Why though - what's the point? Seriously.

What positive upshot is there in your life from hating Burnley or Burnley fans? Is your life better in any way at all because of your hatred for Burnley? I personally can't think of any.

When you meet someone and you find out they're a Burnley fan, does that immediately mean that you hate them? Do you feel the need to hate that person simply because they come from a particular town and so follow a particular football club, even if they are a perfectly decent person in every other respect?

I'll be coming up to 40 in a couple of years, I've been a Rovers fan all my life, I went to school in Blackburn and, the odd wander aside, have lived in or around Blackburn all that time. As a younger lad I used to have a dislike for all things Burnley. As I've got older though I've started to think more and more that what exactly is the point? As far as I can see it serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

Burnley and Blackburn are similar sized towns, with a fairly similar history; industrial greatness and then massive decline (with a large immigrant population). Both are incredibly proud and successful footballing towns for their size. We share the same hospitals, local paper and postcode amongst many other things. Our lads have fought and distinguished themselves together in the armed forces over many years (it was the East Lancashire regiment who bravely fought the rearguard action at Dunkirk to help prevent the Nazis reaching the evacuation on the beaches). Most importantly though the majority of lads I've met over the years from Burnley are just decent honest blokes - just the same as blokes from Blackburn - there's the odd nob-end of course but that's no different than Blackburn.

So what is the point in hating Burnley? What has Burnley done / does that makes you hate them? For me 40 years is certainly a long time to hate something for no apparent reason. I’m not bringing my lad up hating Burnley for no apparent reason either.

Or is all this just a flashback moment from Monroes, peaking on doves circa 1990

Anyway, I for one sincerely hope Burnley go up - although it has to be said not least for the tenner I put on it at 20/1 before the season kicked off!

Spot on,I totally agree.I know a lot of Dingles and get much more joy in having good banter with them rather than hating them for no good reason.I have just spent the weekend in Blackpool with about 18 Burnley fans on a stag do.I was the only non-Dingle fan in the party and yet we had such a good crack.Walking from bar to bar on saturday one of the lads said to me "hey there`s another claret over there" in an attempt to goad me,without missing a beat I said "is he selling the big issue?" and they just cracked off laughing. The majority of them i didn`t know before weekend and i don`t think they knew what to make of me at first, but by Sunday we all got on like an house on fire.

I personally hope they go up,after all next season we will have 6 points in the bag,a local away game and 2 games where you know the atmosphere will be brilliant!

Bring `em on!

Cracking post Jonno, best of luck with the bet!

Coming from just over the border in Todmorden, I never got into the anti blackburn thing as a child, in fact the kids were split between Clarets and Manure fans so I tend to find them more disstastefull.

Maybe you do have to be from one of the towns to really get the bad feelings.

I can't believe that anybody seriously hates a rival football club (Celtic/Rangers come close but only because of religion) and I would have to say that anyone who does really needs some help with their head.

Got to agree with the majority of that Johnno. It's a game for God's sake. 11 daft lads against another 11 daft lads. All of them wearing the shirt because we're paying them to wear it. I wish they felt like we do but 99% of them don't.

And theres some and there is SOME.

Being a long standing Rover over 38yrs I am in the Abbey camp. I cant stand anything linked to Burnley FC.

There is always (when it comes around) a special hatred feeling when a Rovers v Burnley fixture comes about. Its bigger than anything else. Its worse then City/manure, its worse than any everton/liverpoo or celtic/rangers game. Its ROVERS v Burnely.

there is nothing as special in footballing terms.

I loathe anything to do with them, they are trolls, six fingered thugs, inbreds and so on. It is the way it is, its passed down through the long line of Rovers fans in my family, whatever you do in life son, always loathe anything in claret and blue.

from Bob lord to Jimmy Mullen, from Kindon to leighton james and so on. I despise them, I loathe them.

hate is a strong word that I tend not to use (often) but things in claret and blue come closest to me using that word in a sentence containg the burnley word :brfcsmilie::brfcsmilie:

So you are over 38 years old, do you not feel really childish when you write something like that?

Just watched the Newcy Boro game alongside Sheff U v PNE.

The north east sides are rubbish PL teams but boy is there a gulf in class down to what was happening at Bramall Lane.

Dingles v Reading was a tad better than the other SF but not much.

Whoever wins the play-off this year is in for an enormous struggle to get to 30 points next season.

I dislike Burnley and want them to fail badly but I'm no 'hater'.I work in Burnley and NO clarrott I know ever wants Rovers to be a success on any front,so that is naturally reciprocated in no uncertain terms...they have been in constant hurt for over 30 years!

I have to say I think a lot of the animosity towards Burnley stems from the infamous 'EWOOD 83' game...many of their so-called fans still seem to consider the events that unfolded as some sort of badge of honour..

.

THE LEGEND OF EWOOD '83(for the post Walker Roverites).......

The game was held up for quite some time as one or two Burnley fans climbed onto the old Darwen End roof and proceeded to rip off and throw panelling onto the pitch and onto their own supporters below. This resulted in their manager taking to the field and addressing them as 'ANIMALS'.The trouble didn't last long though as the boys in blue waded in with truncheons and not so nice doggies.Quite a bit of retribution was meeted out to the Burnley idiots at Mill Hill station.......they went home defeated on all fronts :D (nothing new there then!)

So, just so we are clear. It is Rovers fans who are thugs and go around beating up other supporters, not Burnley fans?

Thanks for clearing that up for me SG - I still remember being chased as a child by a gang of Rovers supporting 'men' with a view to them giving me a good kicking so I have always suspected that was the case.

Despite having small crowds the difference is weight of numbers in the nobhead stakes. Your %age nobheads per decent supporter must be in second place nationally just behind Millwall.

There are exceptions to this 'hatred' rule, but it's only really understood by people who've grown up in these towns and went to football before Sky turned up.

It is nonsensical, ridiculous and stupid but I'm too far gone now. Anyway, I quite enjoy it.

Don't believe 'em, don't believe 'em, cos it's all a pack of lies

If it weren't for B***ard Rovers this would be a paradise.

Come on Burnley!!
