[Archived] Winterburn's Defensive Duties

Agree Tris - but if there where problems you wouldn't be working from home as much.

This is something Rovers certainly have in defence

Also its a new job for him so you would think he is needed more which I think he most obviously is - I don't think yours is a new job and team is it?

Anyway I thought he was supposed to be doing coaching and not scouting?

Actually, Capt, he didn't start coaching us until before the last 2 matches.

Some might (very thinly) argue that he's doing a great job so far.

Surely, it is just the same as having a visiting professor at University.

They are usually the best.

The jury's out as far as I'm concerned.

This is not just the same, though, is it?

This is more like some chap who went to uni, did well, moved onto something else for 5 years and then decides to go back as a tutor, part-time with no notable, relevant experience?

It's a serious question I've asked before, what's special about Winterburns abilities? Does he have his coaching badges, - I assume he has? Simply being part of a great back four wont in itself make him a good coach, - would it?

No he definitely does not have them.

So being part of the best defence in recent history does not equate to relevant experience?

He has had Wenger and Graham as his managers at a time where they where one of the dominate forces in English football. You cannot tell me he has not learnt from them at all. He does not need to be full-time they will not spend all week concentrating on defending, it would be a waste of our limited funds. I also do not understand the he should be at games comment. The amount of influence that you can inflict from the sidelines is limited, the majority comes from the training ground. With such things as pro-zone and video from camera's he should have more than enough info to diagnosis the problems, and then structure the training accordingly.

Also people on here need to understand that coaching badges are far from the be all and end all. Experience and knowledge are the key components there is no way on earth that a few weeks with an assessor will teach you all you need to know about football. They are required but not even close to the knowledge you would gain from working under some of the best in the game.

Who would you rather have at your side a person with his pro-licence with no experience or a person who played under Ferguson for ten years?? I know who I would choose!

Relevant experience of being a tutor? No. None whatsoever, I believe. Do you know otherwise?

Yes, you can learn a lot from the likes of Wenger, Ferguson etc. They are not coaching down at Rovers, though. Can Winterburn impart his knowledge? Dunno. Neither do you. Is Winterburn rusty after his time away from the coaching ground? Dunno. Neither do you. Is he cut out for a coaching role, at all? Dunno. Neither do you.

I'm not saying he's rubbish or that he's good. I don't know. Neither do you.

Fingers crossed that he's bloody fantastic!

This post should also be applied to the Fowler, Andrews and Ince threads. We're all welcome to give opinions on which way we think these will go, citing examples we see as relevant. However, the fact is no one knows for sure yet - something that should be remembered by those desperate to find the positive in everything as much as by those who impart negativity.
