Commondore Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 I'd like to think our scouting under Hughes and Sam was/is much better than back then. I mean, who the heck would spend so much on a journeyman from Serie B like Souey did? De Pedro... meh. The exception that confirms the rule! I'll use Samba, Nelsen, Tugay, Roque and Benni as my counter examples! If the scouting/trialling is done properly then there are way more talent to be found on the cheap abroad than looking at cheap british players. That move has to be one of the more shady deals that took place during Souey's regime... How often does a Serie B club get that kind of money and still don't do squat with it afterwards? Agents, club-owners, fixers, lawyers and other middlemen up to one's ears in that one I would think...

Yeah but they were mostly Souness knee-jerk reaction signings.
nicko Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Why is Coyle still very short priced for the Celtic job ? Because Celtic have not moved for anyone else yet...
Guest benmaxwell Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Because Celtic have not moved for anyone else yet... So they have moved for Coyle and only Coyle. Thing that had me raised eyebrowed is the people at the top in Burnley said they would have Coyle tied down to a new contract at the end of next week. As far as i can tell, he hasn't signed anything and gone on holiday. He also point-blank avoided answering the, are you 100% certain your staying with Burnley question... Nicko, can you answer my questions from earlier this hour...
rovers1995 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Nicko, what about miguel veloso from sporting lisbon, he wants out. Any chance?
nicko Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 With regards to the exchange Nicko... Any chance we could see a return of Bentley... Any chance more then one player from Spurs could be involved? If so who would you guess other then Pascal Chimbonda. I don't see Bentley coming back - his wages are too big and so is his head. There could be other Spurs players being tossed around - it will be that kind of summer.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 sutty started life as a defender he didnt do to bad and didnt warhurst start as a defender he scored a lot also?..... Sutton - top class centre forward- very average defender down here. Warhust was a good shout- top class at both ends of the pitch and handy as a midfielder as well. I saw him play full back for Oldham and he was awesome. We never saw the best of him unfortunately, thanks to the broken leg
nicko Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Nicko, what about miguel veloso from sporting lisbon, he wants out. Any chance? Bolton tried to do it and it was quite a lot of money. Good player, but question marks over his price and whether he could hack the physical side over here.
rovers1993 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 nicko, overall out of all our targets right now are we going to get excited during the summer and get some quality players in or are we going to be worse off than where we were.
nicko Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 nicko, overall out of all our targets right now are we going to get excited during the summer and get some quality players in or are we going to be worse off than where we were. The squad needs a shake-up and plenty will be going...which is good in itself. It's going to be hard landing players this summer, so it's a test - but I think you will be in there pitching for plenty and have as good a chance of any of your rivals of landing them. No idea on numbers, but I would guess Givet plus five or six more - with even more going out.
rovers1995 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Nicko, I know you can't reveal the mystery striker, but will it excite us straight away or will we be helping him develop for a year or two then lose him to a big 4 side club?

I bet you were murder waiting for Xmas morning, leave the guy alone, we'll know soon enough.

Amo Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Five or six isn't that much, when you consider Ince signed the same number last year - (Robinson, Simpson, Andrews, Grella, Carlos, Fowler).
bennyboyt11 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Not in number no, but in quality it's a massive difference, if we sign 5/6 more of Givet-esque quality then I would be more than happy.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 If it's not been revealed on here then it's a shame it's not Taarabt who was being discussed a bit ago, he is just wasted at Spurs, he has immense potential.
Guest benmaxwell Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Nicko. What players do you expect to depart..?
bennyboyt11 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 But is it gonna be 5 or 6 quality players Can't say for certain, but with the board emphasizing reducing the wage bill and Sam himself stating about having a small squad, you would expect the dross to be replaced by a higher pedigree...
imy9 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Derby are a bigger club with better support and new owners. Can we have your suggestions instead of your criticisms imy? And your solution is eddie ..... Mine is not a criticism, it is merely stating the obvious. We have a minimum of £30 million coming into the club every season, 80% of which goes on wages of players and staff, thats £24 million, with a £6 million surplus, we also have revenue coming in from ticket sales, shirt sponsors etc. I see the benefit of reducing the wage bill I really do but surely we are not going to break the bank by spending £5-10 million on transfers. I know Phillip is really good with finances, any chance of further clarity?

Hopefully the latter - the best way for us to survive in the top league in the world. Take on hungry players who will do a good job for us in order to get a big move. Use the money to continue in the same manner and supplement with "free" signings of players further on in their careers. Any young player who joins us and expects to spend most of his career with us cannot be up to much.

I know Phillip is really good with finances, any chance of further clarity? Your figures are way out. The bottom club recieves a min of 40 million in TV money- Rovers will pocket arount 43 million. Turnover will be around 55 million- down a little from the last accounting year. Wages were a reported 39 million , however that was before the current cull of players wages ( Bentley, Vogel, Tugay, Mokeona etc). The board want the club wage bill reduced to 35 million- yet will are not willing to give the manager the recouped wage money to bolster his pitiful transfer budget. BTW PhilipL is good at finances- no doubt. However, he does chnge his forecast montly to fall in-line with board opinion.

How much did Pompey get for him £15 million plus
Guest benmaxwell Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 According to goal.com the figure for Derbs is in the region of £3 million: http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2009...matt-derbyshire As well as the Daily Mirror, the Daily Star has us linked with Faye: http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/82915/
modes98 Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 I've heard we are in for Elrio van Heerden, although I have never heard of him.
