Anyone but that injury-prone thug! I can't stand him - and he's hardly done anything in the game for about 6 years.
joey_big_nose Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I can's see any way Smith would be a good buy. Poor goal scorer, injury prone, slow, ageing. It would require a Kevin Davies resurection of his career for him to succeeed.
alexanders Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Nicko, do you know if any English clubs are actually interested in Arango? Ready to move And sorry if it has been mentioned, but do anyone know anything more about who were monitoring last weekend in Spain?

Talented, left-footed, strong, bit of a character. Good signing for someone if the price is right.

nicko Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Have we been there? Don't think so...left wing does not seem to be a priority.
47er Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Its on the record that Allardyce wanted to sign Beattie. I'd guess he sees Smith as a similar type of player (and similar to Davies for that matter). The idea will be to land the ball on his head and for Smith to use his strength to get there. Not the beautiful game but we can't afford that can we?
RoyRover Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Alan Smith would be an awful signing. Was never good enough at Newcastle, wouldn't be good enough for us.
gazsimm Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Alan Smith would be an awful signing. Was never good enough at Newcastle, wouldn't be good enough for us. if it is true that Sam is trying to bring Smith to Ewood, then i won't be to upset. I think he is better in midfield then up front though and after all he can't be worse then the axe. Sam has always got the best out of his players were ever he has been and i reckon he will do the same with Smith.

LeChuck Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I sincerely doubt all this Smith talk. I'm sure Sam didn't even play him up front in his time at Newcastle, I'm sure he stuck him out on the right wing. He's only 5'10, and although he does put himself about a bit, I really can't see him being the sort of player Sam would want to build his attacks from. Plus Sam must be sick of players being injured already, it would be very odd of him to sign someone like Smith.
RovertheHill Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I believe Smith was looking for a big money move to the states 18 months ago which if true suggests he's given up. Wouldn't touch him with Coyle's barge pole
jim mk2 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Better than what we have but not one of my favourite players and certainly not at £2.5m.
benhben Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 That Giovanni Dos Santos looked like a wonderkid at Barca. Last game I saw him play for them he got a hat trick. Thought he was held in the same regard as Bojan. Moved to spurs and it never worked out. Heard he was on loan at ipswich last term. Might be worth a go if the fee is low, as hes still young.

I think the problem with Dos Santos is that he's a bit lightweight for the premership and gets pushed off the ball far to easy.
mellison24 Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 HUGHESY!!!!! (Or indeed, anybody with contacts in Ewood close to the board, manager, JW or the bleedin secretary!!) Get them to look at NURI SAHIN!! I swear that lad is the perfect replacement for Tugay!!! (And I don't mean just because he's turkish; that bit just adds a bit of gloss) Check his profile if you aren't sure, but he really impressed me playing for Borussia Dortmund 2 years ago when he was only 18. I think he still plays there now after a loan spell at Feyenoord last year. He's only 20, but an absolute gem. Reckon we could steal him for about 3-4million!
Hughesy Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Sorry Mellison - I contacted a guy the other day about the SA player that Iceman mentioned but they wouldnt allow me to pass any names on, they assured me they have a very thorough scouting network etc and therefore couldnt pass the info on.....Shame but thats not my choice!
nicko Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Wrong place for this...but mentioned it yesterday... Martinez clear to talk to Wigan. Fee agreed.
Gus Gus Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Wrong place for this...but mentioned it yesterday... Martinez clear to talk to Wigan. Fee agreed. It will be very interesting to compare how Martinez does to how Ince did... wasn't he in the frame for us last year?
Silencio Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 It will be very interesting to compare how Martinez does to how Ince did... wasn't he in the frame for us last year? Think he'll do better than Ince. Ince was thick as pigshit, unlike Martinez... Martinez knows the game well.
T4E Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Is there a good reason why Smith never seems to play up front any more? He used to be really good, I always thought his scoring record was down to a shift in position?
LeChuck Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 It will be very interesting to compare how Martinez does to how Ince did... wasn't he in the frame for us last year? Not really a fair comparison. Martinez had a great season in the Championship last year with a relatively small club. Ince had only ever managed in League Two. There's such a vast difference in level there that you can't even begin to compare the two. I have just thought as I was writing that, maybe you meant it in a 'look at what we could have won' kind of way. If you did then I agree entirely, I would have been very happy for Martinez to get the job at either point last year. I think he'll do very well at Wigan.
