John Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Heard BFS talk fondly of Sunderland in the past. Didn't he play for the Mackems at some stage. Think he played there briefly in the past, not sure though.

Zulu Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 Think he played there briefly in the past, not sure though. 25 games in 1980/81 season after leaving Bolton.
RevidgeBlue Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 According to this morning's Sun, Allardyce is very interested in the Sunderland job. Plan C was again.............??
Bobby G Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Guardian has mentioned a statement issued by Allardyce last night stating that he would love to take over the great club that is Sunderland and has the utmost respect for the job done by their chairman Niall Quinn... But it seems the papers are reporting Brown is their first choice and there is interest in Strachan, Advocaat, Wally with a Brolly, and even Curbishley...Strachan would be a coup for them I believe...

Big Sam would be a real coupe for us IF we could get him!
vintageadidas Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Why would you he take the Rovers job over the Sunderland one? They have more money, larger support and greater potential. We are screwed!

I think Strachan would be a great coup for them. Then Celtic could get a manager that can recognise a good player from a long dring of water who is distinguished only because he has the longest name in football. Win win (Sunderland flounder, BFS stays available and Celtic get a new manager)
T4E Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Strachan will likely be linked to just about every Prem job that comes up in the coming months until he leaves Septic. Including ours.
Jan Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Strachan will likely be linked to just about every Prem job that comes up in the coming months until he leaves Septic. Including ours. If it wasn't for the fact that the players he buys are right out of the school of "what the f***?!?!?!" he's tactically not a bad manager, although I don't think I could stand watching Vennegoor of Hesselink dolloping around Ewood as well.
gillibrand Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 We didn't get who we wanted in the summer, and we probably won't when Ince goes. We'll end up with Curbishley, or JW will bring McClaren over from Holland. Why would Mc Claran want to come over from Holland, he is doing well at FC Twente, I don't think he would relish "working up north we nowt to spend"
thenodrog Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 This situation is worsening daily. If we had acted earlier as we should we could have got Allardyce on our terms whilst his credit was low. Now if the Sland interest is genuine and we are entering a bidding war then our negotiating position is that much weaker and we will have to aquiesce to his termsor back off. Not good.
SamTheShrew Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 alladyce has already openly stated he wants to talk to sunderland. skysports = "I'm your man"
joey_big_nose Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Hmm. Interesting choice for Allardyce if we do offer him the job as well as Sunderland. For me I think it will come down to money - both in terms of his salary and the funds available for transfers. I think Sunderland may have blown their load in the last two seasons. If there is little to spend it may be an unattractive proposition. Rovers should (I still can't quite believe they don't, but I guess we could be financially screwed) have 10-15m to spend Other relevant factors are that we are close to where Sam lives. On the other hand he may have the hump with us (he does seem like the type who would bear a grudge) plus Sunderland have a team that could very effectively adapt to BFS's tactics: Jones' frankly awesome aerial prowess alongside Diouf's and Richardson's trickery down the flanks and Cisse's pace suit the vaunted Bolton 433 very well. We can't offer Sam that instant flexibility to his will. If we can't get him i don't know what plan C is. Although Ince is floundering i can't see any names i would be confident would necessarily do much better, and there would be a chance we could do worse. Obviously we need a change but it looks like a massive gamble at the moment. Worrying times.

How can we take part in a bidding war when we cant bid? If Sunderland want Allardyce they'll get him. He apparently has made it clear he wants the job knowing it is likely that the Rovers gig will be available soon. Dont expect to see Allardyce and his army of coaches at Ewood any time soon.
joey_big_nose Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 How could be do worse, do you mean drop one more place in the league? Thats looking at it too narrowly. The question is could we get in a manager who is less likely to keep us in the Premiership over the course of the rest of the season than Paul Ince? The answer to that is very definately yes. There are a lot of worse managers out there. We need to find someone who is decent, who can make a short and long term impact. Reaching out to anyone just because "we can't do any worse" is ridiculous, and hopefully not a maxim that JW is following. To be a success in the premiership is very very difficult so we need to exercise extreme care. Ince has his qualities as well as a whole host of weaknesses. But there are much much worse. We need to find someone with quality.

Why quote Sams army of coaches, does de Guv'nr not have a army of coaches, the difference being they are no good!
mattyboy6000 Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 can have 10,000 coaches if you like. 500 to each player. no use if the manager can't manage, though
graham W Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 With BFS now favourite for the Mackem job this nightmare could be about to take a turn for the worse. A revitalised Sunderland playing committed, in your face football, pull away from the relegation zone after a Boxing Day win over limp wristed Blackburn Rovers. Santa Cruz finalises his New Year's Day move to City. I just hope that John Williams has tapped up Sam Allardyce already. He must have by now mustn't he? Rover's board would be in a better position if JW hadnt ignored Sam's application last time around - to the point where he withdrew it - and then appointed Ince - highly likely BFS will now tell JW to shove his job where the sun don't shine [and I wouldnt blame him really)
Bobby G Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 We all know that he would choose the Mackems over us BUT if he is overlooked for that job, you can be certain he would take our offer IF we do offer it.
waggy Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 i think bfs is more off a man than that, why would he go to a club whose fans did not want him 6 months ago?it's not like he has only a couple off hundred left in the bank!!!!!!!!!!!!
