[Archived] 30 Things To Do Before You're 30

Recommended Posts

So I turned 25 in January, and since then have been meaning to make a list of 30 things I want to do/achieve in the 5 years I have before turning 30. I have between 5 and 10 myself that I know I want to do, and have been Googling for ideas on the others, but most similar lists seem to be full of silly things like "lick the terminals on a 9volt battery" or "write off a car". Not exactly what I was looking for.

So, has anyone else ever made a list like this? Or even if not, any decent, relatively substantial/worthwhile ideas that could be included?

What have you already come up with?

1. Achieve atleast a brown belt in Ju Jitsu

2. Have a golf handicap of 10 or less

3. Learn to speak fluent Spanish

4. Read War and Peace

5. Visit Australia

6. Be able to play Maggie May on guitar

7. Get married

8. Have a child

9. Watch Rovers away in Europe

10. Put $1000 on red in a casino in Vegas

11. Drive in a foreign country on the wrong side of the road

12. Walk the Great Wall of China

Thats in no particular order. I've dabbled with 1 and 2 for a while but intend to now start taking them seriously. 3 is going to be a tall order.

I had intentions of them all being big and long term but I don't think thats possible.

Jump out of a plane (with parachute obviously)

You must be joking!!

Apply for the management position at a premier league football club

Thats kinda where I got this idea from - the guy who had this on his list and applied for the Boro job. Bellamy11 has applied for the Rovers job a couple of times and I doubt I could do it as funny as he did so I'll have to leave that one.

"No Deal" on deal or no deal

"Go on a gameshow" is actually not a bad one - you looked like you had fun!

Iv applied for deal or no deal - probably wont get on. Not a bad idea Tugay - I might do one too, im 25 also.

Maybe make a career thing in there - i.e. be on x amount by the age of 30. Maybe age for wage - £30k? (Unless your already past that?)

Add some more danger seeking things like ski dive, bungee jump etc.

Also have you got a woman your planning making a honest woman of or do you have to find her first too?

Now this is not me, it is honestly a friend, but two of theirs was to pay for sex, and be paid for sex.

Marriage being the normal way of paying for the first! Second is a little more tricky in the heterosexual world.

Oh and most important of all ........ give up smoking!!

Deal or No Deal would be great but how do these people get all that time off work?

I'm self employed and without being crude I bring in a fair bit more than the figure you mentioned. As it currently stands I want to do what I'm doing for as many years as possible, I have no interest in promotions or advancement of any kind. I did wonder how I could turn that in to a goal for the list but didn't get anywhere, its not particularly exciting sounding.

I need to look in to the bungee/parachute thing because while they would make great additions, I'm a complete wimp when it comes to heights.

I recently split up with a long term partner and am seeing someone new. Not thinking about those things too much but I would definitely like to be there by the time I'm 30.

I can promise you will never forget your first (and probably only) bungee jump. Scared to death followed by massive exhilaration

I can't see 9 happening within the next 5 years!

Magnificent post

I'd give 7 & 8 a miss as it involves someone else. The list is something you have got to do yourself and 7 & 8 are not really things that you can tick off and say that you have done them. They both take a bit more long term committment.

No 9 is not up to you. But if you want to cheat a bit, The Reebock is technically in Europe....

I'd add climb Ben Nevis, Sca Fell Pike, & Snowdon.

Maybe you may want to substitute some of the "I've done this" things for some "I've done this, but I don't want to talk about it, thanks." Do a bit of social/charity work. Maybe help a few people who have literacy problems or something like that.

Just my suggestions.

All the best in whatever you choose to do.

Back pack around the world for a couple of years.

You'll make lifelong friends, see amazing places, wet yourself, xxxx yourself, and when you're back home you'll say, "remember when....." and generally have an experience that can't be got by using travel agents.

Yeah, you can do most of the things on that list and then some more if you do that.

1. If that's your bag do it !

2. Definite because golf doesn't get any easier as you get older. Wonderful game.

3. Why ?

4. If you start now you might finish by the time you're 40.

5. Don't bother - horrible climate and full of flies.

6. Not a bad choice, but can you do his inimitable voice ?

7. No, no, no ! Far too young and more likely to last if you marry later.

8. As above

9. Might have a long wait for that one but if we survive this season Allardyce is quite capable of getting us there.

10. Definite. One of the world's must-see places.

11. Over-rated. Foreign drivers are worse than here.

12. Definite, though as one West Brom player on a 1970s visit said, "If you've seen one wall you've seen them all."

If I were your age again (I wish !) I'd walk from John O'Groats to Land's End for charity. Great way to see our wonderful country (amazing how many people have travelled the world yet don't know what our own country has to offer), plus you'd be raising money for a good cause.

Good luck !

A few I've managed:

1. Spend a long weekend in New York.

2. Climb the Eiffel Tower.

3. Climb the 3 Peaks (thats Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales).

4. Climb Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell.

5. Go swimming in the sea off the Gower Peninsula.

6. Go swimming in Lake Windermere.

7. Fell walking in the Lake District in a snowstorm in mid-January.

8. Turn down the opportunity to become financial controller at Turf Moor.

Thanks for the responses guys, some great ideas and I'm now just about in to the 20's, I'll post the list again a bit later.

You've got my thinking twice about 7 and 8, for the reasons you mentioned. The only thing is I've always really wanted to have done both of those and be settled down by the time I'm 30. Not really sure why now I think about it. I've always thought I didn't want to be an old father, I'd like to be able to enjoy time with my children when they're in their teens and not be too old to share in some of their experiences.

Is the Ben Nevis/Sca Fell Pike/Snowdon climb what they call "doing the 3 peaks"? Someone else mentioned it to me in those terms, sounds interesting.

You have not got a broncos trip down

Great shout, can't believe I missed that. It's on the list.

I'm sure thats an incredible experience Dave but I could just never do that. The idea of slumming it around a country, living out of a bag, living in hostels, spending hours and hours on buses/coaches..........definitely not for me. In addition to that I've worked very very hard in my career to get to a position I am not comfortable with. One of my main considerations of the list was to be able to complete these 30 things without sacrifice all I've worked for.

1. If that's your bag do it !

3. I've always fancied living in Spain when I'm older, so I'm thinking that would be a big step towards it.

6. Not a chance, I wish. Cracking song though.

11. Something I've always been apprehensive about, so I'd like to be able to say I've done it and survived.

I intend to put one endurance type thing in there and tie it in with some fundraising, like the walk you mention, the 3 peaks thing, London marathon or something else similar. Got thinking about Kilimanjaro actually recently, if all the celebs can do it it can't be that hard!
