Eddie Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Even at Bolton it took Sam years to make them into a top half club. If it happens then it will be the same at Rovers. Do our fans have the patience to wait that long for that possibility under Sam? Totally different situations though. Allardyce took charge of a Bolton side that weren't even in the Premier League. This is a Rovers side that has finished in the top half regularly this decade and still has quite a lot of the important members of those teams. That isn't to say that we should be doing it this year, but there's little relation to the Bolton situation.

G Somerset Rover Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I like Fulham's 'deal' with Hodgson of a 12 month rolling contract. Pitty Allardyce isn't on one.

That isn't to say that we should be doing it this year, but there's little relation to the Bolton situation. They are not totally different situations if you actually look under the surface. Forgetting that he took Bolton up...later he was in a similar situation in that Bolton were a team just above the Prem relegation zone and he needed time to get them into the top half while spending little. As for "This is a Rovers side that has finished in the top half regularly this decade"...no, sorry, not true. The Rovers side that you are talking about featured the likes of Savage, Bentley, Friedel, Santa Cruz, Bellamy, Derbyshire, Neill, Tugay, Warnock etc at different times. It is simply no longer correct to say this is a top ten side. let's be honest...the majority of the players we have who were in the team then are only still here because they have been poor for at least good chunks of the time since or have been crocks. Pedersen, Roberts, Benni, Reid etc. So...not exactly totally different situations really are they? Both sides will take time to be rebuilt if we are to go places.
Stuart Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Well this is one way of doing it. But could it be counter-productive? (Both to the players and to their potential valuations). Sam names and shames the under-performers I guess he's saying what a lot of us are thinking but still no admission of his own part in it...

Sam names and shames the under-performers I guess he's saying what a lot of us are thinking but still no admission of his own part in it... So far this week he has blamed bad luck, not being able to afford Bent, and let down by the senior players. I'm surprised there was no mention of the ref, but not surprised there was no introspection on anything he might have done better
FourLaneBlue Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I would rather he didn't do this publicly. How often do the likes of Wenger and Ferguson do this?
Hughesy Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I would rather he didn't do this publicly. How often do the likes of Wenger and Ferguson do this? How often do they have 4 of their so called best players underperforming for half a season though.....We need a reaction and its the right thing to do!
S15 Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 Over the past few couple of years Chelsea and Arsenal have certainly had a number of their first team under performing, as have Liverpool this season.

Do our fans have the patience to wait that long for that possibility under Sam? Good post. But the answer is sadly "No". Too many on here were sharpening their knives before Sam had even taken over.
Backroom Tom Posted December 30, 2009 Backroom Posted December 30, 2009 I'm bored of this whole thing now so I'm just going to hope to be proved wrong in doubting the big man now, I think he has all the tools to turn it around but at present things aint good enough. Anything above 18th this season is now a success and another regrouping and building job can take place in summer

Sam names and shames the under-performers I guess he's saying what a lot of us are thinking but still no admission of his own part in it... The worst thing about that article is that you could easily substitute the name 'Sam Allardyce' for 'Paul Ince' and be forgiven for thinking we've gone back a year. I thought Sam was better than the desperation tactics that the latter resorted to.
mjs Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 How often do they have 4 of their so called best players underperforming for half a season though.....We need a reaction and its the right thing to do! It is never the right thing to do in public.
Gav Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Finally the manger comes out and says what we’ve all been thinking for a while, Diouf, Benni Big Mac, Roberts and , Pederson have been under performing. ******SHOCK HORROR****** I get the feeling we have dressing room unrest, and this is the reason for him slating them in the press, or maybe he’s just trying to manipulate the situation and drum up business for these players so he can wheel and deal in January. Lets hope the later is the case and the manager is pulling a master stroke here.

Sam also took Bolton down again and back up again, thus proving the virtues of patience versus knee-jerk!
tonyoz Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 That would be much fairer if Allardyce is allowed to net spend in the transfer market, by the same amount he was denied in the last two. You can't expect a manager to sell players, reduce the wage bill then improve the squad Shillito. What worries me is that I rarely (never?) hear Sam talking about lack of creativity (ie midfield) - he talks instead about the need to put the ball in the net. He said exactly the same stuff when he recruited Di Santo and Kalinic. He did have money then (admittedly limited) but he has not improved matters with his efforts. Maybe with more he would have bought Bent and got the best out of him....maybe! But I fear that Sam is not getting the best out of what we've got. I know that injuries have ruined continuity in midfield but he has chopped and changed the strike force in a bewildering fashion too. Let's hope for a more relaxed 2010. Happy new year everybody.
jw_ Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Interesting comment here from Sam on the Megson sacking. "Unfortunately for Gary, the fans wouldn't quite take to him - they didn't quite endear themselves to him and they always felt there was something they disagreed with, no matter what he seemed to do," he said. "I always think that's a very unfortunate situation because in the end, if your fans decide that they don't like you then you've got very little chance of keeping your job, no matter how good you are." Mmmmnnn

John Posted January 1, 2010 Posted January 1, 2010 Still the best man for us, January is massive though. Nervous about it myself.

ABBEY Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 EXPERTLY OUT OF THE FA CUP 1ST GO......"All you punters and supporters out there, leave it to me. I'm the expert, not you!"
Roost Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 Was it just the other day that Allardyce said he was the person to get the most out of EHD? Enough said.
Amo Posted January 2, 2010 Posted January 2, 2010 EXPERTLY OUT OF THE FA CUP 1ST GO......"All you punters and supporters out there, leave it to me. I'm the expert, not you!" The 'expert' jibes are wearing thin, Abbey...
