tony gale's mic Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I remember very similar statements being made about Benni McCarthy not so long ago. Simple fact is - We won't be able to sign anyone near Roque's quality. Keep him. What - someone who scored 31 in 155 games in the Bundesliga prior to joining us? I'd say we probably could. Remember even Michael Ricketts has had one excellent Premier League season.

RibbleValleyRover Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 What - someone who scored 31 in 155 games in the Bundesliga prior to joining us? I'd say we probably could. Remember even Michael Ricketts has had one excellent Premier League season. His head has been turned by the speculation, it was also clear that Ince played him injured/not fully fit (Dunny came out and said that this was the case). Once the window closes and if he does end up staying, i get the impression he will knuckle down and give his all in order to keep us up. Even though he has been publicising his desire to move to City well known he hasn't said anything disrespectful about the club.
philipl Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I am amazed that anyone can fail to appreciate that Roque is anything other than sheer class. He certainly was not looking remotely disinterested in either the second half of the Bolton game or the second halfr of Boro. Kuranyi is an astonishing name to crop up at this late stage. I will be stunned if we can go from flash to bang in the tiny amount of time left. £20m for Roque is hardly a blowing us out of the water bid so I'd expect Rovers to be relaxed about not taking it.

Or he could have a similar performance level as his entire career before last season and not contribute very much to our relegation cause, and not selling him could both stop us getting someone better in and cost us at least £7-8 million.
blue and whites Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 i'm interrested in what the price for kuranyi would be...
spencey7 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Remember even Michael Ricketts has had one excellent Premier League season. Riiiggghhht... As philipl points out, Santa Cruz is pure quality - technique, touch, vision, heading, finishing, he's got the lot. With a few yards more pace he would be a key player for a Champions League side, no doubt. He may have had his injury problems, but we'd be kidding ourselves to think we'd end up with a better striker by 5pm tomorrow if we sell Roque.
philipl Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Independent- Spurs clinch Keaner return for £15m. So that's Spurs out of the Roque hunt presumably unless Defoe is a total crock. Quite a trick getting £5.3m from Liverpool for half a season of Keane. Spurs virtually not paying a penny because like the Defoe return, this is a debt cancellation deal. Raffa is the big winner in the LFC soap opera and Parry a huge loser. That is until they realise they actually need another striker to sustain chasing the Mancs! Billy Davies is apparently trying to take Mark Bunn on loan to Forest.
Hughesy Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Ok the reason I think we will stay up is because we are in much, much better form than most of the bottom half - See for yourself here I also think our goal difference if needed will be much better than those mentioned below and we seem to be much better organised now. Also we have quality in our squad, something which most of the teams around us seem to be lacking. Spurs, Sunderland, Newcastle, Bolton will all be fine. West Brom & Stoke are poor, boro & pompey are in terrible form, hull are dropping like a ton weight. Those 5 teams mentioned will all finish below us. Stoke - need to win 6 of there 7 remaining home games to stand a chance of staying up. Poor away! Hull - last time they won a game without an own goal in their favour was 25th October (Still also have Chelsea, Liverpool, Villa, Man U). If they sign Bent - they will stay up. Pompey - Last time they won was against us 30th November when we were awful, since then they have lost Defor & Diarra - They also still have Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, United & Everton to face. Boro - Last time they won a game was 9th November - Liverpool, United, Arsenal & Villa still all to come. Fans not behind them, team full of kids.... they are going to really struggle. West Brom - Bottom all season and will end up there. Not good enough, not got enough quality in their squad to stay in the league. Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool still to come.
philipl Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 This is three threads we have the perm any three from fourteen relegation debate going on now.
RibbleValleyRover Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Nicko, Al-Mohammadi is still coming out to the press saying he will be signing soon, heard anything new on this possible transfer?
tony gale's mic Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Gutted. Personally I have noone from here on ignore, I find it a little sad that people can find the footballing opinions of others that offensive. Maybe they ought to get out more.. Anyway back on topic after Tris tried to draw me into a slanging match: I'm not saying we should definitely sell Roque, but if we get £20m offered for him I think we should seriously consider selling him. Had we been in a situation where he was our star player then it would have been different. I just get the sneaky feeling we could strengthen our position and get more money, rather than hang on to a player who has a very good chance of having an average second half of the season for us and will most likely want to leave in the summer for considerably less money anyway. The timing is an issue though...but hopefully the scouts will have a fair idea about whether any potential replacements would be suitable and cost effective.

Any money made from anywhere will be swallowed up into the internal funding of the club. We may see a little cash in transfer money, but not much. The rest will go on everyday stuff.
bigbrandjohn Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Contrasting reports on the Keane deal http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/...bbie-Keane.html
philipl Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Contrasting reports on the Keane deal http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/...bbie-Keane.html That is the earlier report- most of the papers are reporting the deal got concluded at about 11pm- the time that report was filed. There was a big wobble at the Liverpool end after the deal had in fact pretty well been done yesterday morning.

67splitscreen Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Martin Jol, to spuds 16.59. Spurs reunited, or is it friends......
emerton Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Kuranyi is hardly a gamble, he is proven quality. If we were to sell Roque I couldn't think of a better player to replace him with like for like I agree - Kuranyi is a very good player and it would be a coup to get him.
roversmum Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Not on topic, but why do folks feel the need to quote posts that are directly above theirs?
Wolverine Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Good point mum, i pointed out in the web sites thread that this didnt and still doesnt help the server load.
herbergeehh Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Kuranyi is a great name, he's got all the qualities we need. Perhaps Nicko can tell us whether this have legs?
Captain Spaulding Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 I live in London, which is heavily snowed in at the moment, London City and Stanstead are closed, with Heathrow down to one runway. Could potentially have a problem with deadline day medicals or foreign transfers (for Southern based teams anyway?) Just a thought. JW should fire up the Rovers Speedboat in case we need to make a quick trip to Russia!
hawkiiz Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 what a terrible story to read on a monday morning about emerton So will we be doing any panic-buys then? this day is scary!
Guest Kamy100 Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Very bad news about Emerton, makes even more important that we sign another midfielder.
Plastic Head Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Emerton has been pants all season. Give someone else a go on the right.
philipl Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Very bad news about Emerton, makes even more important that we sign another midfielder. Agreed. I think Zoro is off because of work permit issues. Now we have both Bolton and ourselves desperately looking for midfielders in the snow. The news wires have gone silent on Kuranyi and Pogbyanik. So we have in effect at the moment: Out - Derbyshire and Emerton In- Givet and Diouf If Al-Muhammadi were not playing a Cup Final today etc etc but he seems a no go unless he can be made a free agent somehow.
