Mozzer Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 if sam allardyce thinks alan smith will improve us and he signs him i will trust him...hes usually good in the market as shown at bolton and newcastle so i dont see why he wouldnt be at rovers.(obviously he did have some bad buys aswell like any other manager)... as a player alan smith for me is a better central midfielder then striker-when man utd used to play him there i thought he was really good...
tcj_jones Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Wouldn't Frazier Campbell make a quality free signing to replace Derbyshire? But he wouldn't be free though, would he? Unless you mean on loan?
Fife Rover Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Le cheval? Is that a French newspaper Great news! I think he meant to say it was from "la bouche du cheval"
Hughesy Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 But he wouldn't be free though, would he? Unless you mean on loan? £5m Campbell, £5m Derbyshire is what he meant....I Think
tcj_jones Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 Oh, I see. Well in that case, there is no way in hell that we'd get £5m for Derbyshire - probably nearer to £2.5 - 3 - and Campbell's wages would be far higher. Moreover, I cannot see either Campbell nor McCarthy being willing to sit on the bench and I cannot see either fitting a target man role that Sam would almost certainly employ.
Hughesy Posted June 3, 2009 Posted June 3, 2009 We have already turned down £3m, and we are asking for more - expect them to settle on £3.5-£4m. Campbell with only 1 year left on his deal could surely be signed for not much more than that amount. Yes he might be on an extra £10k compared to Matty.
Guest benmaxwell Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 £5m Campbell, £5m Derbyshire is what he meant....I Think Thankyou... I been hearing Manchester United will be looking for as little as £4 million for Frazier oweing to his short contract and less then spectacular form at Spurs during his loan. However his quality is there... We will end up getting around the £4 million mark for Derbs and we could easily put in a offer of £3 million with added incentives. I don't however think we would go for him. But it makes a good example of a striker in his early 20's... English prospect possibly going for a good price coinciding with his contract...

You might want to take an extra look at Allardyce's transfer dealings at Newcastle mate... Thankyou... EDIT: Grammar check.
ROVERS Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 oh please no Alan smith please!!!!!.......... we don't need "was" palyers, we need "is" players. I am ok with frazier campbell, but if Matty only worth 3 mill then campbell should not be worth anything higher then that. Anything below 3mil would be ok.
patrickvalery Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Alan smith 5 years ago would have been a great signing. But i suspect this is yet another case of lazy journalism. Campbell would be good. If Benni leaves (which wouldn't suprise or disappoint me) he would be ideal. Might perhaps fit the mould as the mystery sriker?? As far as Newcastle go, there are not many who i would consider. Attitude pending, Geremi would do well here. In surroundings which may be considered a little more humble than that of Newcastle he might just find his boro form again. I know he has been poor for the barcodes, but nobody can argue how well he performed at boro. How would anyone feel about Lee Catermole? With Bruce leaving he may consider a move. I really rate him. Would add some much needed steel to our midfield. I know people talk about Grella being our destroyer, but i can't get past his performance against Chelsea under Ince. Out tackled by Lampard over and over again and soon after conceeding a goal after he bottled yet another Lampard challenge he limped off. I don't think we've seen the best of him yet, but from what i have seen i don't think he's the answer as a combative midfielder. I think the managerial merry-go-round which Nicko mentioned yesterday may present some rich pickings. WBA's decent footballing side may dispand if Mowbray leaves. I'd happily take Brunt off their hands. Wigan will make changes too. Would N'Zobia be worth looking at even though he's relatively new in town??? Then of course Sunderland will inevitably make changes too. Richardson would probably cost too much, but could be worth enquiring about. I've said it before, but Southampton are hiding atleast two gems. Surman and Lallana would both be great additions. Especially Surman. Being left footed he would add some balance to the midfield and his eye for a pass is very impressive. He reminds me of a young David Dunn. Maybe not as robust as Dunny was, but good dribbler and forward thinking player.
Tyrone Shoelaces Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Alan Smith before the injury would have been a decent signing. Effectively that finished him as a top striker. As a midfielder he's a headless chicken. I wouldn't take him if he was free, there's better out there.
gumboots Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 How would anyone feel about Lee Catermole? Well, he's not a bad player but we'd definitely be struggling discipline wise. I don't know if it's a false impression but he seems to get sent off slightly more often than the average player.

EwoodGlory Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 The Smith article is in the Daily Star, so hopefully as usual that means it's nonsense.
bob fleming Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Sbragia.... Could turn up at Ewood or there is always his old job back at the Happy Days Cafe. Can't let that go without adding one of these:
Hughesy Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Lee Cattermole isnt good enough, he is slow in the tackle (hence the yellows & reds). No thanks! Alan Smith - Nicko any truth in this?
nicko Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 ALAN SMITH - Surely not. FRAIZER CAMPBELL - Was due to go to Wigan as part of the Valencia swap in the summer...on loan...that is now obviously not certain. Ok, but a little lightweight. DARRON GIBSON - Less likely to leave than others at Man U right now...Possebon is pencilled in to go out on loan. LEE CATTERMOLE - More likely to go to Sunderland...Bruce loves him. Good player.
Hughesy Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Nicko - can you check out the Smith story or do you know for a fact we are not interested?!
nicko Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Nicko - can you check out the Smith story or do you know for a fact we are not interested?! I will sniff around it, but it doesn't fit the profile of what is currently being chased. Newcastle are desperately trying to offload their players just now. He could even be given away...in that set of circumstances it could be right if he is free...but he is done. Think the story comes from his mate, who is close to some of the Yorkshire press. A quick check on the by-lines would confirm that source.
Hughesy Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Are Newcastle close to moving on any of their big wages? It would be great to see them struggle to sell people and still have a massive wage bill to pay in the championship.

Smith [if they can] - £3 million or so. That would be a decent start.

Maybe not as robust as Dunny was, but good dribbler and forward thinking player. Tend to agree with alot you post here PV especially with the youngsters at Southampton etc - think its in this area we should be looking to provide cover - Quality first eleven with decent prospects as back up Rev - partly agree to what you are saying with respect of Givet but I do feel he will be more of a starter rather than a versatile as jer was -especially if Warnock leaves. Find it extraordinary with some other posted comments. As for the players mentioned - Smith is not a midfielder ever!! in the month of Sundays - used to be decent when played up front and is good in the air (something we desperately lack up front) however as has been mentioned , if this is a goer and happens could well turn out to be the worst signing by Rovers in history especially considering his injury history. Warnock - certainly our best left back even with Givet - if he does leave with Givet the replacement - we need cover - Olsson is not good enough at LB but could prove useful/cover for the left of midfield. Decent left backs are few and far between - it would be very foolish to lose Warnock without having another LB lined up as 1st or cover. Derbyshire /Campbell - What is it with people I don't get it - dissing Derbyshire in favour of a player who is very similar in the way he plays ( without being played out of position) and would probably demand more in wages - how can we rate Derbyshire at the same value and sell and replace with a player very similar on probably more wages - doesn't make sense - would be ok if he is brought in as addition (ie if Benni/Roque leave) but don't see the point if its to replace Derbyshire at at a similar price. Only worth it if less value than Derbyshire if he goes. Brunt is certainly a good shout at WBA and I doubt it would break the books. Cattermole - not bad (discipline a worry) but surely we can do better.
EwoodGlory Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I wonder if anyone has tested the waters with them yet. I think Beye would be an excellent signing at right-back for us. The one player that stood out for them last season. Would they be in a position to turn down a £500,000 bid or lower? Just an idea.
nicko Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Beye is a good thought. However the Geordies will want a good fee for him.
