A few stories being told all round at the moment...

Allardyce source tells me he is in the frame despite some opposition within the club. Wonder if he would play off Rovers against Sunderland if he is offered it.

Souey has not been contacted...could be making him sweat.

Those were the two in the frame when this kicked off about 10/11 days ago.

I keep hearing there are people on the board who are on opposite sides about these two...some pro, some anti.

There could be others in the frame because I hear all sorts of managers and their agents have been in touch.

A foreign friend tells me Avram Grant says he is in the frame but that Sunderland like him too. Hmm.

Curbishley still a candidate. Yawn.

Any news on who JW met off a flight today? Surely that story (if true) would provide a big clue about the identity of our next manager?

So can someone please point me to the anti-Allardyce Facebook thingy? ............oh there isn't one! Well, well!

Wanted to set up a Pro-Sam one!

If we appoint Roy Keane I will find John Williams' address and send him some excrement in the post. I swear.

Me too, please let me know when you do!

I prefer Roy Keane.

Not what we need at this club, thank you very much!!

Come on John, get sam on board, he is the hero next door!!

I thought it would be clear as to who the board wanted based on the decision to fire Ince and announcement that the new man would be in by Saturday, by what you say Nicko it is still well and truly up in the air!

JW said he hoped he'd be in by Saturday but there were no guarantees and they needed to ensure they got the right man.

All that suggests to me is that the candidate is a man currently not employed.

Nicko don't know if you can shed some light on this, but all the noise I've heard from Mackem friends of mine who say theyve heard stuff is that Sam doesn't stand much of a chance of getting the Sunderland job. Is this accurate?

Can you confirm that Keane isn't in the running Nicko?

Don't think so.

It's maybe a pointer...but I heard that the meeting in Manchester, involving the trustees and the board, decided the next manager did not have to be short-term.

Short-term restricts it to Souey or Sam.

So the field coiuld be more open that it was when those two were first mentioned...within the club I stress.

Allardyce viewed as a short term appointment? I could see Souness as a short term option, but Allardyce? I couldn't see Allardyce signing a short term contract until the end of the season but I could Souey.

I've been viewing it since the media has been saying these are the two likely options:

Souness- short term

Allardyce-long term

It puts a whole different spin on it all if the board are viewing Allardyce as a short term, until end of the season option.

Nicko, there has been a lot of talk on here about managers like Houllier, Mancini and Terim. Could you see any of those kind of managers coming or do you reckon we will stick to a British manager?

I am guessing the shortlist of four/five means Allardyce, Souness, Curbishley, Grant and who???

I think your short list sounds about right.

My worry is that they go for someone who may prefer Sunderland more and you end up looking stupid.

I think that John Williams must be confident of getting their 1st choice as otherwise he would not come out firstly say that they hope to have someone is place before Saturday's match and then this evening say that "good progress being made". It is clear that Rovers have done their homework before sacking Ince.

I know for sure that they're looking for someone to keep us up this season, then take us forward from there.
