I know Big Sam gets a lot of negative press for his long ball strategy but it occured to me while watching Newcastle v. Pompey how impotent both teams were at set pieces and i thought that with Rovers now they have become quite threatening from set plays which is unusual from a Rovers side.

I never thought I would get excited from a throw in! Pedersen flings them in at pace and you expect something to happen. The same at corners and free kicks.

It may not be the purist`s football but it has made us very dangerous. I must be coming round to Sam`s tactics at last!!

We don't really look threatening form set pieces yet. We scored two goals on Sunday from set pieces, but in Allardyce's time here I've hardly seen any improvement. I'd still say we are one of the least threatening sides from attacking set pieces and one of the worst sides at defending set pieces.

Are those the only two options?

Well if you want more options we need money. That is something we don't have!

We are capable of playing decent stuff, we saw glimpses of that VS Wigan and scored a few decent goals VS Newcastle and Hull. We know it's capable of happening, it just depends on who we bring in at the end of the season. Whoever reckons Sam isn't the best manager for a club like Rovers is mad.

Name me an alternative if you can?

i personally cant wait for next season now..

under sam allardyce we have improved soo much and if he was here right from the beginning of the season we wouldnt even be in this position..

we actually look an organised team since he has come in rather then the shambles that was under paul ince..

there is plenty of changes needed in the team-, a right back, right winger, central midfielder , two strikers, and left wing could do with a bit of competition-but sam allardyce is brilliant in the transfer market, and has shown at bolton he can also do well with limited funds..

i think its onwards and upwards for us next season-and in sam allardyce he is definatly the right man for us...

Is there any good young right backs out there that we might attempt a loan deal on? Someone like that kid Rafael would be awesome.

Emmanuel Eboue would be worth a punt. Don't know if he would come or not. However, Arsenal fans have fallen out with him several times, he is a natural RB, but that spot is taken by Bacary Sagna, and he no longer plays right midfield as they have Arshavin, Walcott and Nasri who can play there.

Doubt it will happen though. But for around £3million would be a good signing IMO.

Right--------we won 2-0, both goals came from set pieces but you haven't seen any improvement! You really are ridiculous and totally biased.

The set pieces is obviously going to be a big part of our play from next season onwards as Sam has already mentioned in his Q&A session that if you are the best attacking wise at set pieces and the best defending wise then you are then gauranteed a top 10 finish.

Look at the points tally - we'd be 8th under Allardyce. It's not the manner of play it's the results for us -especially this season. We have played good football - Sunderland and City and not got what we deserved in a points sense. I also think we've re-developed the same attidute we had under Souness and Hughes. We might not beat you but it's going to hurt like hell in the morning. And I for one enjoy watching that regardless of the Waggys of this world.

We can't affort £10m players any more and the academy has all but failed as a supply line for Premiership players. Take what we've got and enjoy being an underfunded small town team that the big clubs look for on the fixture list and think 'oh no, glad when thats over.'

If you want an analogy look at Alan Hansen's biography. As the finest Centre Half I've ever seen who did he look for on the fixture list? Arsenal, Utd? Inter? No, Oxford Utd. Why - because they had Centre Forward called Billy Whitehurst who scared the pants off him. That's what we've been for a number of year - the small team no one wanted to play. Enjoy!

Guess this sort of put's an end to recent speculation in the Sunday press, with regard Sam as our manager which ever league we play in next season.

Sam's a staying

Thats what he confirmed to the audience at Ewood a few weeks ago. The only thing at this point is that the board have not confirmed it as far as I am aware. I'm sure they'll want him to continue too, albeit on reduced remuneration......... and that'll be the issue imo.

Sam was appointed when we were 6 points adrift of safety.

I appreciate that some people in those circumstances might not have thought "what happens if we go down/stay up?" but I am pretty sure Sam and John Williams did and wrote appropriate clauses and numbers covering either event. It is a 30 month long contract remember.

Personally, Sam has to be credited with our survival.

he shook the club clear of Ince's abomination and turned the 6 point deficit into a 6 point credit.

Granted, the points total should be more but we cannot really complain.

The team responded to his methods and plans and now we are almost home and dry, all that matters is trying to achieve a higher slot in the league for the placement money.

Rovers are undergoing phase II of the Big Sam revoloution. I am certain that we will see a change like we havent seen at Ewood.

As for the set piece scenarios, it has been years since we saw Rovers score goals from corners and free kicks on a regular basis. If he improves our quality at set peices then Rovers can only benefit. We have also seen at times, that we can play football and its not always hoof it at em football.

when was the last time we had a positive goal difference, like what season? just out of curiousity because all i can remember is having a negative or slight slight positive goal difference come an end to a season.

i really want to see a day where rovers has a goal difference of somewhere around +12... hopefully sam can bring that to us next season.

West Brom is obviously in comparison with Derby so presumably Hull and Stoke are compared with Brum and Reading.

The fact the bottom is doing much better than last year and there is a general improvement amongst last season's strugglers means that the number of points for getting into the top ten is going to be way lower this season.

The Rovers -16 really reflects the Ince tenure. 17 Ince games yielded 13 points, 17 Sam games 24 points so 11 of that 16 is immediately explained.

If we had gathered 24 points from both sets of 17 games, we woud be comfortably in 7th and the box seat for European qualification WITH THE SQUAD WE HAVE NOW.

Conversely, two sets of 17 games under Ince would have seen us on 26 points and looking up at WBA and everyone else in the League with the prospect of relegation becoming a mathematical certainty today.

Waggy and the paulette ince crew take note of the basic mathematics highlighted in the previous post.

Ince at the helm was guaranteed RELEGATION.

thats how good he was.

I wonder what reaction we might get from one Mr Holt if those stats were highlighted to him ?
