Reading this thread, you would think we were cast adrift at the bottom of the table after spending a fortune on players in the summer.

We could very easily go either way in the coming months, add to the fact our manager's contract's up next year, why shouldn't we speculate on potential successors? Sounds like you're clutching at straws.

Clutching at straws? Speak to most people who don't hate Sam and they think he has done an excellent job during his time here - add to that most of the senior players at the club think he is one of the best managers they have worked under.

It is too easy to forget that he has been working under the tightest financial constraints - funnily enough that does make his job bl00dy difficult - go through our team/squad, it really isn't that good and is lacking in a number of areas.

We can speculate on successors of course as new owenrs at football clubs sometimes like their own man in - however I am not having a go at that.

I've said he's done a good job and I'm not exactly his biggest fan. However, with new owners and a new chapter in Rovers' history, do we have to stay up at any cost? If Venky's want to raise our profile, losing 7-1 and playing such mind-numbing football won't be the answer. Abbey, bless him, makes a good point. Even when Sam spent money at Newcastle, he still resorted to his usual tactics. The man's 56 years old and close to retirement, he ain't gonna change now.

I know people argue that we don't always play percentage football, but for the overwhelming majority we do. The only time I really remember us ditching it was against Chelsea, both in the league cup under McDonald last year, and this year at home. Funnily enough, both led to outstanding performances. Now, since we've been here so many times before, you'll probably argue this is because our players aren't good enough. But it was nothing to do with the players individual ability and more about the attitude and the gameplan. I remember that Pedersen even dropped his tedious long-throws for some reason. And although we can't play such high tempo football week in, week out, it would be nice to have a regular taste of it - something I don't think Sam has the heart for.

I think the bottom line is you can't really judge until you have a couple of seasons at the club. Hughes didn't look any great shakes at Rovers a third of the way into the first season. Neither did Hodgson at Fulham.

I'm pretty sure if they are backed both will do decently for their clubs.

Agreed. And I think Sam has to be judged when he's had a spell with some Venky money to spend. He's done wonders on a shoe-string. Further many of those wanting him out and speculating on possible replacements are just carrying on what they started BEFORE Allardyce even arrived.

They retire for a liitle while, we have a bad defeat and out they come. He never stood any chance with plenty on here.

and when he wins its hail hail hail ..works both ways ?

Well that isn't true in my case. I was posting after Saturday's slaughter saying more or less "bad result but don't overreact". What did you have to say after the Villa and Newcastle games?

You can't deny you've been on his case since before he was appointed. Apparently we can't hire a manager who once managed Bolton, however successful he was! You even think the same about Coyle. Luckily, not many people make important appointments purely on the grounds of personal prejudice.

Trying to imagine your posts if we ever did get Coyle and he took us to the top! Come to think of it, you wouldn't post!

I wonder if this is how Saturdays phone call went?

But what happens if Hughes become available???? :tu:

Topman - you need to realise managers generally need time, however we live in a very fickle world these days. Your comments on Hughes earlier are not accurate or fair as he's hardly had any time at Fulham - we can't start judging managers after 15 games, they need much longer than that.

Back to Sam, he has done so well with hardly any money, why not give him some cash to prove himself? You will say his time at Newcastle was a disaster but then again they had their best start in Premier League history under him, and yet again he had hardly any time there.

And if your still convinced his time there was a massive failure, surely you cannot say his record at Bolton wasn't pretty decent!

Again, someone will pipe up and say his signings at Newcastle were all awful however by all accounts he is not going to have an enormous amount of cash to spend with us - plus, some people learn from their mistakes

I like Hughes as you know. Sam doesn't deserve the sack though. Far from it.

If the owners do tire of Sam, that would be a great replacement but there's little chance of him being available. Same with Coyle. Hence the enormous risk.

The Ince appointment has put the shakes in me. I'm still recovering. No more risks with chancy managers thanks.

Honestly John I think there are quite a few fans out there who are a bit worried about Sam's ability in the transfer market.

Looking back to his time at Newcastle he did buy some average players especially paying over the odds for them. David Rozehnal for £2.9m, a well past his prime Alan Smith for £6m, Mark Viduka who was so injury prone at that point.

He hasn't been exactly stellar with his signings for Rovers either. N'zonzi has a reasonable first season but seems to have really dropped in form when he has played this season. Chimbonda had those few games where he was decent and offering something to the side after that he has been very poor as evidenced with his display against United. Kalinic looks a player but not in Sam's system, we spent £6 million on the lad and on the evidence so far (let's face it Sam won't change his system) it's looking like a major cock-up by Sam.

We have also been told not to expect megabucks to spend; I also assume that applies to our wage budget? If so I do have concerns about Sam's penchant for signing veterans (past their prime players on huge wages). There was talk of Sam really wanting to go for Raul and Guti in the summer and would have done if it wasn’t for the finances. Surely going off what the owners have said and the link to Kentaro the ideal model for us is to bring in younger players develop them and sell for a profit?

I’m not saying Sam shouldn’t be given the chance to spend money and ultimately that is down to the new owners. But I do have serious concerns about his ability in the transfer market.

Fair point - I am not going to say every signing has been great for us because that wouldn't be correct - however every manager makes mistakes in the market, but Sam has made some decent signings IMO: Givet overall has been a success along with Diouf and Salgado.

Must remember, when comparing it with other clubs, he has not actually spent that much money during his time here - plus it was very much a case of firefighting in his first year as a lot of quality/experienced players left the club (plus wage bill reductions meant further restrictions & a lack of flexiblity in the transfer market).

I think it is not a fair assessment to judge a manager like Mark Hughes after a few games or make comments such as “he has not pulled any trees up yet". The league table is very tight points wise so I would be very careful about making predictions generally. Sparky has shown himself more than capable of managing a football club previously (e.g. when he managed us). Add to that he did a fantastic, first class job during his time here.

Obviously, a manager like Paul Ince who had no top level managerial experience (plus was a n*mpty), therefore it was very much a case of going into the unknown (some of us dreaded that appointment from the start mind you) – particularly in this day and age, most Board of Director’s would err on the side of caution if things had not started well in that type of tenure.
