I thought Sparky's stock fall back phrase was "to be fair" or even more frequently "in all fairness"

At the Fans Forum John Williams and Tom Finn have made the point repeatedly that Hughes is very assured behind the cameras now but was by no means like that when he first arrived at Ewood. In fact they say Sparky was painfully shy initially - so there is a good chance Paul Ince will improve his interview technique as time goes on.

Then again, I wouldn't say Alex Ferguson interviews very well at all.

And not at all on the BBC! :P

Talking about people who don't interview very well, I saw Richard Branson on TV the other day and he came across as a bumbling buffon and we all know he isn't... The camera does wierd things to people. It does wierd things to Ince's dancing eyebrows too... :D

Yes, spot on.

And he always talked about levels...

"We didn't reach the level of play that we expect."

In fact I think Roy Hodgson gives about the best inteviews now.

Ince will get better in time. Good point about Sparky initially.

Ince says 'to be fair' quite a bit as well. Anyway, I have noticed that Ince comes across much better on the Rovers World interviews (where he seems more relaxed).

I think he will improve in this respect (and that goes with his general managerial skills as well).

'To be fair' is a footballers' cliche, like ya know how they...........say like or ya know............like all the time ya know.

Paul might be like Gary Linekar. Starts off s---ting himself at every interview, but gradually gets better at it. Could have Steve Coppell though. He's honest, but he does drone on. Strachan, Big Phil and Ian Holloway are the most entertaining managers.

certainly on the one at the end of last season's video, he comes across quite well. But then he'd just arrived and was under no pressure. If results and performances pick up you'll find he relaxes I think but at the moment he must be aware that there are loads of people just waiting to pick holes in whatever he does or says and that is enough to make anyone nervous.

Phil Brown gets on my nerves when he refers to 'the football club', if he just said 'the club' we'd know what he meant. He also refers to himself in the third person quite a lot as well 'that wasn't the performance of a Phil Brown side'. Tosser.

Andy Todd had the right idea if you ask me.

In the Daily Telegraph today Ince is quoted: “It is a transitional period at this club. People have to understand that we have just come here and are changing things slowly because you can’t change them overnight."

Given what Hughes built up over the last 3 seasons and the finishes we achieved, plus the cup runs, the settled squad and the fact we did not lose too many players in the summer, why does Ince think things need changing?

Surely, building on the good work done by the previous manager would be better?

All managers have their own styles of play and own ideas. Regardless of how well a previous manager has done, anyone coming in will want to try and play the way they are comfortable. Ince has played a certain style at his two previous clubs that has worked for him and he will obviously try and do that at Ewood. He has to manage his way and that will take time to get across to the players.

His way may ultimately be not very good, but I can fully understand why he will change things and why we are in a 'transitional period.' Then again, I'm not looking to criticise everything Ince says or does regardless of logic.

Ince has brought new players in, it's a new management team with their own style and ideas so it is a transitional period. It's a transition from Hughes as manager and his ideas and style to Inces. It's honest and yes it'll be awkward at times. There's no getting away from it. To say 'I can build on what he has done here' is probably untrue. Hughes never said it when he joined us and he never said it when he joined City.

Things change and need adjusting to; it's the nature of life.

Especially if you're thick.

Even when you're not. ever tried letting someone video you doing your job. Even when you do things automatically normally your hands and feet feel about twice their normal size. Once went to the Millennium dome to film a report for Granada and ended up saying some totally inane things (most of which were televised) because my brain just couldn't come up with anything better. My husband and I are both graduates but when we came out of the tube station and saw the dome, he said "Oh, it's really white," and I said "Grief, it's big!"
