviously the fact he is never fit means we have not seen enough of him, plus does not provide him with any opportunity to gain momentum in relation to form and playing with his teamates. den
Along with Andrews and Kalanic, I've never come away from a game thinking "what a cracking game he had today. Bad signing, costly and not up to it.
philipl
About 50% of his games have been very good performances. Andrews is no miss but I would have rather have had the option of Grella beig available in the run-in

Torgeir
How can a sportsman in the prime of his life be so crippled? It baffles me. I think it's down to the demands of professional football. Players have been rushed back far too often to action because there's so much money in the game that every point counts. When recurring injuries start appearing for some players it's already too late - he might be better off taking a longer period completely away from football just focusing on his core fitness. Either that or retire...
beerwins
Take this guy out to pastures greener and shoot the bugger, biggest waste of wages I have ever known. He missed some matches in preseason I think it was because of a cold!!! Poor little lamb. I saw him play for Oz in the world cup he made Emerton look like a world beater, Slowest player I have seen for ages, even Kevin Davies managed to beat him an a race for the ball. How long left on this guys contract?

joey_big_nose
Grella is okay passer and can tackle a bit, but even injuries aside he is far too static. The Jones brothers are miles better (and seem to be rubbing off on Nzonzi). When you factor in the cost and that he will have to be totally written off Grella is arguably the worst signing since Grabbi.
LeChuck
With the lack of midfield signings Grella really needs to start repaying the club with performances on the field, at least until January. He's the only natural backup/competition for N'Zonzi and Petrovic - Dunn and Pedersen make is too vulnerable, especially as we're likely to play with two/three attacking midfielders further forward so a solid base further back will be vital. Hopefully Kean will start playing him now. I think Kean might have been holding him back to try and sell him. He's not injured anyway, he wanted a call-up to the recent Australia squad but he wasn't included.
Balwer
Have we had any word from the club on whether he has been injured or just kept out of the squad because they wanted to sell him? If he's here and fit he can do a job. Big if but I think in a 4-2-3-1 he'd do well alongside N'Zonzi or Petrovic.

Wish we had managed to shift him out as he has been useless for us and a complete wage drain. However, now that the window has closed I think we need to make do with what we have, and that includes Grella. For me Petrovic is totally unproven and shouldn't be rushed into the first team until he is ready. Pedersen is too weak in the holding midfield role so I would be giving Grella a chance alongisde N'Zonzi until Petrovic is well and truly established. Grella is slow and can be clumsy, but when he is on his game he can tackle effectively and break up play. And his passing can be reasonable when he is playing well...he is one of the few in our squad that can control the tempo in the middle of the park. Backroom DE. Posted September 1, 2011 Backroom Share Posted September 1, 2011 Surely there are now grounds to officially have "Grella" as a subsitute word for "Injury"? "He's been Grella'd, may never play again" for example.
mhead
Reading thru the thread it is never stated WHAT he is actually injured with. Is any part of his body fit to play football. Perhaps we should nominate him for the Paralympics. Where is Hughesy when you need him?

Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted September 1, 2011 Moderation Lead Share Posted September 1, 2011 I remember a couple of games where he played really well, but that's about it. m1st
When I heard that Brett was going back Down Under, I kinda hoped the club were doing a "Bogof" [in at least two senses of the phrase ] deal!
farhanology
What is his status currently? We're quite short for DM covers especially after Emo leaving. That said I actually rate him better than Nzonzi - similar attributes, but not a set piece threat obviously. But he is the best distributor of the ball in the club and does not slow our passage of play, too often what Nzonzi is guilty for.

Agree that he is a better DM than Nzonzi, in fact I'm not entirely convinced he is a DM at all. Good solid player but I can't remember him breaking up many opponents' attacks. Still a good player but for me he isn't a true DM. He is probably injured. Grella is a really good player-when fit. I bet we have only seen him 100% fit once or twice, if at all. This is just not acceptable, I think he should follow Mauricio Taricco's lead and give the club some money back from his wages. I know I'm covering old ground here but what the hey. frosty
But he is the best distributor of the ball in the club and does not slow our passage of play, too often what Nzonzi is guilty for. Long, innaccurate passes is all that Grella seems to be capable of. One of which might come off every now and then. If he kept it simple then it'd be much better - like N'Zonzi does now.
