:rover: sorry still think he's a long ball, cheat merchant :brfcsmilie:

So do I but he's also rovers manager and has done a hard job reasonably well on a limited budget and given us more success than a lot of clubs with far more fashionable managers and bigger budgets so what else can you ask of him? Exciting expansive football on our budget usually means a championship budget the following season.

The team can play some decent stuff on the deck, when given the opportunity. We need to break up our play more often, because the long ball game isn't always effective. However, handing a bumper deal to Pedersen would suggest it'll be more of the same. Aim for the corners and grab as many long throws as you can!

My opinion is that from midway through the season we started to break up our play more often, the tail end of the season we played on the deck maybe not enough more than we have done for a long time. we had some real tough games towards the end of the season and picked up points thanks to the direct/negative/hoofballl tactics. If that's what it takes it'll do for me whilst we slowly improve the style of play.

Whether MGP signed a new deal or not we would have been required to replace him for set pieces as that is where we are dangerous and progressively more effective, lofting free kicks into the big lads and causing problems for the opposition. We must play to our strengths and we are slowly but surely improving.

Lets just hope he's working on beating the first man and swinging a good ball in from a corner over the summer!

I don't mind the long throw. How many times do you hear the crowd moaning 'get a ball in the box' at least a long throw puts it in the blender and puts pressure on the keeper.

You forgot an important word where rovers are concerned, SURVIVAL. As that is what Rovers play for these days, first and foremost, to survive in the premiership. Everything else, sadly is a bonus. You may hate the style of football that Sam sets his players out to play,so be it. But it is my view that you support the club, the team through thick and thin, no matter the stle of football played. It may not be pretty, but it is effective.

Oh which top 4 club got a victory at Ewood Park this season. None of the top 4 sides like Sams style of play either, because they couldn't get 3 points off Rovers when they came to Ewood. Rovers need to build on that for away games for next season.

oh sam. i thought i'd seen the end of the long throw with speculation of mgp's departure and guti's arrival.

obviously not.

please entertain me at least a little next season.

I was enterained by our great home record including giving the big 4 a game, plus a little win over some local rival. Quite enjoyed seeing quality young players coming through an all.

Still lets 'play football the right way'.

Spurs

I'd forgotten they were in the top 4 this season. Gues I need to have a look at a Spurs message board and read about all these new signings they are going to make and how this time they'll win everything just to remind myself and get ready for a good laugh when their delusions catch up with them again.

I agree with you pal, but you've got to give the guy credit for what hes achieved, personal feelings aside, hes worked wonders to get us to 10th place.

I think Hughes was just unfortunate in the sense that no one came through during his time here. This will always then fall back to the question of whether or not players would have taken the chance had it been presented, but you would have to imagine that a manager and coaching staff that did well in the transfer market would have been reasonable judges of the players already at the club. I also think that once you have one player break through you are far more likely to give others a similar chance (Souness being a good example with the opportunities that he gave to the likes of Taylor and McEvely after the success of Dunn and Duff). The odd player got the chance with Hughes in the cups, but no one particularly impressed.

Just watching Mike Bassett, it reminds me of Sam :-)

I so strongly disagree with you for SO many reasons it's untrue.

He has a proven track record and doesn't need huge budgets

Firstly, he kept us up and he is renowned for having tactical nouse (I had to eat humble pie on so many occassions last season it was untrue!)

He's keen on all the latest techniques, his reputation and stock is high, worldwide, I assure you

He constantly uncovers "Gems" e.g. French 2nd division

He can and will "Lure" pig players to small clubs

He gives youth a chance

The players respect him

Other senior managers respect him

He did the dingles twice last year and we held most of the top clubs at our place

We finished 10th!

Our home record is awesome

He kept us in the prem FFS!

Bottom line, He's OUR manager, if you don't like him then follow a flakey little club nearer you fella, because:

A: He's staying

B: We'll improve

C: You clearly don't know a lot about the game

Spot the mistake!

Hughes did sign Olsson for the future to be fair.

You are probably right about the quality of player coming through, but I never got the impression that Hughes was that bothered about fixing it and getting involved in trying to reform the youth system so we could do better. He seemed to be more inclined to plug a gap in the squad with a journeyman like Berner than give a youngster a bit of a go. That is the only fault I can find with Hughes' reign really.

I'd say Sam is as good for us as Hughes was, and both are much better than that other guy who messed things up.

Calm down chap, he said he reminded him of Sam, not he's just like him.

Nah! I don't think so.

It's exactly the kind of thing that has very unfairly given him the image he has, it's wrong, he's clearly f*** all like him, it's like comparing apples and pears mate.

Not that I know the specifics of when reforms have been made to our youth system and how the youth coaching has been handled, but you would have to assume that any current success is most likely the results of efforts put in during the Hughes period, either that or blind luck.

Anyway, BS has had the oppotunity to bring through youth, i wouldnt say he had a similar stance at Bolton or Newcastle tbh.
