Allardyce has a pop back at Murphy

I particularly like this quote: ""The perception of Blackburn Rovers is the wrong one, in many, many cases and we have to live with it," said Allardyce. "The perception of Sam Allardyce is the wrong one, but I have to live with it."

A bit of public empathy with his employers at last?

His comments are correct and reflect what many of us were saying on the Bryan Douglas thread.

Paul Merson's comments about Sam Allardyce & Rovers.

I think Sam Allardyce has done a great job with that team. They haven't got much money, but he'll make sure they don't get relegated. Put it this way, Newcastle wouldn't have gone down if he'd stayed there. He doesn't get enough credit for the job he does.

Blackburn get the ball in the other half and play from there - and there's nothing wrong with that. You have to cut your cloth accordingly

Of course though, we should be playing more open, attacking football, especially with the pure talent we have in midfield/attack.....

Then Sam needs to work on improving the tactics he has decided to stick with based on the squad available. If we are going to play a long ball direct game then he needs to get the passing accuracy far better. I'm happy for us to play a long ball direct game if it’s accurate, most of the time a long ball goes straight to the opposition. He also needs to work on getting support to that lone striker, launching the long ball up to a lone man who then controls it but there is nobody within a mile near him to link up isn’t good enough.

He was on top form in the press conference, but he's got to knock the third person chat on the head!

I think generally if you're going to go with a long ball game, you're going to have to expect the passing accuracy to be a lot lower than if you go short. The idea is that you don't keep a lot of possession at all, but on the occasions you do get the ball in the opposition half you make something happen. I think not only the wingers need to support the striker, but also the full backs. There definitely needs to be more tactical work on supporting the lone striker.

Funny, 'cos Bolton have managed it without breaking the bank.

Yeah, watching Bolton is just like watching Arsenal - where did they finish in the league last season?

Plus Bolton have still had the flexibility to actually buy someone!

Last season means nothing. Coyle has had a year to imprint his style and it's paying off so far. They know how to mix it about.

They've brought in some good freebies, granted, but Elmander, Cahill and Muamba (none of whom are earth-shattering names) cost £20 million!

You said as much yourself, they're hardly renowned for their silky skills. You can hardly say Bolton have a stronger squad than ours.

Maybe not today. But unless our investment model changes, we'll sooner or later be looking longingly at "that lot" wishing we had as good a squad.

Anyway, the point is, in the last 3 years they have broken the bank - at least as far as our budget is concerned.

That doesn't have a lot to do with the matter at hand.

I wouldn't go that far, Jisty. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of their spending was on the back of Anelka's £15m move to Chelsea.

The year they sold Anelka for £15m they spent a total of £27m (net spend of approximately +£9m all told).

Over the last 3 years they are about +£11m.

What's our net spend over the last 3 years?
