BuckyRover Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I was more shocked that Sam wanted to sign him. He has been a crock for years (albeit a good player).

thenodrog Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I was more shocked that Sam wanted to sign him. He has been a crock for years (albeit a good player). Exactly. After Dahlin when we got spanked through the courts by our insurance company it's just too big a risk for us. I doubt Grella's injury situation after signing for big money would help either.
LeftWinger Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I was more shocked that Sam wanted to sign him. Why? He would have fit in perfectly at Rovers - being a midfielder only capable of about 10 starts a season at best.
LeChuck Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Hang on - do we even know Sam wanted to sign him? Didn't Nicko just say the reason he looked ###### off in an interview was because the board wouldn't back him to sign a player around the time Bullard moved, so people just put 2 + 2 together? I'd be surprised if he wanted to spend £5 million on Bullard, that certainly wasn't his style at Bolton.
Oklahoma Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 News here are reporting that Portsmouth had a €6.7million bid for Manuel Fernandes rejected. But since Valencia have a BIG financial problem, they will have to start selling players soon and Portsmouth are going to make a new bid. I think he could be a good player for us.

I doubt Grella's injury situation after signing for big money would help either. If the accounts for last year bring home anything its the need to reduce the wage bill to a more manageable level (in relation to turnover). The only way to do that would be to reduce the numbers in the squad, and if we're to have any chance of that we need to sign more reliable players and stop getting in proven crocks.
Hughesy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Get rid of Rigters, Gallagher, Vogel, Brown - there are 4 straight away who we wouldnt even notice had gone and it would save us £70k a week/ £3.5m a year. You then have RSC set to go on £65k a week - replace him with no more than a £50k a week player and there is another £15k a week saved. You could then also consider the likes of Derbyshire, Tugay (Have the legs gone?), Reid.
T4E Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I'd give Tugay a coaching contract but keep his registration on just in case.

Hughesy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Ooijer & Mokoena are both out of contract in the summer anyway so both will go and save us a further £50k a week-ish!
Bennisfromheaven Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 We should be expecting big chances this summer, there is a new manager & alot of players out of contract, so it is time to begin to rebuild! Relegation or not! This should start with a couple of good young midfielders, who we can expect to either be here for a good few years or make a profit from if sold to a bigger club! Wages for these players should not be too much initially which should help the accounts however we should expect to pay large fees for players with big potential! One of the most exciting teams we had over the past few years were built around Duff, Dunn & Jansen. Had Mark Hughes been in charge at this time i feel that we would have achieved even more than the carling cup win & 6th in the league! But the one problem is, this is not sams style! he is not known for youthful sides, so can we expect mersonaries & players that we cant feel there is a sense of purpose to in the future? I hope not!

Warnock can go aswell if Rovers can get a decent amount for him. We've so many to offload we could end up looking like a footballing version of Woolies.
Craigman Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Ooijer & Mokoena are both out of contract in the summer anyway so both will go and save us a further £50k a week-ish! I thought Mokoenasigned a new contract. He did I see to the end of this season ! My mistake. Sorry Hughesy.

Oklahoma Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 If we stay up, players like Rigters, Gally, Andrews, Treacy, Vogel, Reid should be sold or released. If we go down, Santa, Samba, Pedersen, Warnock might be sold. In any case, we should keep Givet, let Simpson and Villanueva go back to their clubs. Ooijer should go back to Holland and Tugay should retire. Mokoena should sign a new deal.

Oklahoma Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 If he is used as a defensive midfielder, he could be useful for us. And since I suspect that with Sam, we will play a lot 4-5-1, he should be useful.
JAL Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 if we go down i think we could loose more as well, Samba, Benni, Gamst, Emerton e.t.c. The scariest thing about the club at this moment in time was watching the young lads in the reserves on monday night at Ewood seeing who was coming through the ranks, nobody has said anything about the depressing lack of talent on show yet there was over 500 there.
dopper69 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Should we stay in the Premier League (which I am confident we shall) we need to have a cull of players who are not up to standard. In no particular order this is who I think should go and for how much. Ooijer (free) wages must be around 20k a week Mokoena (free) wages must be around 15k a week Simpson (loan expire) Tugay (player/coach) perhaps pay as you play deal? Vogel (minimal fee) wages must be around 30k a week Reid (minimal fee) is he even capable of getting out of bed without breaking something? Wages must be around 20k a week. Andrews (1 million) must be on around 10k a week Derbyshire (1.5 million) must be on around 15k a week The above would allow us around 150k a week to attract new players. I think getting rid of those eight to bring in five new members of the squad who are younger, fitter and hungrier would be a massive boost for the squad.
Hughesy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I dont think you are being realistic with wages dopper. I know Gallagher is on £20k a week - so i cant see the likes of Derbyshire, Mokoena or Ooijer on the same or less. Im sure Derbyshire will be pulling 25k, along with £30k ooijer and £20k ish mokoena
gumboots Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 The scariest thing about the club at this moment in time was watching the young lads in the reserves on monday night at Ewood seeing who was coming through the ranks, nobody has said anything about the depressing lack of talent on show yet there was over 500 there. I saw it but was depressed enough about the first team and thought other fans were not to want to say that it was the worst I'd seen from our reserves in a while. I don't go to games regularly but only when it's at Ewood but we usually have something to be encouraged by. I saw nothing although some of our fringe players had played at the weekend so weren't included and others have gone on loan.
herbergeehh Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I can't believe someone who's watched Rovers at all this season would even consider not giving Tugay an extended deal. Player/coach seems reasonable, as does 'pay as you play', but not keeping him registered for No Midfield Rovers is just insane - even at 39. As for us going down, I would think about five to ten of the players below will stay if that happens: 1 Paul Robinson Goalkeeper 2 Andre Ooijer Defender 3 Stephen Warnock Defender 4 Christopher Samba Defender 5 Tugay Kerimoglu Midfielder 6 Ryan Nelsen Defender 7 Brett Emerton Midfielder 8 David Dunn Midfielder 9 Roque Santa Cruz Striker 10 Benedict McCarthy Striker 11 Vincenzo Grella Midfielder 12 Morten Gamst Pedersen Midfielder 13 Zurab Khizanishvili Defender 14 Johann Vogel Midfielder 15 Aaron Mokoena Defender 16 Steven Reid Midfielder 17 Keith Andrews Midfielder 18 El-Hadji Diouf Striker 19 Carlos Villanueva (on loan from Audax ) Midfielder 21 Gael Givet (on loan from Marseil ) Defender 24 Keith Treacy Midfielder 25 Alan Judge (on loan to Plymth ) Midfielder 26 Julio Santa Cruz Striker 27 Matt Derbyshire (on loan to Olympk ) Striker 29 Martin Olsson Defender 30 Jason Roberts Striker Just a wild guess of course. But we could never pay wages to people like Benni, Emerton, Nelsen - and most of our players would strengthen teams in the Premiership one some level.
tony gale's mic Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 If we went down I think Roberts would be excellent in the Championship, we should try our best to hang onto him.
