John Posted April 5, 2010 Posted April 5, 2010 Think we need to take into account all the top quality players we have lost over the past 2 years. Tugay, Friedel, Bentley, Cruz, Bentley, Ooijer etc. Most of them were, or have been, very important players for us. Having to replace those players with little money is not as easy as some suggest. Even clubs with much more money than us struggle to bring in players of the required quality. We have pretty much a new team which is holding its own and has potential to improve further.

One you haven't mentioned would have made all the difference on his own---Bellamy! But a fit Santa Cruz would have converted many of those chances which sadly fell to the likes of Di Santo, Kalinic and , of course, Roberts.

Spot on - we have lost some big parts of our team - but id say given the time & money he has spent, Sam has done a great job in helping us build a team fit for the future. NZonzi - cost just £400k - what would he be worth now.....hopefully next season with the extra experience & pre-season he will have a bigger impact and continue to improve. Olsson - Not his signing, but has made massive improvements under sam. Givet - has played a big part in our season Kalinic - has shown signs that with the right partner he should score goals at the top level We then have emerging talent in Jones, Hoilett & maybe one or two others such as Doran & Ramm. Shift on abit more deadwood this summer & replace with younger more talented & fitter players!
T4E Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 as was persisting with Diouf, Pedersen and Roberts, who have all proven they cannot perform on a consistent basis. Shush. Jason Roberts is great. I heard N'Zonzi got injured on Saturday night, some over zealous fan...?

Amo Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Correct me if I'm wrong, the only dud Sam has signed so far was the inexpensive Van Heerden. His short track-record here has been made of solid signings (Nzonzi, Givet) and the occasional mixed bag (Salgado, Diouf). I'm not overawed about Dindane, but I'm willing to give Sam the benefit of the doubt until we see him on the pitch.
T4E Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Where at Pompey? No, on a team night out in Manchester.

True - although Van Heerden never really got a chance (he was injured for abit) and then went. I also think we need to shift one of either Pascal or Jacobsen - I dont think either are a flop, its just with Salgado now playing well - there is no need for all 3 of them eating up wages! Id probably shift Pascal on, as he is most likely to have clubs interested!

Id probably shift Pascal on, as he is most likely to have clubs interested! He's our most versatile defender. He may not be the best in the positions, but he can do a job, and towards the start of the season he played very well. Just about him hitting the form. Salgado has shown his worth recently and you can guarentee he has a huge impact on the dressing room. If you were to get rid of anyone it would surely be Jacobsen. Not saying he is a poor defender, but he contributes the least from the other 2. If it was up to me i'd keep all 3.
TimmyJimmy Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 A couple of "ifs" ... if Sam gets us to finish top 10 and if we can sign a couple of good players in the Summer, then in my book Sam deserves Manager of the Year. A top half finish coupled with great young prospects already on board plus a new extra spark or two in the close season would really give us a platform for next year. Don't choke on your coffee, just look where we started post Ince and the squad building since, whilst at the same time we moved well clear of the relegation zone some time ago plus a half decent cup run and a Dingle double - and all on next to no money, plus the odd heart op. Sure the style issue upsets a few, but on balance which manager has done better than Sam in the last 12 months? If the players don't take their foot off the pedal and Sam spends his allowance sensibly then I think I'm well pleased with him and to be fair I think many critics on this board should pat him and the backroom staff on the back for a job well done.
47er Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I've seen Sam blamed for a few things but now he's the reason why Manure didn't get a penalty! http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/167460/Sam-Allardyce-and-Co-are-the-real-culprits/?

Ahhhh such a shame for the big clubs that ref cant give them a penalty!! GET OVER IT! We never get fair referees when we play the big clubs, so get over it!!
waggy Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 what do rovers managers see in roberts,he was terrible on sat,i've never known a centre forward miss more one on ones with the keeper,we pay 6mill fot nicola and bench him, these are the games he should be playing in

We never get fair referees when we play the big clubs, so get over it!! I read that, he must have forgotten Lee Sharpes dive at Ewood which gave Man U a win and Henning Bergs sending off, Berg had played the ball cleanly out for a corner, think the ref was Gerald Ashby!! All the replays and pundits said the ref was wrong, Ashby wouldnt admit it though!!
bellamy11 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I heard N'Zonzi got injured on Saturday night, some over zealous fan...? "Over zealous" is generous. "A bit p*ssed and clumsy" would be a more accurate description. Plus I think given his attitude, N'Zonzi brought it on himself.

bellamy11 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Why what happened? Some lunatic fan bulldozed him with a small table, seemed to catch him on the achilles (very fashionable spot). Thankfully the presence of Gael Givet probably diffused the situation.
duffbear Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 No, on a team night out in Manchester. Did he go with Jones and Olsson to the Haye Fight saturday night and get injuried there some how?
T4E Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Why I agree with you mate. I saw the 'fan' in question a few times, notably singing offensive songs about Jason Roberts toilet habits before the N'Zonzi incident. Did he go with Jones and Olsson to the Haye Fight saturday night and get injuried there some how? Not sure if he went to the fight but the assault on him was in the early hours of Sunday morning.
