I like that tactic as well, I thought that's how we played against Villa in the second leg with Dunn in place of Hoilett? But I could be wrong. Either way, it could definitely work for our team. I like the idea of our left flank having someone more defensive in Givet, and someone more attacking in Olsson, and then on the right flank having the same, but Emerton more defensive, and Chimbonda more attacking. Gives us some good variety. Having Dunn/Pedersen/Hoilett/Yildiray as the attacking midfield options is excellent.

It could fall apart though if our central midfielder isn't good enough. Grella or a back to form Reid would do nicely, but I'm not so sure about N'zonzi... he's looked out of his depth past few games.

No, it was 4-2-3-1 which if Allardyce MUST persist with one up front is the way forward. Anything else would be too negative and wouldn't offer the striker enough support. Personally, I would much prefer to see 4-4-2 especially at home.

Key thing that will have a major bearing on our season is keeping Niko fit.

And for all those saying how brill it is to be in 10th, given the games we've got to come I think we might - just - scrape 40 points. We will not however finish anywhere near the top 10, but I don't think we'll go down either as Pompey, Hull and our 6-fingered friends should make the bottom 3 their own. The way the current regime are shaping (manager tactically AND trust financially!), anything from 17th up should be viewed as an achievement. We've been lucky with the wins we've had recently and better teams (many of which we have to play) would have put us firmly to the sword.

I know some of you are optimistic but I've yet to be convinced!

In which case why don't you stop whining so much now and wait for the inevitable slide down the table to resume it?

Jeez...if you can't enjoy this supposedly brief sojourn in the top half then just exactly what is the bloody point being a Rovers fan at all?

I'm pretty sure thats how Allardyce has always attempted to set us up as this season, the only problem being, up until recently he had players playing in midfield, who are uselss in a 4-3-3 i.e diouf and pedersen on the wings supporting the striker.

Don't know why he went with Di Santo and Kalinic up top today. People wanted him to play 4-4-2, but not against a hard working and very physical Stoke side. He should have stayed with the same team that drew at West Ham and majority would've been delighted with a point.

He went with 4-4-2 yet he played defensively! Stupid tactics from Sam, and now MUST win VS Hull on Wednesday or we'll slowly get dragged into them relegation places, especially with teams around us picking up unexpected and valuable points!

HE DIDN'T PLAY 4-4-2. Just because Di Santo & Kalinic are both strikers doesn't mean we played 4-4-2... Sheesh. Di Santo was playing in midfield, and Kalinic was left chasing shadows on his own. That does not constitute a 4-4-2.

I fancy us to do that, we're good at home and Hull are poor away.

If we do lose that then people can go mental...but let's wait until then eh? If we do win that, it will be three wins from five, ten points from fifteen. Obviously it doesn't look as good if we don't win.

Then why play a bloody striker in midfield? Stick with the same team as West Ham. Leave Diouf on the right with Emerton and Perdersen in the centre, and Olsson on the left. Or If you are not happy with the way Diouf is playing, stick in Reidy in the middle and Emerton on the right.

He had plenty of options, he also had Hoillet, yet he decided to go with a striker. Stupidity!

We absolutely must win on Wednesday, no doubt about that. Anything less than 3 points and we are going to be bricking it at the end of the season.

However, our away form is beyond dire. Most teams are not as good away as they are at home, but we are so much worse it's barely believable that we're watching the same players that play at Ewood. Our home form may save our skin this season, but we cannot go into next season with the same mentality as we have had this and last season in regards to away games. If our home form dries up either now or next season, and our away form continues in the same vein, we are screwed. We cannot bank everything on maintaining excellent home form, at some point we need to realise how valuable away points are and collect some.

Theres no hiding place for big Sham tonight in failing to prepare his team for the Stoke game.

Totally disagree with that Jal. At some point the players have to take responsibility on the pitch and today they didn't. The first goal was sloppy defending with a player left unmarked. Givet was asleep for the second goal and allowed a player to get behind him to score while the third should have been stopped by Robinson who seemed to go down in slow motion. Add the glaring miss by Di Santo and I can understand the manager's frustration.

I don't care who the manager is. Hughes, Allardyce, Souness or even Dalglish wouldn't have got a result today with the way in which the players failed to do their jobs. Today was a battle and too many of our highly paid players went missing at vital times.

Is it not Sams job to motivate these guys, get them into peak condition and a positive frame of mind, or am I missing something here.

Robinson going down slowly, Givet getting caught out, Di Santo missing, are these not repeating mistakes that we've witnessed all season.

Were the players all pulling in the same direction ?
