...interesting suggestion from someone that Samba could play defensive midfield...quite a good thought.

I'm not sure that he possesses the range of passing, speed of thought or vision required. This is something that should be tried close season not mid season in a relegation battle. One of the biggest criticisms of GS and PI was playing players out of position.

Hmmm I agree don't think Samba in the middle would work. For starters his main attribute is his height so why take that away from the defence where he cuts out a lot of crosses? Although he seems quite happy on the ball, I'm also not sure he posses the passing skills or the acceleration required for a defensive mid (he's fast once he gets going but has no burst of pace what-so-ever).

Nicko,

Benjani would be a good shout but I rather feel Sam will go for the Davies/Beattie type, the Stoke move is on hold I understand and wonder if Sam is looking for a replacement for Rocky.

Beattie is not slow, good dead ball player and is good in the air!!

I wonder!

Beattie's Stoke move is taking time because he has yet to commit to a £30,000-a-week contract for 2 and a half years...and his fee is £3 million.

You could do better - and cheaper. Who for example?

Panic buy if ever I heard one.

The striker I hear you are sniffing around is a better idea than Beattie...

I would hope with RSC potentially leaving that Big Sam would be looking at a few strikers, if RSC goes do you think he'll just settle with Benni and Roberts up front or buy someone to go straight into the starting 11

Nicko, Any truth in the Jones story to Villa? I had a slight hope that we might get him if/when RSC left to city, from what I've seen of him i think he could be an awesome player and a realistic target for us.

yeah jones would be a class signing - but why would sunderland sell to a relegation rival?!

i always fear playing sunderland when he plays

Well we'd have 10-15mil to tempt them with and money talks in these times, they spent a lot with Keane, maybe they need some back?? Not sure we'd compete with a club at the top end though with european football.

How about Nugent from Pompey? hasn't had a look in since joining them.

I love Kenwye Jones, not sure if he would get us enoug goals just yet though, anyway Sunderland don't want to sell Diouf to a relegation rival, they certainly wouldn't sell one of their best players. In todays market Jones would be probably somewhere close to £15 million unless they go down. Too much for one player.

Can't see Portsmouth selling Nugent, they've let Defoe go and now lack options upfront. He's also probably a relatively low wage earner and is an excellent championship striker as a backup plan if they do go down.

I was quite keen on Doyle but Coppell will be reluctant to sell and I'm not sure if he's actually that good.

Nice to hear we can do better than Beattie for £3m but with prices as high as they are these days it would be interesting to see who.

Jones is an utterly fantastic player - better than Cruz imo - but his injury record is so poor you cannot lay out the 15m that Sunderland would ask for. And they probabaly wouldn't need to sell anyway, and we would not offer the wages or the European football to make Jones agitate for a move.

If he stays fit he will be the Champions League within two seasons. It is a certainty Chelsea or Liverpool will pick him up. He just needs to avoid the lucratively tempting, yet career destroying, move to either Newcastle or Spurs.
