Majiball Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Its the same for all the other 19 managers, who don't seem to be moaning about it.

Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted August 5, 2010 Moderation Lead Posted August 5, 2010 To be fair to Sam...it did seem that the better games were more likely towards the end of the season than at the start. This could suggest that we are improving not only in our results but also in our play in general. This was always going to take time after the Ince debacle. The worry is that without a couple of new faces we are standing still. Those who stand still in football go backwards. Actually, with Derbyshire, Benni and Di Santo all having left with only Kalinic coming in...we have ourselves regressed. Other areas have been strengthened whether through purchases (N'zonzi, Givet) or youth making a mark (Olsson, Jones) but that has not helped us up front. An injury to Kalinic and...dear me... For starters, I am not an advocate of the long ball game but I think there's a time and a place. I.E the last 10 minutes or so of a game when we're chasing the game, and need to score badly. Or against the bigger teams, though it can backfire and work against you at times! If you try to get the ball down and pass your way against Arsenal you'll get murdered- it doesn't get simpler than that!
koi Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 It's disgusting to suggest footballers should be paying less tax. If they were paid a reasonable wage then they would pay so much tax in the first place instead of the disgusting sums they earn these days.
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Its the same for all the other 19 managers, who don't seem to be moaning about it. Spot on. He shouldn't be moaning about wages at Rovers as he knew the deal when he came here and he has to share some blame that our wage budget being maxed out. Pedersen could have gone, that would have cleared a large chunk of the wage bill. Salgado also added a hefty wage to an already strained budget. Less moaning Sam and more focus on getting the team ready for a new season.
thenodrog Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Its the same for all the other 19 managers, who don't seem to be moaning about it. I'd bet my house that they will all be moaning about it.
Majiball Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I'd bet my house that they will all be moaning about it. Behind closed doors no doubt. As opposed to spending the best part of a couple of hours a day gassing to his journo mates, why doesn't he sit down and start watching some vid's of bloody players or working on something that benefits the club.
BuckyRover Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I get the feeling (and I don't know why) that Sam will be chopped at the first convenient moment. Post takeover (God willing)
RevidgeBlue Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I get the feeling (and I don't know why) that Sam will be chopped at the first convenient moment. Post takeover (God willing) Don't know if he'd be "chopped" but I always get the impression he'd be off like a rat up a drainpipe at the first half decent opportunity. Can't say I would blame him either. I can't understand why he wasn't allowed to sign our original target the Polish guy. Didn't he eventually go for 1.5m? Same with Jelavic. Seems a top prospect, seems almost nsuicidal not to sign him for up to 4m when you'd have to shell out 1.5m for a veteran plodder like Beattie or a complete crock like Vaughan.
LeChuck Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I can't understand why he wasn't allowed to sign our original target the Polish guy. Didn't he eventually go for 1.5m? Lewandowski? He went to Dortmund for £4 million.
RevidgeBlue Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Lewandowski? He went to Dortmund for £4 million. Oh - ok. Still more than reasonable if he's any good.
Amo Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Still more than reasonable if he's any good. If he was Sam's main target, he should have confronted the board there and then. Surely we could loan £1.5m from the Trust and pay them back in player sales?
LeChuck Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 More than reasonable for his age. I think he's a cracking prospect, I reckon he'll leave Dortmund for at least double that. It's why we need new owners really, we need to be able to invest in players like him to have a sustainable future.

Surely we could loan £1.5m from the Trust and pay them back in player sales? Couldn't agree more. (And with Le Chuck) I seem to remember Sam actually saying at the time in the media that he was an experienced manager who'd always managed to put things right and eventually balance the books whilst at Boltonetc.
broadsword Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Well, Sam has said that he wants to win silverware as a manager before he retires. At the current rate of progress his chances of achieving that with Blackburn are nil, and the chances of another club coming in in the next year or so which would offer him a realistic chance of winning a trophy are pretty low as well. he's also said he wants to out-perform expectations at Blackburn and then go after 2 years, but I don't really understand that. If UAE came in and said we want you for 4 years, please sign now, in his shoes, I'd be off like a shot.
Exiled in Toronto Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 I can't understand why he wasn't allowed to sign our original target the Polish guy. Didn't he eventually go for 1.5m? Was it not the case that Allardyce himself was the problem, switching his attention to Guti - a signing that would have blown our already bloated wage structure to pieces - prompting a not unreasonable degree of caution from the corner office along the lines of 'you can't have both'?

No, it was not the case. But don't let that stop you taking another opportunity to criticise the manager.
Majiball Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8889745.stm I've just watched this and I must say I'm a little confused. He says he's looking for a striker who can score 12-16 goals a season. We are rumoured to have about 4 million to spend.Last year armed with 6 million we couldn't buy a striker who could score that amount of goals and yet this year with even less we are trying to.
philipl Posted August 5, 2010 Posted August 5, 2010 Just looked through the list of registered transfers. In July, a grand total of 15 players were signed by Premier League clubs (one of whom was loaned straight back to the club he had been signed from) and in the five days we have had of August the total number of registered Premier League incomings is one.

Hughes proved he could do it: Bellamy, McCarthy, Santa Cruz, but Sam still has it all to do with his striker search. Kalinic has shown glimpses of talent but was shunned for six months, before scoring two PL goals. Di Santo came in as a first-team starter and flattered to deceive.

We're all still waiting for City to buy Milner. What the hell happened to football in this country??

If we go into the season with 0 strikers by selling Roberts and Kalinic having not had a pre-season then I am quietly confident we will soon see ourselves picking up some silverware. The LDV cup.
BPF Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 The Sun stirring the pot. In a way, that would make sense. If we could afford a better standard of player, I would be hoping for a better standard of football. I do appreciate what Sam has done, but money would have to bring a different ethos with it. Yes, we did finish tenth last season but the standard of football was often beyond terrible.

If it was your £300m, and given his record at Newcastle with money (Alan Smith? Cacapa? Rozenthal? Barton? Viduka?) then I think you would be thinking about a change at the helm .... ? He's a proven operator when purse strings are tight, but I'm not sure he's the man when you've got a significant budget.
Hughesy Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Perhaps he would be perfect if given a 'decent' budget & told thats his lot for the season...say £15m - that way he can work on finding 2 or 3 players, rather than just throwing money around for the sake of it.
