I wonder what the description of Beckhams brilliant crossfield passes for England would be??

Long ball?? theoratically it is a long ball, but a bloody good long ball!!

Reminded me of Waggy hitting Gordon Taylors feet from 40 yards, week after week, what a left foot Waggy had!!

Jim Iley's reign?

True- the only games I saw under Iley were when Dave Gregory was on loan and we did pretty well in those. It was the mistake of not signing Gregory that seemed to lead to the club falling apart in the rest of those 44 days (I think that is how long Iley lasted- was the late Derek Keighley the Chairman at that time?).

The rest of that season under Pickering we were hapless rather than utterly dire to watch. In fact after McKenzie signed we were great to watch despite being relegated.

You've got to understand how the Premier League works. Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal "get the ball up to the strikers quickly". To achieve this they hit "direct, pinpoint, defence splitting 60 yard precision passes". Don't forget "exquisite" and "sublime" either.

Bolton Wanderers, Stoke City, Hull City et al play "ugly, in your face, brutal, long-ball". Now that Satan's Son is your manager you play long ball football - and you were already a bunch of thugs, according to the media.

You see, none of us deserve to be in the PL at the expense of "big" clubs anyway.

Get with the project!

Sorry, it's my personal rant that comes out for an airing every now and then.

I said my piece about Allardyce when you were all agonising over appointing him as your new boss. He did an awesome job at Bolton on limited funds. He then went past his sell-by date. Everybody's got one. He was very badly treated at Newcastle. He would have kept them up and he would have cleaned out the stable, given support. Best man for that job - but that will never dawn on the barcodes. Clinically stupid, all of them.

I said that he was your best option, by far, of the limited options you had. I said he would keep you up, and he did that (and more besides). He's a bloody good manager. But if you want "beautiful football" he's not the kiddy. As you haven't had that for nearly fifty years I wonder why so many of you long for it. (Your PL winning side were worthy winners, but they didn't win it by playing "beautiful football". Why should they anyway?")

Oh, and Sam would stab his granny for a fiver. But you knew that anyway.

We wont ever be an Arsenal but even as recently as the Souness and Hodgson tenures we played some lovely stuff. Also under Hughes at times.

Souness jumped before he was shot and you sacked Hodgson, if my memory serves me right.

I can't remember how the Hodgson reign ended, but I'm sure that you were relegation bound under Old Whirling Eyes at the end.

Maybe so but there is only us and Fulham who can lay claim to have played the beautiful game under a Liberace look-alike manager who used words like "pedagogy" with a Southern lower middle class lisp.

He'd get sacked for using words like that up here.

He would get burned at the stake in the North East for "pedagogy". Far too close to "paedophile" canny lad!

:D

Anyone else concerned by Sam's Sky interview?

Apart from the pyjamas (nicko's description), the man looked absolutely shattered, de-motivated and scarcely awake.

Just like he'd come back from holiday in fact...

Interesting when Nicko said, he wondered what the mood in the camp would be if the Di Santo move fell through. Wanted to ask nicko to expand on that obviously hes closer to the manager than alot of others.

I think there is a lot of tension about at the moment over transfers...and you could see that in his face.

From what I hear there is total confusion about who to go for if the Kevin Davies thing does not happen...some names I dare not print.

Rovers have 'counted' on Di Santo coming because Chelsea have been nice about it so far, but if that collapsed it would be some job to land two new faces in the current market.

It is unusual for the club to put a manager up at this stage of the summer which also tells me there is an attempt to get the dreaded Davies name out of Rovers minds...although I note at least one paper refers to him as being the first player the club went for.

It is also unusual for Sam to 'volunteer' a name like he did with Ruud. I don't know if he was asked about him or gave it out himself. Either way it is odd.

Van Nistelrooy has been available for a month. In fact the agent working on it is a good pal of Sam's. So why go public on it? Very strange.

Given Sam has a strong link to his agent could he then not use that relationship to pass this story without fear of a no-chance statement from him?? Davies went down like a kick in the nether regions for most Rovers fans, this deflects attention away from that Idea???

You must have a theory on it Nicko, feel free to PM it to me.

It shouldn't be about news management at this stage of the season, but I'm afraid it looks like it is.

The bottom line is you are no nearer to finding the replacement for Roque. That is all that really matters.

Probably knows he won't be able to get him but, just like Spurs, wants to make the fans believe that it is possible and to give the impression that he is at least trying to bring in big names.

I don't think he is duping anyone, I am just not sure how strong the interest is. As of yesterday afternoon - following the presser - there was NO striker lined up and a growing amount of concern.

I find this odd, not the way Sam works at all and I wonder if this is a bit of a set up somewhere??

ie: Sam already has contactedand got a preliminary, 'I would be interested' statement via an agent, then says its going to be very difficult and if the capture comes about, Sam is a genius!!!

Its happened before!

Real want rid - it would be cheap in terms of a fee. Ruud has one year left at #120,000-a-year [#6 million plus].

So you could probably get him cheap but need to offer him two or three years and give him around #10 million over that period which is either #100,000-a-week or #65,000-a-week.

John Williams will be having heart attacks at the thought.

The impression I get is that Sam is already frustrated with the lack of cash/resources available (whilst probably appreciative that we are giving him what money we have).

When he first came in at Rovers he had energy about him and generally seemed more positive. He had been out of the game for a while and initally loved the fact he was back in management. Just my view, but as I have stated before, I don't think there is much longevity with Sam as our manager. Hope I am wrong.

Just imagine if we had not been able to sell Roque, we would have had barely any money at all for new players!

Sam's No1 target blown out of the water.

Di Santos still up in the air, may never come down.

Plan Sell two strikers and not a clue/confusion who to bring in. :( hardly inspiring.

I,m not surprised there is a war brewing.

Finance's rule BRFC, welcome to Ewood Sam. (as they should of course)

My feelings too John. The thing is though I'm sure he will have been made more than aware of our financial situation when he joined the club.

Things are building up for an interesting summer.

I get the impression Allardyce thinks he hasn't been made fully aware of the ridiculous amount of funds he would have to work with. I also get the impression he's non too pleased about that.
