alexanders Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Givet looks better at left back...Warnock was hit-and-miss in midfield. Stunned he got player of the year with Samba around. I can't say I agree with you there Mr Alan Nixon. I think Warnock is a better LB than Givet. He has more offensive qualities and had a great partnership with Gamst Pedersen. He also represents die hard attitude and deserved the player of the award! He scored a couple of great goals from MB postion and has a great engine.
Stuart Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Nicko, a bit left-field but I heard a Wigan fan call Talksport tonight saying that following Bruce's departure (and comments made about 'not wanting to beat Man U' last season - or words to that effect) that Dave Whelan should leave the club. Have you heard any noises about any division between Wigan Athletic FC and their owner? I'd love Whelan to sell Wigan and mount a takeover at Rovers. He'd fit the mould of the type of buyer Rovers would be looking for (in my opinion, of course).

I like Brucie but he moves around too much to ever be taken seriously. Whelan IS trying to lower his budget and would like to get some money back. He would also sell. But who is going to buy Wigan?
Backroom DE. Posted June 3, 2009 Backroom Posted June 3, 2009 I'd actually like to ideally see Samba and Givet in the centre, with Warnock on the left. Nelsen's not getting any younger and has been declining. I'm sure that injuries/suspensions will give him a fair amount of games anyway, the only issue is that he is currently captain, so we'd have to pick someone else as captain if Nelsen was given a bench position next year. Saying that, I expect the lineup to be RB - Nelsen - Samba - Warnock/Givet ... but if so, I don't know who out of Givet/warnock would be first choice at LB. I can't see either being happy with sitting on the bench and I don't think we should be looking at Warnock as a permanent midfield option. Someone in the back four has to be replaced if Givet is to play... it'll either be Warnock or Nelsen. The only other option is to sell Samba... but I'd be devastated if that happened.
nicko Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Gael Givet's deal is done. He will be officially a full-time signing on June 10 - the official date when his 'loan' expires. His terms are agreed, the agent is sorted. The lad is even off on holiday, happy in that knowledge. His kiddie seems to be well too, born over here where he is already settled. That is from 'le cheval.'

AJW Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 all the noises coming from the club when givet signed , was that warnock wouldnt be leaving ....but it did seem strange when we pay £3m + for a reserve left back / reserve centre back considering our financial position...its only my opinion , but warnocks best position is left back and warnock is our best left back what chance villa in for warnock now ?

No, it's a fair point you make.

Is it completely irrelevant that we have lost Ooijer off the books? Givet seems the natural replacement (and improvement) for the Dutch player imo.
tcj_jones Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Unless he can do an adequate job at right back, then I wouldn't agree with that, Rev. I agree that £3.4m is too much to be spending on a mere squad player and would expect him to be a regular fixture. I have a feeling that one of Nelsen / Samba will be dropped or, more likely, that Warnock will be played at CM.
AJW Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Is it completely irrelevant that we have lost Ooijer off the books? Givet seems the natural replacement (and improvement) for the Dutch player imo. apart from being completely different defenders , one is a right footed central defender who can play right back and the other if a left footed left back who can play play central defence!
jny Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I would of thought Givet would play LB and Warnock would move to CM and when Samba or Nelsen are injured Givet would move into CB and Warnock LB
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Is it completely irrelevant that we have lost Ooijer off the books? alexanders Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 We have this defence: Andrews (RB), Emo (RB), NELSEN (CB), SAMBA (CB), GIVET (LB/CB) and WARNOCK (LB) In addition to this Warnock/Andrews/Emerton can be used in midfield and Samba as a Striker. Which means that we have more versatility in the team than before. I agree with Rev that Givet is half a replacement for Ooijer.

As outstanding as nelsen and warnock have been for this club whether sam decides givets a center half or a left back he starts ahead of the pair of them every time. if warnock or less likely considering his age nelsen had to go this summer to lower the wages i would'nt be overly concerned as long as givet deal is tied up, in which case keeping the ever reliable khiz is a must.
AJW Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 i still think we need a proper right back , either loan or a freebie , just to provide back-up for emerton
gumboots Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 i still think we need a proper right back , either loan or a freebie , just to provide back-up for emerton And presumably to actually start the season because last time i heard an emerton interview he didn't expect to be playing till september
RevidgeBlue Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Scary post, makes you wonder how closely that the majority of people who post on here actually watch the game. Errr..........we've gained a versatile defender who can play either at full back or centre half and lost one as well! Givet is far better than Ooijer imo but I guess that's a subjective matter of opinion. They're obviously not clones of each other and whether they're left footed/right footed is splitting hairs somewhat imo as I expect with Simpson leaving cover will be brought in for Emerton anyway.
Cheeky Sidders Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 I don't know if there's any mileage in it but a mate of mine who has connections with Ewood said Sam Allardyce is considering a young Dutch midfielder called Juan Der Braa. Not sure where he's at but he's supposed to hold things up quite well and quite handy up front.

Does anybody know if Seiterides is still a target. I still think he is our best option, and capable option for right back. Ive also heard Ryan Taylor's name mentioned again, Nicko any more on those 2 names?
