Credit where it's due so I'll give you that .... but only up to a point with Warnock. However Carlos only really has one position imo.

See! I knew you'd warm to Ince in the end. B)

Actually I think the Warnock experiment has run its course. He is not a consistently good passer of the ball. I think Ince will move him back to LB today. I would like to see Carlos given a more central role (as suggested by Chileandude).

Anyway, here is some more "Ince is wonderful" evidence just to keep you going:

http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Foo...britain-locale/

Emerton feels Paul Ince has brought a number of new ideas to the club and is backing him to lead Rovers into Europe.

“It has been an up and down start to the season,” Emerton told Setanta Sports News. “We have had some fantastic results and some not so good ones.

”We are reasonably happy sitting in the top half of the table and hopefully we can kick on and challenge for another Uefa Cup spot.

“He (Ince) has been fantastic. He has brought in some new ideas and good players, so I think he is going to be good for the team.”

Agree with you on both those points you have made. Although for the game against 'boro today, I don't want to see Gamst start and I don't think Treacy has 'legs' to start either.. maybe as a sub. PI has already made comments in the LT that Olssen is still quite young. That only leave Mr Pineapple

Still too early to make a call on Ince one way or the other yet. We're not doing a Hull or a Spurs after all.

11 games played and only lost one to clubs outside the top 4, comfortably mid-table and still in the cup. Not bad for a club in transition, and I for one would have gladly settled for that if asked in early July. I think it gives Ince the time to assess the squad and make some targetted buys in Jan; let's see if he does.

That'll be the litmus test for mine. I've been quite happy with Ince so far, but I'll be disappointed if he doesn't bring in a few players that fit his system in the transfer window. He's using Hughes' squad, but playing his own style of football - and the shortcomings of the squad are being shown.

That's absolutely spot on. My guess is that we won't be able to see the real Paul Ince team until next year.

I don't fully agree with that. Whilst a full reflection is based on the players a manager brings in, their team if you like, a lot can be learnt about a manager by how they cope and do with the team they inherit, and how they mould players into playing their style of play. After all few managers, especially at rovers, will be able to buy a whole team that fits with their ethos, and examples such as Hughes keeping us up with Dickov and Stead as our strikers showed a lot about his managerial quality. I don't think Ince can get off scott free from how he does at the moment at all. Or by the same logic he shouldn't get any praise.

Unfortunately I think the type of players that PI would like will cost the earth. I feel we may have to wait for players like Treacy to fulfill their early promise.

I do wonder whether Warnock will get an extended role in midfield - a midfield three of Grella, Emo and Warnock has far more mobility and pace than we have had for a long time. What we need to compliment that is some genuine pace on one the wings or up front.

Interesting formation for me would be :-

Emo Grella Warnock

Carlos

Santa ?

? could be Derbs or McCarthy - but for me would ideally be a recognised striker with genuine pace.

Although Ince put Warnock into the middle due to squad depletion for the Everton Cup game, he's left him there and kept with MO @ left back. He's also played Treacy at left back over a few games.

Just wondering now what his main reason is just now - is MO keeping Warnock out of the left back spot, and Ince wants to keep Warnock in side (hence CM position), or is it the other way round?

Warnock will be playing wide left midfield next - which is ironic given that's where MO played most of last season. Perhaps it's to support Carlos more defensively?

Still, managers always say they want these kind of problems I guess.

flippant comment alert - Maybe PI just reads the tea leaves on his team selection??

Come on DingleBaiter, Warnock was losing a grip on his left back position being beaten many times then moaning or complaining deflecting crticism onto outher team members, Nelsen seemed to be too slow in covering Warnock during certain games aswell. Ince shifted him further up the pitch to patch weaknesses up in another area as a stop gap measure its worked reasonably well but it is only short term.

Is that not the sign of a good manager? That he utilised Warnock fully by exploiting his potential in central midfield and allowing a youth team player an opportunity too. Now Warnock shifted to left back may benefit him as I am sure his confidence is going to be high after playing well over the last few weeks.

The back 5 have also been very effective over the last few weeks having conceded 4 goals in 6 games, and losing only once in that time. that again is the sign of a good manager as Ince is rectifying the weaknesses in the early part of the season (Winterburn also looks an astute signing).

To conclude I agree with you JAL that a lot of what has happened is short term, I expect a star signing (or two) in January, decent cup run and a top 10 finish- over to you PI ;)

JAL - so you think it's more to get MO a start, and Warnock is the makeweight, rather than just a case of playing him there due to injuries and then deciding to keep 'as is'? Interesting idea.

As you say, it's only a stopgap; what happens when Judgey/Dunny are back fit for instance?

i wasn't at the game... how did warnock and grella actually get on? if this has been covered already can somebody furnish me with a link please?! Ta!

Grella played well and will no doubt make one of the midfield positions his own. Warnock adds a lot of energy and aggression to the midfield as well, although he's not the best playmaker around.

To say they're as good as any midfield pairing in the Prem is going a tad overboard though :)

indeed... we need tugay's brain on warnock's legs then basically!?! well maybe not literally, that would be just plain wierd!!!!!!

There's nothing wrong with what den said.

Grella played well on Saturday and given it was only his 2nd appearance and he'd just come back from injury it looks like he could be a good player for us (hopefully alongside Dunn in the longterm). Warnock has been a revelation in the central midfield recently and has rightly earned plaudits for his displays.

Even still, to suggest that there's no combination of 2 central midfielders better than Grella & Warnock in the premiership is a bit of wishful thinking at least from Mathias. I was impressed with them both on Saturday, but wouldn't consider them to be our first choice pairing long term when everyone's fit, let alone be the best partnership in the league!

Can't blame Mathias for praising their performances, but it sounded abit OTT to me.

lets do a comparison then to see if dens comments can be justified.

Are any of the two players of the ilk of the following players.

gerrard

lampard

J cole

fabregas

arteta

sidwell

petrov

johnson

ireland

young

alonso

diarra

diaby

ronaldo

huddlestone

jenas

bentley

modric

nani

anderson

there are many many others to add to the list. And in comparing the two, NOT ONE of them fit the bill IMO that is, so I agree with Den on that count.

ok i agree that Mathias might be going a bit over the top, regarding Grella and Warnock, but what is making me angry is that some people on here not naming names DEN, just are not giving Ince and his staff a chance, which in the end is not helping anyone at the club. Give Ince till at least christmas FFS, and stop moaning like an old grumpy man. What has Ince actually done wrong anyway Den?
