[Archived] Sam Allardyce

For me, this signing of Salgado will make or break Allardyce at our club.

Only results will ever do that Tris.

Also you said...... "Tugay was desperate to stay at Rovers for one more season. Without question, so were the fans. It was the same behind the scenes - he was massively popular in the dressing room, and with all the staff at Ewood and Brockhall. Only one person wanted this popular bloke out of the way, and reluctantly, John Williams backed his new manager and Tugay went."

Now I have some sympathy with this and I too think that Tugay would still have something to offer for this coming season, also I was rather hoping that SA or to use your term 'the fat slug' would be able to acccomodate the most skilled player that I have EVER seen in blue and white halves in some way or other. BUT John Williams backed his manager because John Williams told his manager to cut wages, and wasting big wages on a bit part player destined to make a few cameo appearences becomes a huge NO NO!

I think you have mistaken where exactly the buck stops in making that point. Your complaints might be nearer to the mark if they were directed primarily at John Williams.

Dunn, Reid and Grella are our only 3 natural central midfielders, and all 3 have an injury record that proves that we cannot expect them to last long periods of time uninjured. This stop-and-go process means a handful of good games a season. Not to mention that Grella hasn't even shown much quality when he was fit and running anyway.

Basically put, the #1 transfer priority has failed to be addressed yet again.

Maybe if you wrote to those three asking them to rip up their contracts and bgugger off so that we could put the vast amount of money that they are consuming weekly to better use on fit and proper midfielders they might just do that ..................

..........Just don't hold your breath MrE.

 bloody hell i do not believe it,i heard the manager CALL US BLACKBURN ROVERS,he has gone up 100% in my estimation just lower than whale ###### now :P

Very good waggy. I'm sure the U12's who read this board will find that very funny.

So why are we now wasting wages on three highly paid right backs? Tugay could easily have been paid out of that kitty.

People are forgetting the order that events have taken place here.

Firstly, it's inconceivable that BFS didn't start the close season without having had a discussion with Williams on cash available for both signings and wages. It's also inconceivable that the agreed figures have been changed during the summer. People's expectations and frustrations have changed because the manager has chosen to spend the cash in areas other than midfield.

Don't forget Ghilas was at Brockhall for several days, and his agent even said he was a Rovers player ... before our manager got wind of Kalinic and sent the #2 million player away in order to sign a #6 million player.

Allardyce can do maths - if he thought he needed to sign a midfield player he could have saved 4 million quid for one by signing the Algerian striker - who he clearly rates otherwise he wouldn't have been at Brockhall in the first place - instead of the Croatian.

Salgado is Allardyce's marquee signing, the big name, and it obviously stretched the budget to make it happen. Again, if he thought midfield was more important, he could have left Salgado well alone. The Warnock sale was maybe even caused by Salgado's arrival - we will never know - but either way it's Allardyce's call not John Williams' call, as is the decision to bring in Chimbonda, again at the apparent expense of a midfielder.

Back to your original point about Tugay - his wage could easily have been fitted in. I know for a fact that Givet is on a substantial (and surprising) wage. I doubt Chimbonda has taken a cut coming from moneybags Spurs, and I doubt Salgado is playing for a pittance either. Jacobson is almost ancient history in all of this, but Everton don't pay peanuts.

The long and short is that Allardyce has chosen where to spend his loot - both transfer and wages - and a midfielder was never a priority. He's had all summer and to find one, and a perfectly adequate budget to pay one - but has chosen not to.

Maybe he'll buy one on Monday in the end of window sales.

Whilst I rate Sam as a decent manager, some people appear to think he is immune from criticism.

In my view, he has panicked at points during this transfer window and had no real strategy (certainly with regards to the wage bill). Of course it is difficult with a limited budget but he spoke as if he was panicking and in the end we have a lopsided squad.

Whilst he has a good track record in the market, particularly at Bolton, he probably has not intelligently used the budget well here.

Ultimately, our results on the pitch are all that matters, however we can still observe the manager's transfer dealings. They just seem a bit odd to me.

1. How do you know that and what is it?

and

2. How much was Tugays agent demanding?

btw imo despite a great spell in March/April by Tugay SA did not rate his ability to contribute much to the future cause. Makes me speculate that there might have been a difference of opinions at work between the two. Just as Ince couldn't wait to kick fans favourite Brad out I think SA wanted fans favourite Tugay out too. I did hear him say that he rated Djorkaeff higher too.

I think the old adage for football managers to 'get bad (unruly in this case) players out or they will get rid of you' might have come into play here. And also with Warnock btw.

As I said...... just speculating.

Sam has won the benefit of the doubt after saving our asses from relegation.

For example, many people are scrutinizing the additions of Chimbonda & Salgado, despite neither of them kicking a ball for the first-team. Until we *SEE* where they slot into the side, we can't criticize Sam's plans.

Sam top wheeler and dealer - Nicko

Looks comfortable with the whole situation if you ask me..............

Allardyce: "I am good at making profits, I've been making them wherever I have been - apart from Newcastle United.

"There has been a massive gain at every other place I have been. It's the same here this summer. I can't say I like it, but it's a necessity for the club. And I am capable of dealing with it.

Nicko wasn't going to bother with Rovers today ...

Officially business is over...so taking a keen interest on other clubs making moves.

... so clearly the rest of the world is dead.

As for Allardyce, it's poor to read. Talk about getting the excuses in early. It's all ME ME ME. It should be US US US. He's paid far better than several senior players (almost unique in the PL) - he should be getting on with the job rather than brushing his image up in the papers.

Allardyce boasted: "I am good at making profits, I've been making them wherever I have been - apart from Newcastle United.

I thought the articles in both the Mirror and LT were a fairly accurate statement of fact. Clearly, the financial structure of the club has taken priority this summer and Sam has merely stated the fact that, in his view, the manager is responsible for helping to run the club as a whole and not just the team on the pitch.

The aim of the club surely remains the same - retain Premier League status. In the present financial climate anything beyond that is a bonus. Clearly, both Sam and John Williams believe that the deals that have been done this summer will enable the Rovers to achieve that objective while putting the club on a sounder financial footing. I don't believe that reflecting on the fact that players are sold to make profits and new players have to be bought for smaller fees is making excuses. If that was the case then every manager from Jack Marshall to Don Mackay had to do the same. To a certain extent, Ray Harford, Roy Hodgson, Graeme Souness and Mark Hughes also had to sell players they would rather have kept.

While Sam's transfer policy may be difficult for some to understand, and I admit that I'm not sure where certain players are going to fit, the only person who needs to follow it is the manager. He clearly has tactical ideas in mind about how he wants the team to play and he has bought players who he believes will be able to operate those plans. That seems a perfectly normal way for a manager to behave. How many other managers come out and explain their tactical thinking to the media and explain in detail how each player is going to be used? To expect Sam, or any other manager to do that is not realistic.

I regarded Tugay as technically the best player I had seen at Ewood Park since Bryan Douglas. However, at 38 he was clearly coming to the end of his career. I would have loved to have seen him at Ewood Park for another year but as it was he went out on a high. If might well have found another season a step too far and struggled. However, at the end of the day it had to be the manager's choice.

Sam's style of management was always going to be different from Mark Hughes. However, at the end of the day if he keeps us in the Premier League then I, for one, will be happy to judge him as a success. If, however, we are relegated then the strategy won't have worked and no doubt Sam will pay the usual managerial price. Ultimately, all manager's live and die by the decisions they make and Sam will be no different.
