jim mk2 Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Goalkeeper managers are very, very rare. Kevin Blackwell is one of the few.

John Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Fulham boss Mark Hughes believes Blackburn counterpart Sam Allardyce will be a strong candidate for the England job in two years' time.
LeChuck Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Goalkeeper managers are very, very rare. Strange that, isn't it? You'd think having spent a career mainly observing the game that they'd be more qualified than outfield players. Plus they usually seem to have a bit more between their ears in interviews. Maybe it's not that they can't, just that they don't want to. I can't think of many who have tried and failed, the majority just seem happy to move into goalkeeping coaching instead. Maybe because that's such a specialist role (I can't imagine non-goalkeepers would be able to do it).

Nobody else other than possibly the politically acceptable Woy Hodgson is as good as those two by some distance.

thenodrog Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Mark Hughes is Welsh Thats why I said 'home grown' rather than English. I think Hughes would be acceptable especially as the abysmal O'Neill keeps being linked. I don't think a sweaty would be considered though somehow.
den Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Allardyce's view on the physical side of football.
tony gale's mic Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 Strange that, isn't it? Maybe because that's such a specialist role (I can't imagine non-goalkeepers would be able to do it). But they don't really get involved in the tactical side of the game and don't work as closely with the other outfield players (except centre backs) to know the ins and outs of the game I think.
John Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Allardyce insisted however: "I'm not suited to Bolton or Blackburn, I would be more suited to Inter Milan or Real Madrid. It wouldn't be a problem to me to go and manage those clubs because I would win the double or the league every time.

Sometimes you look a real plonker when you sit for ages fishing with no bites then all of a sudden you realise you have no bait on.
bubblerrovers Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Why does he come out with this rubbish. I'm thankful of what he has done at rovers but I really can't say I like him. If this takeover goes ahead I really hope we get rid. Sam your an good manager but never champions league or International class

If this takeover goes ahead I really hope we get rid. Sam your an good manager but never champions league or International class Think that would be pretty close to madness at this stage. Don't want to turn into City and so on. Whilst I agree he should keep his jowls shut, I think he is very good at what he does and we do owe him some semblance of latitude for saving us from the precious managers disaster. Like they say about singers - "Shut up and manage"

It wouldn't be a problem to me to go and manage those clubs because I would win the double or the league every time. If he has definitely said this, that's unbelievable. Like someone else has said, the work he has done here is great but you can't say that about the club that's paying your wages, the club whose fans are chanting your name. Why is he coming out with stupid things so close to a takeover? Is he trying to get fired?
S15 Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Sam's talking @#/?, he'd bag the European Cup every year as well.
otto man Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I thought it was Big_Sam on twitter. I really thought it was a joke! Well Sam as you've now publicly stated you aint "suited" to us maybe the new owners wil agree with you and release you to persue your"dreams"(delusions) at a "big" club...look out Jose Fat Sams a comin!

Kind of reminds me of Jurassic Park, Jose sitting in the office and his glass of water starts rippling, Sam smashes though the door and roars off a big fart.
Commondore Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 It might of course been said tongue in cheek, but if not he's basically saying he's the best manager the world has ever seen but that some big conspiracy has kept him working below his godlike capabilities.

If he has conspiracy theories like that, he fits in well with our fan base.
PAFELL Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 If he has definitely said this, that's unbelievable. Like someone else has said, the work he has done here is great but you can't say that about the club that's paying your wages, the club whose fans are chanting your name. Why is he coming out with stupid things so close to a takeover? Is he trying to get fired? I think we should read it in a way that shows Sam has ambition to be the best he can be, with the best players he has at his disposal. The reality is that both Hughes and Sam could only operate at both Rovers and bolton on a shoe string. I do not believe that Sam was putting Rovers or even bolton down. Put it this way, would somebody like Jose, Wenger or Fergerson be happy being the manager of Rovers. I believe the answer to that is no. But that may also because they are so used to manageing clubs with money and would struggle to do what both Sam and Hughes did for Rovers with no money. The reality of life in my view is that it is easier for a poor person, who all of a sudden receives a fortune, to cope with their new found wealth (not everybody) than it would be for somebody who was born into riches, to all of a sudden to lose it all, and survive in life. having to surrender all they had to go and work for, example the minimum wage. I believe that is what Sam is trying to say. Both he and Hughes could be even better managers than what they are now, if they had the financial backing other managers have. The reason being is that they are skilled at managing people and getting the best out of, say not so classy players. Managers like Hughes and Sam find players and turn them into better players. Others like wenger find players who are already stars and build their egos up.
whiteinpeace Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 It might of course been said tongue in cheek, but if not he's basically saying he's the best manager the world has ever seen but that some big conspiracy has kept him working below his godlike capabilities. Sam said the same many times whilst he was with us. He's not saying it tongue in cheek he truly believes he's good enough to manage Real Madrid etc and has only been held back by some sort of big club "consipiracy". Said the same sort of thing when he went for the England job. Good manager and all that, but has a massive chip on his shoulder that supports his very overinflated ego. However, when he's managing your club it doesn't really matter I guess.
AndyC Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 one of the reasons I love big Sam - he's hilarious!! makes for an interesting couple of days listening to all the pundits then talk about us!
Stuart Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 What if Sam is actually sending out a message to a prospective new owner that he shares their lofty ambitions and shouldn't be cast aside for a "trendy" Sven or Mancini?
