RibbleValleyRover Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 We just carry on regardless 47er. For all those extolling the virtues of Sam and the 'miracle' job he has done - consider the fact that our wage bill last season was 11th highest in the league and we came 10th. That hardly suggests a job of miracle proportions - good effort yes, miracle no. Sam is without doubt a big self publicist and his own biggest fan but he's not as good a manager as he likes to think. That's not to say I want rid of him, I'm not his biggest fan by any stretch of the imagination but to lose him would bring an instability that I don't think we could withstand. I'm not his number one fan but i cannot think of another manager out there that could replace him. The criteria is so difficult when it comes to the Rovers job: 1- Peanuts to spend. 2- Fight for survival each season. If Sam goes then i can see us in the sh1t big-time next season. (For those who mention Hughes, he would never come back nor would he be wanted back by a number of fans).

HemelRover Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 (For those who mention Hughes, he would never come back nor would he be wanted back by a number of fans). and what exactly does the fans opinion matter? Not a dig at the board but i remember a massive public opinion against Big Sam before Ince got the job. Most of the Sam supporters, myself included, only accepted him because of the mess that Ince left us in.

Totally agree RVR - my point is that Allardyce is now in a job that is about right for him (as the Bolton job was). He made a mess of the Newcastle job and for me is not the man for a big club with money to spend.
JAL Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 If big Sam has desires elsewhere, then hes go to go, theres simply no point hanging around now as Rovers dont need someone who isnt 100% committed as in the end it would show. Looks like the club a have a way of peeing off managers what with Mark Hughes and now Sam Allardyce.
thenodrog Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 Big Sam isn't the man of the moment to be considered the England manager. IF Capello were to resign then it would either be Hodgemister or Harry saggy face I'm not sure but I think Allardyce would be a better prospect than the pair of them. IMO when Sam does leave us, we are certain to decline, as will be very challenging to get a decent manager in. A 90% certainty imo. Just look at the clubs lower than us this season who had plenty more 'wind in their sails'. Very few foreign clubs like paying compo...they have a budget for a coach and that's for his wages. And two of his main rivals are free. If the wages offered are so good then Sam Allardyce can buy his own way out. Or do football peoples minds not work like that? They would have to in the real world.

If so nice of you to admit as much. It's a rare quality in these parts.
nicko Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Big Sam and Mark Hughes - complete with backroom team - are both in the same hotel in Dubai... That should make for interesting pool bar chat over there.

That's an indictment of our poor negotiations, not the quality of our squad or the manager.

Jackson Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Big Sam and Mark Hughes - complete with backroom team - are both in the same hotel in Dubai... That should make for interesting pool bar chat over there. Bloody hell. Who's the pool boy?
nicko Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 What is Hughes doing in Dubai?? I take it Sam's backroom team is at Brockhall?? And only Hughes has his team there? Hughes and his gang are all over there for the interview...although it is starting to sound like he could be getting the job. Sam's staff are over-seeing the press-ups and putting out of cones at Brockhall today.

Do you have any latest news on these takeover talks or are they stalling as people have suggested

Bobby G Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Which hotel is that? Maybe I should pay Big Sam a visit. I am certain he is with Derek Whyte and Rob MccAffrey. If you have access to those two, then you can have access to Big Sam.
John Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 A guess on hotels would Le Royal Méridien as Rob MccAffrey presents his TV show from there? (West Marina area) I am going out to Dubai later this week, but think Big Sam will be back in the UK when I am out there.....
nicko Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Hopefully something happens with the takeover talks and Sam stays with us.. Do you have any latest news on these takeover talks or are they stalling as people have suggested The Indians have been over...both sides are eyeing each other up...and in the meantime the manager can't sign players who would cost any kind of money... It's a vital few days.

It's a vital few days. He'll be loving that will Sam! Back to the same situation he was in with us 9/10 years back! Maybe he's feeling all nostalgic.
Amo Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Someone tell me why he can't sign players. That money isn't the board's, it's our extra cash from last season sales. It's there to be spent, takeover or no.
RibbleValleyRover Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 If Sam has been told he can't bring in any players at all until the takeover situation is resolved one way or the other then i could see some conflict being created there. When Sam gets notified of a veteran player past his best but with a pedigree and he is available for a free or low transfer fee then he wants him. He did it at Bolton and has done it at Rovers with Salgado.
T4E Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Bloody hell. Who's the pool boy? Money must be tight at United if they're digging out tracksuits from the early 90's for Valencia to wear.

It's there to be spent, takeover or no. No disrespect aimed at Nicko, but a tabloid reporter has said "in the meantime the manager can't sign players who would cost any kind of money..." I'm sure we're in the same position as we were last week. If the right man for the Rovers comes available we will try to sign him. I've not seen any statements from the club referring to any type of transfer embargo, so I'd hazard a guess at business as usual for Sam and his staff. As for the money not being the boards money.... The board run the club, they are in charge so every penny spent and any decisions to be made WILL go through the board.
67splitscreen Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Why would Sam be in a hotel?. I'm pretty sure he has a property in Dubai, BobbyG.? I think it was just before he signed for us or on one of his breaks, the media reported he was taking a break at his villa/apartment. Probably just having a beer with Hughsie.
