Me picking holes in Hughesy's argument has nothing to do with my views on Sam. I'm sure him and Hughesy are thoroughly nice people, we just have different views on things. Isn't that the point of this board?

I will however try to back up my views with rationale, so please don't try to pigeon-hole me one way or another.

Thank you.

OK, sure, if you say so ;)

I'm trying to say it how I see it. Unfortunately I think some people seem to think that due to him saving us from relegation last season, it makes him above question this season. Of course I'm grateful that he managed to keep us up, no matter how or in what style he did it.

So while I'm ecstatic that we beat the Dingles, I don't care whether you give two sh!ts, I'll continue to question if I think he needs questioning.

And I'll only pick holes, if there are holes to be picked.

Not so----you'll pick holes where there aren't any. You can't help yourself.Anyway I asume we'll lose against Chelsea so presumably you and others will have plenty to say.

Only just seen that from dulwich Aggy- unbelievable!!!

Incidentally, who is dulwich?- is he/she an irritating old poster recycled under a new name.

Sam does drop clangers and not slaughtering the dingles second half after playing it cool for about 20 minutes is one of them. Coming with a Notlob background and not having the most engaging choice of words sometimes doesn't help; particularly if he believes some of the worst ones. However, he does have a double misfortune:

- Hughes who got 95%+ of his judgements right is still fresh in our minds so Sam gets kicked when he only gets perhaps 85% right.

- Ince managed to get 5% right, if that much, so the fans have got into an irritable impatient mood with a strong manager-kicking reflex.

FFS, it was used as a rhetorical indication showing that I was optimistic, not that I was only half satisfied.

Your right, we all wanted the bigger goal margin and we should really have had it but lets be happy with what we've got.

I'd have taken any sort of a win before the start.

The manner of it leaves us in front of them in terms of ability. We were better than 1 goal in front of them. If Dunny had not held onto the ball too long we should have had another.

Sam places a high level on professionalism and as he said if Burnley didn't score in the second half they couldn't win, so he set his stall out to do just that and hope that we got chances through them committing forward. Sometimes those tactice don't work but usually they do.

The City game is a stupid comparison. SA had been with us for two weeks and nobody on earth could have predicted the individual and unprofessional errors committed by Ooijer and Derbyshire that caused us to surrender 2 points in 2 minutes. Bolton used to shut up shop when in winning positions through sheer professional spoiling tactics like feigning injury, taking the ball to the corner flag, swopping throwers for throw ins and kickers for free kicks etc etc. I expect he'll be schooling our lot to do likewise.

Oh!.... And before anybody queues up to find wrong in this sort of poor sportsmanship then just rem first how funny we found Tugays long walks. :rover:

Exactly Theno. Im sure if we went 1-0 up on saturday and then just defended until the end, but held on for a 1-0, then many fans would be delighted.

Tugay used to take the ultimate p!ss with his long walks from the riverside.

Also like theno said - The tactics worked and we should of scored more....despite just sitting on the lead, we still had other chances to make it 4 or 5. Just our players didnt capitalise on those chances.

Me too and they were funny (as long as you were a Rover).

The Burnley game was the watershed for me or more correctly the acid test. And as we are so adamant on pro- or anti- I'll make it simple. Had he failed on Sunday then I would be anti- but because he succeeded am I am pro-. Descion made and That will pretty much be my stance (until we play for a draw at the Turd :P ).

Exactly right. But I wait for the "pro-Allardyce" posters on here to spout "well it was Chelsea". I don't care! We need to at least give it a go. This is embarrassing.

oh so today is better than wigan away last season? how? rewite history?

Not better but different completely. A. Wigan weren't very good, Chelsea are. B. We've won our last 3 at home, Ince had lost 10 games on the bounce home and away iirc. Getting beaten 6-2 and 5-0 by Arsenal and Chelsea is horrible but it's not as bad as getting beaten by Wigan in the first 20 minutes of a game 3-0 after being promised a better team performance and getting nothing. At least we know we'll win at home this season and maybe win away but with Ince we didn't know when our next goal was coming from let alone a point.

Against Wigan last season, it was the final straw after some terrible defeats. We capitulated in 10 minutes against a team of equals.

Today, we held out for nearly 20 minutes before a mistake opened the floodgates, away, at a Champion's League contender.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making excuses for today. It was appalling. But it wasn't as bad as Wigan away last year - that was one of the lowest points in recent history for BRFC.

It's not even as bad as when Coventry beat us 5-0 (or was it 6?) all those years ago.

We need to play 4-4-2 against United. Otherwise we might as well not turn up. Having said that I still think Sam is targeting matches to keep us in the division.

Until we get a decent backer, we will get more of the same. And I don't think Strachan would do any better - maybe an initial bump like most new managers get (even Ince) but after that back to this...

He's quite obviously written off games against the top teams. Poss quite rightly too. Lets face it we haven't a hope of winning these matches... the Champions League has seen to that. Maybe the best way forward is to save our best players for the games in our personal league, win them and both club and supporters can treat matches against the world superstars as a practice match. Best way forward is for all fans to avoid all away trips to the top clubs.

That's an interesting slant on it.

Anyone know if there are any footy sights where you can view the league table - minus all of the results teams have had against the top 4? (Although in our case, it could be minus the top 14! )

Probably very close to the truth. But the trouble is when does this stop? If City haven't joined that elite they soon will. So when do we write off those 6 points. Sunderland are heading that way. As are Spurs. Do we forget those 12 too? Birmingham look like they might have some to spend too. So in couple of seasons we can forget about turning up for those matches too. If this approach is taken then we are accepting our fate and aiming to simply die of Chinese water torture. Drip by drip, fixture by fixture we head towards our 'natural' low league level. ###### to that. Why do we have to roll over against the so called big 4? Villa were considered to have the potential in all respects to crack the top 4 last season. This year we turned them over! Chelsea are not that far ahead of Villa. They're miles ahead of us. But not that far from Villa. Why is it we are to accept we may get something from Villa but not Chelsea, Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool? The fact is we shouldn't accept it. If we are 'conserving' energy for games in our own mini league then we're doomed to fail. Because year on year that mini league is decreasing. Soon we'll get relegated finishing 18th but told to be happy we won our mini league.
