thenodrog Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Santa cruz was a well known quantity & samba cannot be considered a gamble as he played european football & cost very little. Do you think hughes would have been prepared to sign Carlos? Dunno... Do you know when were the club first linked with Carlos Villanueva and under which manager? Was he first brought to our attention by Paul Ince? I don't know the answer at this point btw but somehow I doubt it.

philipl Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Enviable selection problems for Ince. Very early days but even with a full on injury crisis (at least seven first team squad regulars out), Ince now has the nice problem of making a tough call between players who are performing in pretty well every part of the filld. Brown v Bunn v Bussman Simpson v Ooijer v Emerton Warnock v Olsson Nelsen/Samba v Ooijer/Zura Shake 'em up and take your pick of four from Villanueva, Emerton, Tugay, Andrews, Warnock, MGP, Treacy Two from RSC, Roberts, Derbyshire and Fowler. Cannot complain about lack of strength in depth. We shouldn't have any relegation problems the way the squad is currently panning out.
Neil Weaver Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 But if memory serves, you didn't like Hughes or Souness either! Is there anything in life that you do like, apart from the Ribble Valley, Rupert Murdoch and The Labour Party? If I may be so bold, the board's little ray of sunshine also seems to have a penchant for steam trains and cricket I seem to remember. Thoroughly well balanced
Eddie Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Dunno... Do you know when were the club first linked with Carlos Villanueva and under which manager? Was he first brought to our attention by Paul Ince? I don't know the answer at this point btw but somehow I doubt it. We were first linked with him when Ince came in, he specifically asked an agent for a player similar to Zarate, so it had nothing to do with Hughes. I've yet to see any evidence of us going on a worldwide scouting mission apart from when we were linked with those two Costa Ricans (think that is what they were) and that came to nothing. Santa Cruz may be from South America, but he had been playing for one of Europe's biggest teams for years. Samba was a good find, but the work was done by an agent, not by our scouting network. If this club really ever wants to develop then we need to be bringing in more players from abroad and hoping to develop them. I remember the Costa Ricans didn't join because of work permit issues, why do we have our feeder club in Belgium?
cn_barlow Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 BRFC under Hughes had already embarked on a world wide scouting mission or so we are lead to believe. Need proof.... where do you think Paraguay and Congo are? Germany?
CrazyIvan Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008  You might laugh but both Santa Cruz and Samba were playing their football there.
LeChuck Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 1. The bully boy tag was a figment of the imagination of the London gutter press and totally undeserved! It was completely deserved when we acquired it, it just stuck for too long after we ditched that style. Dickov, Savage, Mokoena, Neill, Matteo...it was a really tough team, from back to front. Mokoena put in some crunching tackles, and Neill and Matteo were just dirty sods.

Also look at our yellow and red card rate under Hughes I believe we were in the bottom 3 every season under Hughes for cards gained.

I always got the impression that Hughes gave up on trying to shack that tag, remember we danced all over norwich (i know it was only norwich) after worthington slagged us off for being bully boys! we never got praised for good football!!
almuncle Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 You might laugh but both Santa Cruz and Samba were playing their football there. Yep. i think that's why it's funny
imy9 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Hopefully this dispels a myth perpetuated by the anti Ince brigade on here that Brad and Ince fell out resulting in Brad moving to Villa: http://www.tribalfootball.com/?q=content/v...rn-appoint-ince Brad and Ince were friends and are still friends.
ABBEY Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 imy chill out dude your gonna have blood pressure with your obsession of ince and the "anti ince brigade! oops i mentioned chill, imy i herby declare i have nothing against eskimos.
American Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 oops i mentioned chill, imy i herby declare i have nothing against eskimos.
imy9 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 imy chill out dude your gonna have blood pressure with your obsession of ince and the "anti ince brigade! oops i mentioned chill, imy i herby declare i have nothing against eskimos. I seem to have gotten under your skin Abbey, the irony of your above comment has obviously been lost on you (would you like to mean to provide a definition for that word too ) The comment I made was because the Brad thread consisted of DOZENS of pages devoted to Ince causing Brad to leave, now that we have the FACTS, do you suggest that this be brushed under the carpet? Oh yeah, to clarify "chill" is a generic word which can be associated with Eskimos, if you had said that you hate Eskimos for no reason, then Abbey you are prejudiced against them, hope that helps.
ABBEY Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 sorry imy it takes a lot more than a few poxy words on a message board to get under my skin....chill
imy9 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 sorry imy it takes a lot more than a few poxy words on a message board to get under my skin....chill I have just responded to your comment on the other thread, what did you call me, "a little git" No you are chilled
almuncle Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 I think that in this world of P.C you should both be referring to the Eskimos as Inuit.
thenodrog Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Oh yeah, to clarify "chill" is a generic word which can be associated with Eskimos, if you had said that you hate Eskimos for no reason, then Abbey you are prejudiced against them, hope that helps. Apparently if you are travelling across the Arctic it's custom for an Eskimo to offer you overnight stay in his igloo and that means that you get to share the same bearskin bed rug as his missus too. Now I'm fairly sure that would not cause Abbey to hold any hard and fast feelings against them for that!
mark1875 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 well 6 premiership games played and we are doing well in 6th place! we are through 2 rounds of the carling cup and some of the football on show again today was magnificant - just as it was on wednesday night. all those people who insisted on slating paul ince before a ball was even kicked must take a look at themselves and ask "why was i so critical of the manager of my football team before a ball was even kicked, why didnt i get behind him and support him? and why are we producing great football and good result, because this is not what i predicted, but then what did i know?"
imy9 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 If Ince had 4 points from 6 games, I would not be calling for him to be sacked, likewise after 10 points I am not going to eulogise over him but will say that Ince has shown promise and I am excited by the style of play and the managers statement of intent "if you play well, you will start the next game", it is refreshing and you can see that the players want to play for Ince, long may it continue as it is a long season.
joey_big_nose Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Ince is doing extremly well in an extremely different wyay to what i have seen before. He is experimenting in afashion few in the prem do to be honest and I like it. Man Utd will be a good test to see if we have learnt our lessons from the Arsenal game.
SIMON GARNERS 194 Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Fair play Paul Ince for his brave decisions with team selection....its paying off. Keep it going fella,we're doing fine.
daveoftherovers Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Fair play Paul Ince for his brave decisions with team selection....its paying off. Keep it going fella,we're doing fine. Couldn't agree more Garners, in the aftermath of the Arsenal game I actually thought we were goosed and maybe he was out of his depth, but Fulham, Everton and now the skunks has restored my faith! Bring on the Manchester Redsox (Franchisee's)
