Big Sam has quashed yesterday's newspaper tabloids which suggested he was facing a mass exodus.

"We are looking to build a squad here, rather than dismantle it, so no-one will be leaving this summer, unless I feel it is in the best interests of this football club"

Went on to say there will be some coming & going to rebuild, however stated "The plan is to build the team around some key players we already have here" and also said he is relaxed as most players are on good length contracts so he has nothing to worry about.

Civelli has declared his time at Marseille is over and he wants a move to England or Spain....

On that, any more news on M'bami? Last I heard Everton were sniffing around too...

I've often thought we should let lose a few red herrings - send a scout on a 'mission' publicising it widely, and heigh ho, 'Everton, Bolton and Spurs are also chasing the player'. Didn't Everton pick up that Castillo(?) dude we spurned last seaon and found him wanting? :closedeyes:B)

Plus it would match what Nicko was saying about the need for hush..... If Chelsea and Arsenal are interested and they found out he was avaliable, it would scupper our deal

I thought the need for hush was in case it goes t*ts up making Nicko look misinformed or like he was just teasing us. I can't seriously believe that if we are chasing this guy, other clubs with their legions of spies, contacts and even journalists wouldn't know about it whilst Nicko does.

Secondly, wouldn't it make more sense if the player in question/his agent/current club put his name out as surely it is in all their interest to start a bidding war. Even if this guy only has eyes for Rovers (which I doubt) it would at least give him more leverage when discussing wages.

The need for hush, hush was because other clubs are interested but dont know he is available.

As for putting the story out there to get more interest and gain more money - not all players are money grabbing tits like Lucas Neill

As crazy as it sounds he was my guess.

I know Coyle wont have looked at him but it does sound like a crazy SA signing.

He doesnt play for AC much and is at the end of his career.

Still very unlikely but.....................

Noticed yesterday in the paper that Gudjohnsen wants to return to England and was quoted as such saying it was "inevitable" and that he enjoyed his time here.

Another player I wouldn't mind at Rovers is Achillie Emana who plays for Real Betis in Spain (who just got relegated yesterday). He's a powerful quick and strong attacking midfielder and is exactly what we need in the middle of the park. Would be worth an enquiry at least I reckon.

That first sentence doesn't compute in my head. How can other clubs be interested but at the same time not know he's available, seems like a paradox to me???

If they're interested it doesn't take much to phone or fax his parent club and ask who would presumeably say yes as it is in their interest. If they're not asking then it implies they're not interested.

On the money thing, no not all players are like Lucash but most agents are and certainly his parent club would want as much money as possible. Think of it this way, it is in our interest to let everyone know that Olympicos has put in a bid for Derbs just in case another club want to come in and offer more, it would make no sense for us to do a "secret deal" as the only facation that wins in that scenario in the buying club.....

As for the player, even if he doesn't care about money, unless he's a life long Rovers fan, wouldn't he want to know if a so-called "more ambitious" club was interested?

....or am I missing something here?

Yes it only takes a phone call/ fax, but as everyone in world football is aware - most clubs dont do their business yet! We are trying to take an early move and it will be one which will be gutting for a few others who were interested if we pull it off.

As for Derbs - he has said it himself, Its either 1st team football with us or Olympiakos.

Comment typed here... Journo (not Nicko) comes on... Reads it, publishes it, other clubs are made aware of that players availability...

Think that was pretty much proved last week when on friday night i said i had heard we were interested in Matias Fernandez, then within 3 hours it had been published...

Does'nt sam apparantly have alot of contacts in France? If so maybe it is one of these contacts that have told him about Guillaume Hoarau avaliability. Is see this a Sam kind of signing,Hes strong, big, holds the ball up, like Kevin Davies.I think Owen Coyle might of enquired about this player when he played for Le Havre but got bullied out when PSV and Marseille came in for the player. It makes sense because PSV only brought him for €500,000 which at the time Burnley could afford.

The news about Givet signing a 4 year deal was also picked up from here and posted on several news websites - they even referred to it being 'leaked' at the awards evening ha ha!! It wasnt leaked, JW told 300 people in clear english what the case was.

B.R.F.C - Sheva i was referring to.

Yeah OK I can see that but my point is this guy can't be anyone's primary target otherwise they would have checked themselves. If David Moyes, for example, was tracking this guy he'd know just as much about his availability as Big Sam would and I doubt many (if any) managers use the tabloids for accurate information of player availability.

It sounds like more of a spite thing to me, in that a team didn't want a guy enough to check his availability, reads a story about him possibly moving to Rovers in the red tops then they decide they want him just because they don't want us to have the guy.

Furthermore, why is it in Nicko's interests to keep the story quiet? He prefers Burnely to us as far as I can see and he's a journo, it's his job to reveal news and as early as possible. I'm not buying this "I'm not going to tell you in case it screws up the deal for you guys" nonsense. Would you hold onto interesting information, and risk another journo printing the story first, for a club you don't support?

I'm just worried people are reading this stuff and thinking we've got some secret deal lined up that's going to blow the footballing world away when in reality we've probably just asked about a guy (who is probably decent granted), found out he's available and we're just doing the groundwork now. Nicko, I suspect, is not releasing the name as yet in case we don't follow up the lead rather than some protectionist policy in the interest of Rovers.

I guess "ROVERS SIGN MESSI" is a better scoop than "ROVERS SEND SCOUTS TO WATCH MESSI", don't you?

Quite wrong, Nicko and any reputable journalist needs info from his contacts, his contacts will say, yes, exclusive to you but I will give you the nod when!! thats how they build up the trust with contacts, thus Nicko and all the other journos will have their contacts and a mutual trust!! without that trust, you dont get the info you want!

OK that makes more sense but still wouldn't the "contact" (and I'm presuming it would be someone involved with Rovers internally) wait before they gave the information to Nicko? In other words, only give him information when they feel it's safe or the need to print it.

I take what you say about trust but that implies some kind of mutual benefit and I can only see nicko benefitting from gaining the information. The "contact" gains nothing so why would he feel the need to establish trust with Nicko?

At the end of the day, whoever he is can't be THAT in demand. Granted someone else could come in if they read it in the papers and thought they might put in a cheeky bid but it's not going to be some World beater than has been on other clubs' radars all season.
