[Archived] Sam Allardyce

Recommended Posts

It's just occurred to me that Williams would have interviewed Sam and Ince only days apart, if not closer than that. Surely he must have seen the gulf between the two if the two press conferences are anything to go by? He was obviously blinded by this 'model' he keeps banging on about - young up and coming British managers - even though we'd only had one of them in a row.

I think you're spot on EiT. I had major doubts before that Ince would have interviewed better than Allardyce (or anyone else for that matter) and the past couple of days seem to back that up.

JW took way too much notice of the Facebook group idiots in the Summer. Allardyce was the obvious choice then, even more so than he is now.

What I think you will find is that, as has been reported over the past couple of days, Big Friendly Sam withdrew his application when still in the running, so was left with Ince and McClaren probably.

Caught between a rock a hard place I would say, and at the time the gamble would have been Ince as there was the unknown factor about him where as McClaren was roundly disliked and unpopular.

Sam was not in the running when the deicsion was made in the summer due to himself not Williams.

Big Man Sam's blue & white army

Big Bad Sam's blue & white army

?

I think we all agree the 3 syllable works best, and I too (in the best tradition of the school that a convert is worse than a lifetime practitioner) think we should drop the "Fat", like we did for Jack (who was originally known as Fat Jack rather than Uncle Jack) now he is the body of our kirk - SOoooo, what about "All-ar-dyces' Blue and White Army"? (like we did for Sou-ness-es' B&W A)

Do you not think Sam withdrew because he knew of the opposition to him and knew that JW was wavering? As I understood it his withdrawal was a saving face measure.

We will possibly never know the truth, the word coming out from Sam himself is that he didn't think it was the right time for him to return after speaking to his other half, and also described it as a misunderstanding.

Nothing PC about basic respect and affording the new manager a welcome that isn't an insult.

I'd hope you are on your own with your daft chant on saturday however, given the burgeoning chav culture in the BBE I suspect you wont be.

Some years ago Sam called himself or described himself as Big Fat Sam. Did they also not chant that at Bolton? Though I stand corrected on that part.

no need to stand corrected my friend - you are spot on :)

EDIT: I now also stand corrected, i am informed it was actually "Big sam's superwhite army"

What wrong with the word "fat" anyway, hardly the worse insult in the world. It's a moniker lots of people use, and I was always under the impression Allardyce got it after the main baddie from Bugsy Malone (to whom he passes a resembalance).

..that's why it works.

You'll have to excuse me now I'm going to listen to some music, I've got a great collection including "Big Boy Slim", "Bigs Domino" and "Bigs and Small"......

I still can't believe he actually chose Ince, he would have been better appointing the canteen cook, and the wally with the brolly is doing well at FC Twente!

Ah! the old 20:20 hindsight

BFS withdrew his interest so the choice was then limited.

I know, the phrase "my gran could do better" is often used as an exxegeration but I honestly reckon she could. I honestly think that we'd have been better off just telling the lads "you remember what Hughes made you do, just do that every week" and gone without a manager at all.

As Churchill surveyed the wreckage of the East End, news leaked to him of the arrival of a great General. Written off by most following his 3 month failiure in Libya, Montgomery had a point to prove. His methods and strategies were seen as too advanced and too intellectually challenging to work properly in the theatre of war. Traditionalists bemoaned his attention to detail, and ridiculed his large entourage each laden with specialist disciplines and focussed delivery. As England stood alone in the deep and dark valley of 1942 news reached Winston of a great victory at Alamein over the Desert Fox. The War had turned. With remarkable prescience, Churchill remarked

"They have received back again that measure of fire and steel which they have so often meted out to others. Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

What did Churchill have to say when Monty sent allied paratroopers against two SS Panzer divisions? :P

I certainly wasn't happy about Allardyce being in the running in the summer, but having seen how much the club has been uplifted in the past few days he's clearly the right man for the job. He demands respect, such is the stature of his character. After the Ince debacle it's exactly what Rovers needed.

The appointment of Sam has been covered in depth by a lot of the SEA Press and TV - all great advertising for Rovers in this part of the world. The coverage Rovers are getting in Thailand (and the rest of SEA) in the Press and on TV (especially ESPNStar Asia) following Sam's appointment is fantastic. Today (Saturday) the Bangkok Post Sports Section has 2 in depth articles on us and last night ESPNStar Asia TV had two football programmes that had good and positive features on Rovers. Sam was a guest pundit on some of their shows last season and was good. He's held in high esteem out here. All the positive vibes are so refreshing after the recent past depression. So lets get that win today or at least a good performance to get the Rovers Sam show rolling.
