LeChuck Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 What about Nzonzi (Small fee) and Givet (2-3m) I agree that it was to replace important players though. Those two signings were Sam's off his back, i.e. because he wanted them, not because he was being forced to replace someone. I don't think even his harshest critics can say that the £3-4 million spent on those two was anything other than money well spent.

alexanders Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Sorry Lechuck. I thought it was only a discussion about how money spent, regardless of good or bad buys. No Niko, but Roberts on top.
thenodrog Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Good old Mr Bolton Wanderers Phd has got his excuses lined up with the takeover farce should this season go pear-shaped, but when was the last time a summer signing really transformed the season for us? I'm much more concerned to see how his last season signings perform. You must have the memory span of a goldfish EiT. Surely you must rem the spectacular transformation of the club following the signings of Fowler, Andrews and Grella?
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Problem with Sam coming out with comments like these means that each time an International job comes up that might interest him he will be linked and therefore it could unsettle the club. Sam would have been better off just keeping his thoughts to himself.
thenodrog Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 If he's after away then he can get the f out of here..ROVERS AINT A TOY FOR HIM TO PLAY WITH AND ABUSE...england manager ..MY ARSE Who mentioned England Abbs? Sam didn't. One things for sure if he got offered the England manager's job it would be because he'd have performed spectacularly for us. I really hope he gets it in 3 years time. If he doesn't succumb to some minor arab team it's more likely he'd be offered a position like the RoI job. Just as an aside from Cryer's article in the LT...... "While Allardyce’s chances of managing England in the future appear to have reduced over the last couple of years....... Reduced!!! wtf???? After wally and the italian wally's spectacular failures I'd imagine even Gazza would be able to do a better job as manager! Surely with the press and public screaming for an Englishmen to take the helm Arry and Sam would be favourites? Arry would be a Venables type disaster imo.
BuckyRover Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I think his chances have reduced, from slim to none.
thenodrog Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I think his chances have reduced, from slim to none. What? After the spectacular showing of Capello's team? Are you saying that Allardyce would have done worse? It's hard to imagine how and especially when virtually every international team plays his long time preferred formation. Personally I'd like to see how he'd fare given the choice of the nations finest. I'd think players attitudes to playing for England would show the biggest alteration. What we need is a manager who is independent enough, proud enough and financially secure enough to make Englands success his personal legacy. FA and sponsor politics needs to take a back seat. Wont happen but it should. btw I'd like to think Mark Hughes could do similar were he to get the job.
BuckyRover Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Have you not seen Mike Bassett England manager? It doesn't work
bigbrandjohn Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Problem with Sam coming out with comments like these means that each time an International job comes up that might interest him he will be linked and therefore it could unsettle the club. Sam would have been better off just keeping his thoughts to himself. Not sure his head is in the game. He has seen the World Cup and the momey you can get for being an "International Manager". He has got bugger all to spend or maybe gazillions depending on whether we get bought which is mucking up his plans. All of his targets are either signed up elsewhere, staying put or not much good. Thats why he is probably playing two teams to see if anyone he has ignored in the past has the potential like Olson last season to break through.
FourLaneBlue Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Managers get judged by the signings they made more than the one's they didn't have the budget for. Whether or not he's had 2 million to spend this time around is surely inconsequential if 6 million a year ago doesn't buy you much. Managers get judged for what they do for the club far more than signings. 1st season...led us safe from relegation after the Ince-debacle. Took over when in 19th...improved us to 15th. 2nd season...improved cup performance due to semi-final. Improved league position from 15th to 10th. Now, you can nitpick all you like about this signing or that signing but that is the bottom line and far more important about whether will hit the post ten times or won't be able to hit cow'd behind with a banjo. So far, Sam has been spectacularly successful in terms of coming in and improving our league position. Will it continue? To be honest...all that is really needed as Rovers boss is to keep away from the relegation zone and keep us on the Prem TV gravy train for another year. It seems that will pacify the current owners, at least. Limited ambitions...so it is good to have a manager who is obviously more ambitious for the club than that.
Mattyblue Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Have you not seen Mike Bassett England manager? It doesn't work What doesn't? Are you actually comparing Allardyce to an 'old school' teacup thrower?! Give the man some credit.
Mc Love Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Just heard Sam is retiring from club management in 3 years?!?!
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 No that's wrong, it's 2 years. At least we have a bit of warning .
92er Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 No that's wrong, it's 2 years. At least we have a bit of warning . The headline in yesterday's LT talked about Allardyce quitting in 2/3 years, and the article stated he hoped to quit the Premier League within 3 years.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I thought it was at the end of the 11/12 season, when Fab's contract runs out.
92er Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I thought it was at the end of the 11/12 season, when Fab's contract runs out. You're right. I thought you were talking about the LT article?
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I haven't read the article in question, I just heard bits and bobs and put two and two together .
philipl Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 If he is serious about getting the England job, we are in for two very successful seasons!
Mattyblue Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 If he is serious about getting the England job, we are in for two very successful seasons! I am very much in the pro-Sam camp, but if he got the England job, I'd be amazed. The media would go apoplectic for one thing.
thenodrog Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Have you not seen Mike Bassett England manager? It doesn't work No I haven't. But surely thats a work of fiction, a fantasy invented in the mind of some scriptwriter to attract TV viewers isn't it? If so then any comparison is absolutely ludicrous Bucky. If he is serious about getting the England job an international managerial position, we are in for two very successful seasons! Corrected for you Philip. I am very much in the pro-Sam camp, but if he got the England job, I'd be amazed. The media would go apoplectic for one thing. Good! That bunch of know nowts hated Alf Ramsey! The names and faces will have changed since '66 but the mentallity and intellect will be the same. Those pillocks think the world begins and ends with the Fab Four. They are the very last people whose opinions should be sought.
thenodrog Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 Not sure his head is in the game. He has seen the World Cup and the momey you can get for being an "International Manager". I'd imagine Sam Allardyce earns more from BRFC than all but 2 or 3 of the really top international managers. Capello's salary is obscene and testament to the lunatic thinking of the FA. I don't believe the salaries of any 2 managers competeing in the last World Cup added together even get close to Capello's bundle.
ABBEY Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Just see the telewag...the great one strikes again.how come when we lose its someone elses fault, never his and when we win he's the expert and it is what he's paid to do...the man buggers belief.
Amo Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Just see the telewag...the great one strikes again.how come when we lose its someone elses fault, never his and when we win he's the expert and it is what he's paid to do...the man buggers belief. Who cares? Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho. They're all terrible losers and smug winners, but they can afford to be when they're good at their jobs.
Doaksie Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Who cares? Fergie, Wenger, Mourinho. They're all terrible losers and smug winners, but they can afford to be when they're good at their jobs. I have to say - I really like Sam's smug "I'm brilliant" attitude when we win. Probably much how I would be too. If he doesn't praise himself, nobody else will! Mourinho gets widely praised for creating a siege mentality within his teams, yet Sam gets derided. Here's hoping for plenty more of smug Sam this year again.
John Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I like it too - for a naturally quiet man, Sparky started to talk himself up to during his Rovers day. No one pays too much attention when you are at "small town clubs" and the lack of credit is not always there. Why not talk yourself up.
