In all fairness with the Barton thing I only have one word....Savage....many people had their conceptions about the man and I think he played a vital part in the team whilst he was here. I do not agree with things Barton has done on and off the pitch however I do feel that maybe he is a player that would do well in the centre of midfield.....I know we already have el spit that people are mixed on......but barton for the price or even a loan deal that Nicko mentioned would be a bad coup for us, also I would like to see a move for a player like Kanu or Sean Davis from pompey, even David Healy

Got to say...Joey Barton on loan at half-wages [£30,000-a-week] for a season is not a bad idea.

In terms of ability he is miles better than anyone you have.

And taking him on loan would cover you against any of his nonsense inside or outside the club.

There's a very good player there if someone could keep him right.

He was Man City's best man before he left and an England international.

Where else do you get one of them for £1.6 million-a-season?

We should buy Alexander - Barton's clearly not as good - he only scored 1 goal last season and 1 goal the season before <_<

Buy Barton and it's bye bye team spirit and bye bye dignity

I dont think El Hadj Diouf adds to team spirit, at least Robbie Savage was up for a laugh in the right spirit, and showed a great desire, not many people feeling enamoured with El Hadj behind the scenes from what I hear unless Philipl can add differently. B)

On the contrary you only need to see the way the players interact with him in the warm ups before games to see there are no problems (yet) with EHD.

Savage was no angel, but he wasn't the Antichrist either. Barton's a bad egg, that has continuously failed with every "last chance" he's been afforded. If signing a thug like Barton on loan is our only viable option, then Sam has some serious work to do in the scouting department...

A rare moment of good sense on Mr Barton.

A quality which Barton himself is 100% devoid of. Barton's recent playing appearance record is actualy worse than Dunn's- he has also had a bad injury as well as moronically unnecessary red cards and time at her Her Majesty's Prisons. Worth remembering that with hs track record, he is only bumping into one loud mouth who "fancies it" away from being put away again on remand.

Just like with Duffer, Barton is loyal to his fat Newcy contract knowing nobody will go anywhere near him on his current record and negligible value for money.

I believe lots of words were said by lots of people after the Stoke game but not aware of any issues with EHD.

Alexander is priceless and unavailable. Unfair to compare anyone to him. He plays every game. Can't think of too many anywhere who did the same last season.

Compare Barton with any of your current midfielders by all means...

How many of them played regularly and scored many last season? It is a very weak part of your squad.

Barton is better than Andrews, more mobile than Grella, fitter than Dunn or poor old Reidy, obviously he has not retired like Tugay.

So he has more to offer as a player than any of those.

It would all come down to controlling the stupid side of him.

Barton scored a few in his last season at Man City despite a few distractions.

There are obviously huge question marks about him, but a loan takes a lot of the risk out of that.

He is a high-energy type and does well in a 4-3-3.

Remember, Sam paid a fortune for him in a fee and wages just two years ago.

It's not a crazy thought.

Some good points raised about barton - but has this not already been ruled out by big sam.

I'm sure Alexander will be made up to finally become a one-season wonder at 57 or whatever he is

Comparing Barton with our current midfield is not really relevant is it. We all know we need to strengthen. The comparison is between Barton and who else we may strengthen with. And let's be perfectly frank Nicko his last man of the match performance was in Man City colours which will be getting on for 3 years ago by the time the season starts, and he's had two nasty injuries since then.

However, if we take your opinion that he is still good as fact (and let's face it you love Alexander so the jury's out on that one ;) ) then as always with Barton it comes down to the effect he has on the rest of the squad, the club and the fans, and whether he can stay on the pitch. After the 5 or 6 chances he's had I'd suggest not. I can think of better ways to waste £30k per week...

High energy, talked to City fans down here last crimbo, they spoke of him as always doing everything, involved in everything, yet nothing came of it, that was their viewpoint .

Any quality scouser surely is going to be playing for Everton or Liverpool, or at least began their career there, which asks big questions about Barton and Nolans ability - what did merseysides big two not like about these players.

In midfield we are desperately short so having just seen Lampard hit the back of the net can Barton do it?

Can you not see that nicko is winding people up? He is trying to see how many people he can convince that Barton would be a good signing. The Burnley fans would find it hilarious. We would move beneath them in one fell swoop.

No. I'm just hoping you sign good players so that you can keep out of trouble next season...and stay in touch with your neighbours.
