I haven't read exactly what Nicko said due to time constraints right now but didn't Hull and Burnley try and sign Christian Vieri last season (08/09 season). He could be the mystery man but he is way past his sell-by date :(

i wonder if Enrico Chiesa might be worth a go.

He's 38 and playing Italian non-league! We'd be better of tempting Shearer out of retirement.

Sam said he wants to bring in more youthful players so I wouldn't expect him to do what he did at Bolton with regards to signing old 'stars'. Even in those days I think Chiesa might have been a bit too old!

ALLARDYCE TURNS ATTENTIONS TO FRANCE

By Ian Parkes, PA Sport

Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce is poised for a double raid on Marseille once the French league season ends this weekend.

Allardyce, trying to tie up a permanent deal for another Marseille player in centre-back Gael Givet following his recent loan spell at Ewood Park, is currently being linked with a move for Argentinian defender Renato Civelli.

However, the French club's Cameroon international Modeste M'Bami is potentially on the move to Rovers as a replacement for club legend Tugay.

The defensive midfielder's agent, Jean-Christophe Thouvenel, has confirmed Rovers are in the hunt for M'Bami, who is available for nothing as he is out of contract this summer.

``There is real interest from Blackburn, and we can call it mutual as Modeste would welcome the possibility of joining them this summer,'' said Thouvenel on www.setanta.com.

``Moving to England attracts him and Blackburn are apparently interested in his profile - a sentinel in front of the defence, with an athletic impact.

``But I must say a Spanish club are also keen on his services. It is another option, but he is happy with the Blackburn possibility.

``Modeste is a free agent. There's nothing to pay for him, no transfer fee, and in terms of a work permit, he has a French passport, so everything is fine.''

Allardyce is determined to beef up his defence after losing Andre Ooijer to PSV Eindhoven, whilst Zurab Khizanishvili is currently in talks with Galatasaray.

I agree with everyone else that this is all very exciting... the prospect of us spending a little bit of money & bringing in some players that are of a decent standard. M'Bami & M'Bia are both good players, thats Civelli chap seems like he could (at the very least) provide good cover accross the back line & it looks like it will be the same strikers we were linked with back in January... Pogrebnyak (quality)... Kuranyi (quality)... Dzeko (young, talented & exciting prospect)... but for me the most exciting of all is Matias Fernandez. I saw him in a few televised games when he played for Colo Colo in the Copa Sud-Americana, and he looked a real talent, only 17 at the time, but he had a good turn of pace & some serious skill, he could pass the ball & dribble well, in the games I saw him play, he looked like he was in control & totally dominated the opposing team from an attacking point of view. He is certainly quicker & stronger than the dearly departed Carlos Villanueva & from what I have seen of him in the past, a better player all round... in my eyes, this kid could be the replacement for Tugay... a very diffrent player, but still his replacement. We will never find the like of Tugay again but I think if we sign Fernadez, it could prove to be a very good bit of business.

We need a midfielder who will not only chip in with the odd goal, but will get around the box & unlock defences... this would be the ideal signing for that more attack minded midfield role.

If we dont get him... we should buy Juan Roman Riquelme from Boca!!! ;)

This could well work in our favour, this supposed negotiations with Marseille. We good at the way we conduct our business, when approaching clubs for their players so we certainly building a solid relationship with them.

how can Modeste M'Bami be a replacement for Tugay, Surely hes more of a replacement for the axe.

we need a creative player like Fernandez to replace Tugay.

Fernandez doesn't play anywhere near where Tugay used to, they're at least 20 yards apart in terms of area of the pitch. M'Bami sounds quite a natural replacement from what I've read of him.

With regards to Mokoena, I don't think he needs replacing as such. Grella can be the new Axe in terms of just being there to stop the opposition, we need more creative players instead.

It wont be Fernandez, we have already dismissed that link.

Its great to see us moving so quickly on all these deals - Sam doesnt mess around does he!! Hope it keeps up to this pace.

Wonder what Tuncay would be like playing in midfield, rather than attack like at Boro. He would be well worth £4-5m.

is M'Bami a creative player ?

Can't say I've seen him play but Wikipedia says this:

"M'Bami is a physically strong player with good technical skills. He is known as a playmaking central midfielder, who likes to come forward when possible."

Sounds just what we need if it can be relied up on.

Edit: I'm sure Tuncay has played on the wings quite often for Middlesbrough this season. He'd excellent on either the right or left for us, especially in a front three.

M'Bami is a straight forward defensive midfielder... I'm not sure if Grella is Sam's type of player... If he's looking at all these midfield options then I think Grella's days might be numbered.

Fernadez is the way forward from a creative midfield point of view... M'Bami & M'bia... Tuncay is a possibility but his wages will be the stumbling block, as im sure his old club in turkey would have him back & pay good money for him.

Going off that description he sounds like a box-to-box midfielder, which would be perfect.

Wikipedia said somthing similar about that Castillo that everton signed last season... in fact it described him as a 'World Class' midfielder... He was total babber!!!

I dont believe what it says... he's a defensive midfielder, that is reasonably good on the ball & can pick a pass... not very creative though!
