dopper69 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a mountain bike (mainly for downhill). Im a complete amatuer really and looking for a simple bike which could be easily modified if I get any more serious. Budget would be a max of £400. Any ideas where / what I should be looking for??

Flopsy Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 depends where you live. Charnock Richard Cycles (Buy a Bike) so you can give a number of bikes a try. I'd recommend that you get one with only front suspension. as ive found rear suspension isnt great for anything other than hardcore downhill
Al Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Try 'On Yer Bike' at Roe Lee. Michael will give you all the advice you need and sell you the bike that best suits your requirements.
1864roverite Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I have a realtively new mountain bike, mans size that needs a wee bit of attention and a new front wheel, would save you a few bob if you would like it at a reasonable price. New front wheel and tyre and a break cable I thnk is all that is required. pm me
allrovertheworld Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Been riding bikes since I can remember and for the money you are willing to spend I would advise a Specialised Hardrock Comp. Awesome bike for the money £390. You need to ride them before hand though as its a personal thing. I have a Specialised Rockhopper and I am more than happy with it.

Awesome bike for the money £390. You need to ride them before hand though as its a personal thing. I have a Specialised Rockhopper and I am more than happy with it. I've been looking at the Rockhopper as well as the Hardrock (also seen a hardrock sport, brand new for £240!). Both look pretty decent. The reviews I've been reading are leaning me towards a Specialized model to be honest. Apart from regular servicing, have you found any problems etc - I've read that the stock forks can be succeptable to damage? This one has caught my eye : http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails...p;categoryID=60 Not sure if it's a bit too 'hardcore' for my first real mountain bike though? Which is why I'm also keping my eye on this one: http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/productDetails...p;categoryID=60 Forgot to mention my budget has got to get me a helmet etc too (didnt realise how expensive these bloody were!)
Flopsy Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 you order online, you'll have to put some of it together. For your first bike, get it from a shop

Both good bikes, they have sound frames and that what you need to be looking for. For good frames you can't beat Specialised (i don't work for them honest), main reason is they are manufactured in USA so not like the cheap asian options that many are going with. I haven't had any problems with my bike so far not sure what forks come with the above options but mine are Rock Shox and are great. Maybe look at last yeras models for a cheaper and better bike as they don't actually change the spec that much. Like many have mentioned you need to ride the thing, have a reet good feel.
broadsword Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I wouldn't recommend mounting bikes, you'll only end up in trouble. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgo...est/7095134.stm
