Is there any reason to believe that Fernandez would be anything other than Carlos Villanueva Mk II? I know that Fernandez has played in Spain, but I remain skeptical. :tu:

I do think that playing regularly in Spain will have helped him both phsically nd technically

fair 'nuff, haven't seen him play yet

I saw him play in televised copa-sudamericana matches a few years ago for his old club colo colo... he was quality then, a cut above the others around him. He is certainly faster, taller & more physical than Villanueva, but in terms of premiership physicality, i think it would take him a few months to adapt, this boy is very good though, just remember that a few years ago Wigan loaned a small & quick winger from Villareal... and now he's being touted for a move to Man Utd for £16m.

If rovers manage to sign Matias Fernandez... I would be delighted... and after watching him, im sure the fans that haven't seen him will understand... get on youtube & watch some of the goals he's scored, theres one where he takes the ball from his own half, past the majority of the opposing team & chips the ball over the keeper, few years back when he was still in chile, proper class!!!

I have just watched that 8 min video of Matias Fernandez, it has helped me come to the conclusion that even if we could sign him, I dont think we will. Has Sam Allardyce ever signed a player like him, and where would he fit in the team???

He is class, but he's not a striker, and as a midfielder, he wont provide much defensive cover... maybe in either a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3... I suppose we have played like that towards the end of the season, but I think that Sam Allardyce will look to spend the big money on players that are less of a 'risk'.

I'd still like to see him in a Rovers shirt next year... I'm not sure it will happen though!!!

We can all voice our opinions of one player or another, fancy names etc but I would be happy for players, known or unknown of the quality and consistency of Givet and only Sam knows how he is going to play or planning to play next season.

There are lots of good player around who dont always get the recognition they deserve, I remember Dalglish commenting once on Mark Atkins who was playing alongside lots of 'Name' players, he said he was a rock and a midfielder capable of getting the ball forward early!! Atko was a good pro but not a 'name' player.

I would settle for that type of player and the consistency that goes with it!!

Read something on a LET billboard this morning about further developments on Joey Barton.

Personally i think the guy is scum and the 10 foot bargepole rule applies, just another reason for more people to dislike our club if he signs.

Could anyone who could be arsed buying a paper please shed some light on the situation?

Hopefully just a take on this:

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has no intention of leaving the club over the summer, and according to his agent, he wants to honour the three years left on his contract.

(Full story: The Guardian)

via BBC Gossip & Transfers

That means

1. his agent has told him that nobody else will pay him 60pk.

also

2. Under the two birds with one stone theory, the agent is giving NUFC the opening bid in any negotiations to pay up his contract and offload him as they desperately need to do.

hmmmm re: 2 ...Joey Barton might be come very cheap if he can negotiate NUFC paying half his salary or similar as LUFC had to do with Robbie Fowler at Citeh. I'd imagine SA would love to sign Barton under that sort of arrangement simply to shove one right up fat ashleys huge arse and see NUFC suffer a death from a thousand cuts as they sink down the divisions through paying off numerous ridiculously overpaid Carlos Kickaballs. Funny when considering the Prem how so few seem to have paid even lip service to the predicament of LUFC isn't it?

Got to say...Joey Barton on loan at half-wages [£30,000-a-week] for a season is not a bad idea.

In terms of ability he is miles better than anyone you have.

And taking him on loan would cover you against any of his nonsense inside or outside the club.

There's a very good player there if someone could keep him right.

He was Man City's best man before he left and an England international.

Where else do you get one of them for £1.6 million-a-season?

I've argued similar on the other thread, but the majority of posters' minds are made up already.

I would disagree that Barton is that good Nicko. He caught the eye when he first came on the scene at Man City, agreed. He's done very little on the field since then, - I reckon he's very overrated as a player. I know lots of season ticket holders at City and they've always said he's not as good as some make out.

As for being better than anything we currently have - too true. We've had better midfielders in the lower divisions. That argument wouldn't persuade me to go for an idiot like Barton, Nicko.

I'd agree Nicko if he were the same player who was Man City's best and edging into the England side but he isn't.

Surely he will never be given a chance for England (that would be some Lazerath act); he hasn't played well for the Magpies on the odd ocassion he's been on the pitch so the question would be "what is the motivation for him?". Even if he had a couple of brilliant seasons he's blown his England chance and he won't get a "big" club coming in for him. He'd become just another football mecerenary which isn't what Rovers need.

Hope he takes him turmoil to Spurs - can't see him lasting long with 'arrys no nightclub rules.

First things first, I don't think it is likely to happen - but I am sure Sam has thought about it.

I have been a Barton fan for some time but he does let you down too often.

However - as a loan signing - it's relative low risk.

If you look around at what there is in the market within your budget it is not a daft plan.
